Agree with everyone...
I think it's a great, under-appreciated protein... HIGHLY bio-available, very slow digestion. It's also great that because of it's slow digestion you won't get an insulin spike like you do with whey.
I actually use it WITH whey protein for my PWO drink. I do "half-and-half" for both. That way I get protein's immediately to the muscle but continue a "steady-state" there-after. Pre-bed: I don't want this thread to get skewed... I understand the principle behind it, but it concerns me for a couple reasons- 1) Certain "excitable" amino acids will cross the blood brain barrier. Although you may sleep, it won't be as deep as normal. 2) Fasting is actually healthy for the body- Dat is proponent of it. 3) Sleep is a time for the body to be focusing on healing and restoring instead of putting energy towards digestion. But, those are just thoughts |

I agree with the previous posters, casein is very good stuff. whey is better post workout but before going to sleep i have it on its own and the rest of the times i mix it with the short acting whey.

better than egg white protein? I've been drinking 100g of egg white protein during the night and never felt better! I get it in cartons for 3 bucks, pasteurized (so no worry about digestion/salmonella)...each carton has 100g protein from egg white. A little more pricey than protein from (for instance) beef or chicken...but there is no preparation and no cleanup (just toss the empty carton in recycling after you're done).

Are you saying that casein before bed would actually hinder sleep and recovery?

Good question....
Quote:
Sleep- it would not hinder it, you could still fall asleep. You may not just get as DEEP of sleep. When I say "excitable" AA's, I mean AA's that will increase certain neurotransmitters that increase the brain's alertness. Also, different AA's "compete" for absorption across the blood brain barrier (which is fine during the day) but at night you wouldn't want tryptophan (which converts to 5-HTP --> serotonin) to be blocked. It's the same idea with those who say they can drink coffee before bed and still fall asleep. That's true, but if you did an EEG study their brain is still "awake". Recovery- I hope I didn't allude to that your recovery would be hindered. For me personally, getting enough sleep is a battle d/t a lot of commitments. BUT- it's one of the most underrated elements in our arsenal towards fat loss, muscle building and, well, having a more "balanced" brain in it's neurotransmitters and ability to process. My emphasis was more on getting a full and complete sleep. The phrase(s) I usually use is that we want to "maximize our gains" or "get the most bang for the buck" in what we are doing. In sleep, I want my energy going towards repairing other parts of my body internally, hormonal systems are given a chance to "rest" (particularly the adrenals) and allow my brain to be "off" so it's fully ready for the next day, rather than drawing blood away from these processes to my GI system to aid in digestion. If I took casein before bed every night for the next several months, any gains I did get, probably wouldn't be physically noticeable. I don't think it would be worth the trade off (from just an overall health perspective) on how other systems may be affected. |
