So, if one has been responsible and saved up (only 26 years old) has cash, very little invested. Little debt that I'm planning to pay off. What would be the smart thing to do, buy gold. I have busted my ass to save money up to start a business which I am not going to do (due to the coming mess). I dont want to lose everything I have worked hard for. How does one go about buying gold, if that is in fact the smart thing to do? What do you guys suggest? Also, I have about 12,500 total debt (school loans) should i just pay them off immediately if I am able to do so? Thanks

Interestingly with spiraling inflation, the debt will be valueless and count as nothing, so no sense in paying it off.

For all those who live in America and are bitching about the economy...quit acting like such babies.

Try living in a 3rd world country where there is starvation, rampant diseases, terrorism, and civil war. One day your money is worth enough to put food on the table...the next day its worth nothing.

We have things so friggen easy in the US. The only thing you have to do is get out of your little box and adapt to the environment. I was an architect for 6 years. I made sensational money...but that all ended long before the rest of the country even heard the word "recession." My industry died in July of 2007. I have lived off my savings since then and instead of bitching and complaining I have started 3 new business to pay the bills. All these companies cost less than $5,000 to start and the rest was hard work and putting in the time to make it happen. I have recouped my investments and am making the cash I need to live my life.

So America is more expensive to live in now. Its not so easy for the lazy ass to make a living like it used to be. So what. Be thankful for what you have and get your heads out of your ass and go do something.

Im not trying to offend anyone, so please, I mean no disrespect. Anyone can make money and enough to live on. Its just a little harder these days to do so.

Try moving to Iraq and living there for a while then tell me how crappy the dollar really is.

I totally agree with what you said, except that you leave out the fact that our government keeps making it harder for people like you or me to succeed by putting obstacles in the way and charging higher taxes so that the lazy asses who do nothing at all live a better and better lifestyle year after year.

I could not have said it better. Glenn Beck hit a nerve this week with his theory of the dollar. He indicated that there is 120% more dollars in circulation than assets to back them up. This was similar to when Carter was president and 113% of dollars to assets was the case. Think about the insane inflation that occurred then. IMO - owning your home, land, precious metals, etc. are all sound investments in times like these. That is if your looking at the big picture and are going to hold on to them for some length of time. Chasing quick money is the same as gambling to me.

I feel your pain Ness, my business is tied heavily to construction in the lower SE US, it died about then also. Since i am an agri business and produce nursery stock, i'm pretty locked into staying in one business as my overhead is as skinny as i can get it. Went thru a divorce and w/ the economy, had to drastically slash my lifestyle, went from owning a 4500ft house to renting a townhouse, but that's ok, it's just stuff. I have no choice but to ride this recession out, and to be honest, i'm happier that ever, stuff is relatively meaningless. I went w my daughters to the Philippines a couple years ago, and it opened my eyes to what's important: relationships, stuff is a distraction.

It does piss me off what our elected crooks are doing, and i don't spare either Party. It's all about power struggles, the best interest of the people is not what they're fighting for. And i thought we had it bad w/ Bush the fiscal liberal, this current bunch makes W look like misers. I voted against every damn incumbent, and i will do it again, and i (respectfully) write my Congressmen and express my opinion. Like what you said Ness: Don't like it, do something abut it...

We'll be fine, the American people are not hip to the socialists trying to take this country over, they will get thrown out and another group of idiots shuffled in

There was a young single mother of two small children, down the road from where I live, being unemployed for so long, no husband and no means to feed her children walked into a local convenience store. With her finger in her coat pocket pretending she had a gun asked the clerk to hand over the cash they had on hand.
She was young, single, no support system to help her, no incoming child support. She needed money to repair her small junk car so she could just survive another few days (food stamps and unemployment only go so far)...she didn't have 5,000 to start up a small business.
She now has lost everything...was she lazy?...stupid? or just out of hope, out of options... she did what she thought she had to do, sure she had better options, but being young she was trying to make a way within the fog of desperation...much like the fog of war...we make bad decisions. Don't pity her and her now fostered children...say a prayer for them.

You Sir, set there at your computer and act like everyone who cant make it is just lazy...Let me tell you my man, your way out of touch with reality.

You made it...good for you but don't say those who cant are there because they are stupid or lazy.
Your a hypocrite of the highest order for not taking some of your good fortune and donating to those food banks or churches in your area, so others can just have enough to eat for one more day. If you do then again, good for you.

This country is great...yes, but what you and many others are about to see in the coming years will test us all.

What are the business' you started Curious... you made it sound easy. I have 5k, but there are many families that don't have $5 saved up, health insurance or a home for that matter let alone 5k.

Then she was dumb picking the wrong husband. Theres no reason its my responsibility, or the responsibility of the government to provide for her. Theres this little thing called responsibility, that people need to deal with. People's expectation of wages and jobs are outside the reality of their skill and knowledge level. Instead of watching pro sports, and american idol and whatever other horseshit they watch, if they put half that much time into bettering their skills and knowledge, they wouldn't have a hard time finding jobs.

I have no issues w/ helping out others down on their luck, what bothers me is the now generations of lazy folks who the gov't is more than happy to keep ignorant and poor, that guarantees them a block of votes. That's pissing away tax dollars in several different directions, but much worse, keeping folks 'down' for political gains There are jobs here, why do you think we have what, 14 million illegals here? Many US citizens are paid to well by the gov't not to work, and trust me, i've tried many many many times to work them...
