Waxing is no longer just for the girls. Waxing is perfect for removing chest, back and shoulder hair, as well as pubic hair – the male Brazilian!
If you’re new to the world of waxing and aren’t sure what to expect, here’s a step-by-step guide to waxing above and beneath the boxers.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?
Be clean and freshly showered. Your skin should also be free of any lotion (you'll get better results if your skin is less oily).
The hair you wish to remove should be at least 6-7 millimetres in length, making it long enough to lie flat on your skin. So don't shave for at least two weeks before your appointment, or your hair won’t be long enough. On the other end of the spectrum, if you've let things go a bit down there, you (or your therapist) can trim any longer hairs to the proper length before your wax.
If possible, wear loose clothing on the day of your appointment, to prevent irritation after your wax.
The main concern people have regarding waxing is – does it hurt? This can depend on a few things – how sensitive your skin is, and how strong your hair is.
After your wax, your therapist should apply a soothing lotion to minimise any problems with redness or in-grown hairs, however many salons don’t use quality products or offer home care advice so take your VitaMan After Shave Balm with you **broken link removed**
Ideally cleanse with an antibacterial wash before your treatment such as our Face & Body Cleanser **broken link removed** then always follow the waxing with an antibacterial balm (VitaMan’s After Shave Balm which is aloe vera based and has many calming and soothing ingredients which will heal the skin, reduce redness and speed up recovery).
The two biggest sources of hair-removal irritation are ingrown hairs and a pimple-like skin rash. The After Shave Balm will prevent this in most cases.
If, within hours, you notice a red rash on the waxed area, you probably didn’t exfoliate or cleanse properly prior to hair removal. As a result, dead skin cells and oils contaminated the delicate skin. Much like the pimples on your face, post-waxing pimples should NOT be tampered with. Popping them will only spread the bacteria. Those tiny red bumps that show up a few hours after waxing are actually folliculitis--an inflammation of the hair follicles. Most bumps that occur after waxing usually only last for about three days, requiring only minor treatment to relieve the discomfort and prevent infection.
Try to avoid touching the area. If you are in an environment that might make you sweat, choose cotton clothing. Keep up the antibacterial Face and Body Cleanser to shower with and apply (with clean hands) the After Shave Balm twice daily.
The skin rash may be gone, but a few days after waxing you may notice a new kind of red bump, which signals ingrown hairs that result when a hair breaks off just above or below the skin’s surface and then grows inward. Thick and curly hair is especially problematic because, by nature, it’s unruly.
The severity of ingrown hair depends on the individual. Some people may suffer from dozens of irritating bumps that can end up like a painful skin rash, while others may not even be aware of their ingrown hair.
In Summary - the best way to prepare skin for waxing is to:
Hair removal by waxing can be done at most spas, even nail salons. However, be aware that a cheap wax is not always a smart idea. Make sure that the establishment and the therapist perform the procedure in very sanitary conditions (if possible, ask for a new pot of wax to avoid double dipping into the community pot!).
Remember for best results come to your appointment prepared — cleansed and exfoliated and if possible your own Balm. Waxing after your kick-boxing class or a session at the gym is not a good idea!
We have also put together a February Power Pack of the month to prepare your body for waxing "Ultimate 6 Pack Essentials"...check it out here.

- Exfoliate regularly (between sessions) using VitaMan’s Face Scrub and or Sea Salt Body Scrub **broken link removed**
**broken link removed** - Before hair removal, take a warm shower to wash away excess oil and impurities that might clog pores. The steamy atmosphere will also help pores open up and minimize the likelihood of ingrown hair following waxing.
- Do not apply any lotion right before a wax; this may interfere with the effectiveness of the wax or cause a skin rash.
- Following hair removal, immediately apply our aloe vera After Shave Balm to hydrate and rejuvenate skin; it will also reduce redness and minimize a skin rash.
