Cant get online with new laptop..

Hi guys.. Got my gf a new HP laptop the other day and im having trouble getting her online. She had the wireless "card"( or whatever its called) built in. I have wireless internet at my house so im just trying to get her to be able to bite off that. When it asks for the password to use my wireless service we put it in and it works.. then another small screen pops up and says enter mismatch code.. or something like that?? what is this? I called best buy and geek squad man told me i need the password for my router? But he wouldnt tell me how to get the password... im lost.

I know how to use a computer.. but i dont know details like this.. can anyone help? Thanks for your time!

What make and model router? Is it set to the default wireless router password or did you configure it? Is it the old WEP, or newer WPA or WPA2 encryption if you did set it manually?

you might as well be speaking spanish..lol

we put a password on the wireless so neighbors ect couldnt use it.. the router says netgear on it

Reset your router with the little recessed button on the back.
from the main pc that is hooked to the router access it with 191.168.1.1
If I remember the user/pass is admin you may not have to put in the pass
just user admin

Wrong Username and password and IP for Netgear as you just stated the access and IP for Linksys. Netgear is usually 192.168.0.1, and the default admin username is 'admin' and the password is 'password' or '1234' on older models. It will show on the web page once you go to that IP. It will walk him through a lamens wizard of which he can reset everything.

Thanks for your time so far... Here is the setup-- i have a PC.. my room mate installed the wireless in my room and it gives them internet on their pc.. when i search for a network on my gf's laptop i see their service.. they named it "hardcore" i click on it, and it askes for a password.. i enter their password and click ok... it then says logging into hardcore.. then another small pop-up says enter mismatch key thats where i get lost.. whats a mis-match key?

Then whoever you are trying to leech from has changed their password or SSID

Hmm... i asked them and they said they never changed anything... thanks for your time kiaser.. maybe ill just pay someone to come over and look at it.. i can fix just about anything... BUT COMPUTERS!!!!!

Take a screen shot of the mismatch key error with the WiFi association. Google it if you don't know how.
There is just 1 router and no other devices acting like faux access points right?

If you were able to log into the management page to put a password on it, then you can change the network password, encryption, etc..

Disable encryption, then try to associate.

You say it's a new laptop so I assume it's vista os.

friend each and every system requires the same wap key to be correctly match the router.

go to the routers setup get the wap key copy and paste it on the system wireless loging screen. you should be good to go.

let me know if you still can't log in.
