Crippling Shin pump while running, yes singular shin

I can run for about a half mile and my left shin starts to explode. It is so pumped in the front that I have to stop and take all the weight off of it to let the muscle relax. Why is it only ONE leg and not both? My right leg is perfectly fine:confused::confused:

I'm pretty sure it is caused by LR3 as I have been running 40mcgs (10mcg in each calf head). And it started right after I started the LR3. Also in my 4th wk of 400mg/wk primo, 150mg/wk Test, 25mg/ed prov, 75mg/wk NPP (joints). I think I am going to drop the NPP and LR3 and see what happens. Any ideas in the mean time? I have a triathlon in 7wks!

With you saying its only on the left, I would say it is more due to some muscular imbalance you have going on. Try rolling out both your calves, soleus, and tibialis anterior on a PVC pipe or hard foam roller. I bet doing this for 10 minutes prior to running will mitigate most of your issues.

I tried playing basketball in a church league and the exact same thing happened to me everygame.

I get them really bad also. for me, it was both but your issue with just 1 could well be a imbalance issue. I try to drink at least 32oz water before starting along with coffee (I do cardio am fasted) and drink another 16oz while doing the cardio. solves my issue with it.

Thanks for the replies. Its so weird. I have been getting hard calf massages by a lady friend as well....no luck.:(

Welcome to trying to run as a bodybuilder. I make it about 2-3 miles before my calves lock up, and the last mile is pure pain, mostly in the tibialis anterior. It has a taken a lot of consistent work to get to 2-3 miles.

NEVER run on hard surfaces, ever, only trails/tracks, and it won't be quite as bad. Hard surfaces will also destroy your knees unless you are extremely light and run with perfect mechanics (pretty much no one).

I have seen similar situations in physical therapy many times before. More often than not the patients are favoring one leg over the other while they run.

Video tape your gait walking, running/jogging, and sprinting. Find a specialist or someone with a keen eye for this sort of thing to analyze it for you.

Most people exhale on the same footfall each time (eg they always exhale on the right foot striking), this makes everyone lopsided. Easy to correct by exhaling on opposite footfalls.

Sounds like shin splints to me. Shin splints can be on one side or both. Sometimes they flare up and sometimes they don't. I have the EXACT same problem. SOme days i can walk a couple miles and some days i can't. Jogging is hit or miss as well. Its crippling painful and i am 99% sure its shin splints (Feels like the facia is tearing).

This has helped me quite a bit and i don't get many flare ups any longer. Stretching doesn't help so don't go down that route. You have to build up the tibialis anterior (Im pretty sure thats the muscle). To do this start by doing 2 things:

1- progressive walking or running. if you know they start to flare up at 1 mile of walking or running, make sure you are done with your walk/run at 1 mile. Each week (Or day if you are progressing) increase the distance just a little bit. If after 1 mile you are still ok, walk another 100 yards. Then each day increase your distance.

2-(This one helped me the most). Walk around on your heals with your toes off the ground. you won't be able to bend your ankles or knees when doing this and you will feel like a retard when doing them but they are very effective. Walk around your house, yard, block, gym, wherever, and only walk on your heels. Your tibialis anterior will burn like a bitch. A couple of sets of this each day will build them up very fast.

Some people don't engage their TA and when they are used, they get fatigued very easy and start to feel like they are tearing (Also caused by calves being over powering). You need to keep your TA built up and progressive walking and heal walks are the best way.

I almost forgot. Another good exercise is using resistance against the top of your foot while pulling your foot up. I have used dumbbells in the gym for this and its another great way to strengthen your TA.

Hope this helps. It worked miracles for me.

Shin splints...or could be from running on toes....could be your shoes. There are a variety of things it could be that are contributing to or causing the problem.

Man this is the exact thing that happened to my youngest playing football last year.
All the answers could be the problem but take the advice above .On another note my kid was 13 and now at 14 he i am afraid heading toward a painful life.

Yeah have him strengthen his tibialis anterior by heal walks and toe raises (Not raises where he stands up on his toes but where there is resistance on his toes, keeps his heal on the floor and tries to raise the weight up with his toes.

Heal walks look dumb but are great.

Im not sure why the Tibialis anterior gets so fatigued in some people, like me, but it does and thats basically what causes the shin splint symptoms. I was told it was because the calf muscle its too strong and talks over and the TA never does much work until you run or over exert it.

I have the same issue. And for me it is also only the left leg. I know it's cramps and not shin splints because I had splints before. Mine always does it at 10:00 mins on the dot of running the tightens up like a Charlie horse. If I stretch it the problem goes away for a few minutes. People tell me to try proviron to fix it

Sent from my phone using Test

Same here! I have had shin splints it's not that. Just gets so full of blood the front of my leg feels like it's gonna pop.

I know the difference as well but the symptoms are the same. Mine felt like they were balloons getting ready to pop. Its caused by the same thing and i fixed mine the same way as shin splints.

Great, thx for the input. I am confused as to why this would work. Why would I want to build up the muscle that is cramping? It is obviously getting to much blood, so then I force MORE blood into it? Building muscle increases blood flow. Correct me if I am not seeing clearly here...

Cramping has nothing to do with getting too much blood flow. Nothing at all.

It doesn't feel like a cramp, it feels like back pumps but in my shin. GOOD NEWS THOUGH! I went 6.5mi today w/out rest. I dropped the calf LR3 injects and boom....almost overnight it was fixed. Crazy huh? Felt great and could have gone longer.
