Ever try decompression for a bulging disk that’s impinging your sciatic nerve?

For the past 2 months I’ve been dealing with a bulging disk in my L4/L5 region that is pressing against my sciatic nerve. It has caused the worst pain in my life down the side of my leg, the knee, and tingling down the lower leg. My left side lower back always hurts but the leg pain is so bad i didn’t get out of bed for 3 weeks without mad pain killers. Walking 10 feet to the bathroom had me screaming in pain.
Anyway, a few guys at the gym recommended decompression as a means to lengthen the spinal area which allows blood and nutrients to flow to the affected disk. Increased space should gradually allow the bulging disk to shrink and fall back into the correct spinal position.

Have any of you guys had bad sciatica?

How did you deal with it?

What worked?

What was a waste of time?

I just ordered this decompression device off amazon.
My friend at the gym tried every medical option available from various injections, chiropractor, acupuncture, a doctor with an electric decompression machine which he said didn’t pull hard enough on the spine.
He told me to buy this off amazon. It changed his life from unbearable chronic lower back pain to feeling good again.
Mine arrives this week. Has anyone here tried this?

JJ I have a teeter hangups that helps, the thing that helped the most. I met a specialist by the name of Pete Ecosque he wrote book called "painfree" paper back is $12 hell might even be an on line version now. Best thing I ever did was read it. Look it up.

I had it bad bro... same thing as you..buldging discs on nerve

the sciatica was insane...couldn't get in or drive car.. stuck at home.. was the worst

used strong painkillers to eleveate pain..etc

tried certain stretches etc

eventually had to have surgery

woke up from surgery sciatica completely gone...

took about 3 or 4 weeks to recover from surgery

been fine ever since.

Not suggesting surgery... try everything first.

I just had no choice in the end. was getting drop foot..

JJ, I'm very familiar with traction devices. I have worked in the spine field for 13 years and started my career working large computerized traction device for about 3-4 years. I have seen some before and after MRI, and I might have a comparison picture on my phone, that prove traction can remove herniations.

The device you have bought is not bad. An inversion table like a "Teeter" might be a step up. But the device you bought is still worthy. Think of the traction like exercise. Going light you can do it daily or several times a day. If you really pull on yourself, like a harder workout, you will get more sore and need more recuperation. Use ice after every traction session on your low back for 20 minutes if your leg is flared. And let the nerve down the leg calm down if you aggravate it with the traction. I would pretty much ice your back 20 on several times a day anyway if you got bad leg pain.

I am also well versed with procedures if you have questions on them too. Its common to have epidural injections in you have the leg pain from an irritated nerve. Ibuprofen 800mg 3x/day is something you can take at home as well if you are able to take ibuprofen.

I 2nd the Pete Egoscue book. Good info in there and helps to break down some of the ideas of how to stay mobile and healthy. Also has some good info if you are in the hurt locker.

Thank you for the recommendation. I’ll check it out. 😀

That’s great that the surgery worked. I hope it doesn’t come to that for me. If my foot started dropping I’d be scared shitless! A few weeks ago the pain was so bad i wouldn’t have been able to live like that for long. It’s gotten much better since then.

I try to avoid NSAIDS. My liver works hard enough with the anadrol I’m on. Haha 😆
This experience led me to vaping THC/CBD which i now see as real good for health and reduction in inflammation. I never was into weed. I believed all the stereotypes of laziness, slower mental capacity, the “munchies”, etc. It’s all a lie. I actually am faster mentally and have more energy, and i don’t get food cravings. I notice it seems to reduce the inflammation in my bad elbow and wrist. Haha I’m turning into a hippie. Yesterday, i found myself listening to the Doobie Brothers and Grace Slick. Hahahaha 🤣

I've herniated the same disc twice, and both times was able to resolve it with rehab exercises from a pamphlet my doctor gave me.

Best advice is don't let it go too long before treatment. I let it go 6 - 12 months the first time, and I don't know if it caused nerve issues or what, but my left leg has been noticeably smaller than my right since. The strength is almost the same as my right, but mass-wise it will never reach my right.

Think one of these might help?

I use that at least 5x a week and also go to the chiropractor and he has a decompression table there. The decompression tables at the chiropractors' offices are much better than anything you can have at home. I recommend you see a chiropractor and see if he thinks it might help you. I think it would.

The machine is basically a motor that pulls your pelvis down the table, you lie on it horizontally like a bed. It pulls down and helps separate your lumbar vertebrae. Similar to a teeter table you use at home by hanging upside down only the force is all concentrated in your low back instead of your entire spine, and its a lot stronger. I lie there for about 15 minutes, and doing the teeter hangup at home you really aren't supposed to do it much more than 5 minutes at a time because all of the blood rushes to your head. They say it could cause damage to the retina because of the increased BP in your head.

The decompression works while hiit on it and a short time later.. a cheap tens unit off Amazon is way better but believe me u used the decomp all the time I never wanted to leave it.. but the tens would kill ot for a while and if it didn't I left it on clipped it to my belt and put a belly band around my waist to keep it in place.. cortisone shots worked for a few months at a time but were a bitch getting... most dr don't even want to go in until there is weakness.. my calf and my glutes on my right side stared to get weak and I ignored it. Well before I knew it I had no muscle left. So if you start to have any weakness at all go have the surgery that same week because that only gets worse...

Feel better, hope this helps!

My chiropractor used TENS on me for a few weeks with some nice units and it helped me some, but once he put me on the decompression table it was a huge difference. For me the TENS didn't do much at all. Im not sure why he started with that and then moved to the decompression. I think it might be because the TENS is more gentle and he was worried going right into decompression might be too much. I was starting to get numbness in my left foot. That is all gone now.

He doesn't use TENS on me at all now since the decompression works so much better for me.

the tens is for the long haul. It zaps the nerve so much for me the nerve became less painful over time. It like deadened it. Plus i could have it on all day every day.. not that I did but have it on for long stretches.. also topical capsaicin helps for the long haul. It burns the nerve so much over time it is just a tougher so it hurts less...
