Hey guys. I'm fairly new to the PM board. I've been lifting for 4 years now. Started powerlifting 2 years into it at age 16. 345 240 405 at 148(raw obviously). Then I got into strongman which is what I'm training for right now. I thought I could keep a log on here and get some advice from you guys. I feel confused about my training sometimes. It's like if I train for a competition specifically for 3 months and then go back to the main lifts, I have to start all over. This just happened with my deadlift. I dont even think i can get 405 anymore :(. Though, some of my other lifts have gotten better like the log press. I'm just now getting the hang of it and am watching it go up steadily every week. I'll be posting my workout from yesterday shortly.

hey man, i think im gonna pay close attn to this thread seeing as how im really trying to get into this but have no idea where to start.
for the past 10 years ive been strictly body building and have recently been thinking that i really havent seen a strong man that couldnt just drop some bodyfat and win a b.b. competition i want to get into this just for the sheer size and strength. i hope you dont mind if i pick your brain on this.

*Today pretty much sucked. As soon as I got outside to start on event 1 with my brand new log, it started raining. I packed my shit up, put it in the truck, and headed for my grandpas. (the ceiling in his house is high enough for me to press) So instead of having event day today, I worked on the log and tricep strength. Here's how it went

nice work man. ive been modifying my training alittle, how does this look?
shoulder press is now standing shouolder presses taking the weight up from the floor.
took your advice and started putting a block under the bar for dead lifts. im weak at the bottom.

added dumbell clean and presses, a power lifter at the gym said it would help with overall strength and explosivity.

i look pretty dumb doing it but walking with that diamond shaped bar with 405 on it, i read about that on another site, i also use it for shrugs.(farmers walk).

every thursday i unload the kegs from the beer guy, by carring them from the loading dock to the walk in(he thinks im nuts) using various grips.

same with all the beer in cases(3 cases at a time)

took and empty keg and started practicing the keg toss, im not sure what it weighs but its at least 35 lbs. after 10-12 times it really starts to burn like hell.

im trying to be creative and use what i have access too...any advice?
 
looks pretty good man. IMO now (got this advice from my state chairman for strongman) You always should be practicing with the log,farmers,,sled,deadlift, and stones.Those are your CORE events. Those should be the lifts you ALWAYS keep in your routine along with the basic squat and OH presses. When you sign up for a competition, add the other events that arent part of your core events. The trap bar can work for farmers but its nothing like the real thing, especially when turning with them. I'm not made of money either, so I made mine. It was pretty simple. Do a search on how to make them on google. I made mine for around 30$.

Dumbell clean and press probably does help a bit with overall explosiveness, but it really has no carryover at all to the log press, and little carryover to the barbell and axle press. You should try doing just clean and presses with the barbell. Thats what I did up until I saved money for a log, and because of it, I'm always pretty good at the axle clean and press events (still suck on the log though haha)

My competition was today. "central state strongman challenge" in taylorville IL. I was in the 231 pound weight class and weighed in at a whopping 158 lol.

here were the events

deadlift 445 for reps
keg load onto a big dump truck 100,150,175,190,210
farmers carry for distance 225 per hand
flip 500 pound tire 4 times,drag 450 sled 80 ft


logmax-my worst event
opened at 150
hit 170 next
missed 185 at lockout

deadlift-
i got 2 reps, which is a pr so I'm very happy

keg load-
i got 4 kegs, the last one kicked my butt

farmers carry 225-
i got 62.5 feet. this surprised the hell out of me cause I only got around 20ft in training

tire/sled-
got it done in 60 seconds


all in all i came out with 6th place. I'm pretty happy considering im apretty light guy competing in the big league. fun times.
