or do any of you guys already use one? ive been noticing as I have been pushing myself more over the years I have sometimes been biting down really hard at times. I mean I think as long as your not getting hit in the jaw all should be good huh?
 
Back in the day when I was lifting the big weights I actually broke a tooth from gritting my teeth I had to have it removed.
If you are the type of person that cleanches their jaw while lifting yes you should use a mouthpiece.
 
I was just getting ready to say no. But then capin posts that hardcore story so I digress....:eek:
 
Im sure it depends on if you grind your teeth. Most people would probably say no.
 
I occasionally train with one and it's kinda nice. When you are gritting your teeth, it gives you something to bite down on. Helps you concentrate on what you are trying to accomplish a bit better.

Necessary IMO if lifting very heavy

I chew gum to keep from unconsciously clenching my jaw while lifting.
 
I only use one if i try a near maximum lift.
My dentist made mine ......
several years ago my dentist told me i should wear one when lifting but i never did. it cant hurt.
 
years ago i saw a study showing people could lift heavier while using a mouth guard.
 
Too distracting for me. Not just putting it in and taking it out but also interferes just enough with my breathing to be distracting. Usually by my last rep, often I'm a drooling slobbering mess lol.

I can completely see why some guys would like em though.

I cracked a tooth on heavy deadlifts, and I noticed on heavy full body movements that I clenched teeth hard. I started using one about 2 years ago. I like it.

Never felt the need to use one, but if I were a power lifter I would considerate it.
 
I get a pump in my jaw muscle if I chew gum. Sucks. A mouth piece works well on a heavy back day or as posted above any time a max weight comes around.

Underarmour makes one that doesn't interfere with breathing.
