30 years of gear use-I'm starting to regret

Snowing out and decided to share in hopes of helping someone like you all have helped me over the years. I am 49 yo, Ive been bodybuilding since 14, gear use since 19, competed for 9 years (87-96) as what would be now a super heavy. I was always the strongest and biggest guy in the gym. Anyway, healthy and mostly injury free until about 10 years ago. I fell and tore my quad, tore my tricep, rotator cuff surgery, broken ankle, hernia, hummm probably missed a couple too. Recently, the past few years suffering from herniated discs, until November I had a major flare up with sciatica and weakness in my quad torn leg. Told I have spinal stenosis with scoliosis and herniated discs, need double fusion surgery along with a laminectomy. I decided to hold off for now as my leg weakness in making me fall and unless I get this fixed, I will not be able to rehab from the back surgery if I am falling down all the time. Ive been feeling unhealthy, went for blood work and my levels are all messed up. I am leaking protein (3+) cholesterol is 320, HDL is 25, LDL is 232, BUN is 28, my AST and ALT has come down but still high at 69 and 78. I am on a low dose of BP meds so my pressure is mostly under control. I went to a renal/hypertension doc 4 years ago and was told I was leaking protein then, had a untrasound and told I should also have a biopsy (which I didn't do) as I was told because of my size they would have to cut my back to get the biopsy. I was also told 3 years ago (when I was trying to get approved for shoulder surgery) that I have a leaky heart valve. I admit, I have been very lax with follow up on my issues (not good) but I am feeling really old now and feel my gear use is coming to an end. I've only been off totally for about 10 weeks prior to this test but I am not too optimistic these numbers are just from the temporary raising of your levels from gear use. I need to follow up with my doc so I can get yelled at, make an appointment with a heart specialist for a long overdue followup and probably be put on cholesterol meds, and also go to the renal doctor for follow up.
I am certainly not trying to preach to anyone, I know I wouldn't have paid attention either when I was in my 20s, I was indestructable.
I loved lifting the heavy weights, clanging of the weights, bending the bar with the weights. I miss it and do not regret it but I know my body is worn down now from the years of that. I just told my wife after going out to shovel some of this snow from the blizzard, that I am nervous of the high cholesterol numbers that if she sees me on the ground to call the paramedics!
Thanks for letting me share

I'm very sorry to hear about your story. I'm glad you are finally going to get those follow ups. Don't lose hope yet. There are still so many ways to stay as healthy as possible to live a long life and maybe even reverse some damage.

Thanks for sharing upeccmi, this isn't a longevity sport so it's good that younger folks hear your warnings.

It's a wild ride, but if you want to live until you're old and grey the lifestyle probably isn't for you. Of course some people have great genetics, like smokers that can smoke for 40 years and not have any issues. Myself though, not in the no issues group.

Everyone needs to get their priorities straight for them, and decide how important their health and logevity is. A lot of good brothers have passed here well before their time.

Stay safe guys.

Thank you for sharing your story.

Best of luck going forward.

Just take one step at a time.

It will workout fine.

how much do you weigh right now?

im sure if you dropped down to say...180lbs or so, and did 30-45 minutes of cardio/day and used nothing more than trt doses with a clean diet, your health indicators would bounce back tremendously.

Can you give us some info about your steroid usage ? cycles ? duration ?

were you one of those 2 grams of Tren for a year type of guy ? Or 500mg of Test 2 - 3 times a year. Alcohol and drugs involved ?

That sucks dude.
But how heavy are you now? Did you down size accordingly for your age or have you still pushed your BMI over 35 or whatever?
The higher BUN and liver values is normal for hard training but the protein leaking obviously not.

TRT my friend! I'm sure you'll feel a lot better and still look pretty darn good! Work with the docs and get everything in order...one thing at a time...trust me, you've got some work to do but you'll get those numbers in order!

Thanks for sharing your story. It's never too late to get things under control and fix your health problems. A lot of the issues you are mentioning can very likely get fixed with a good nutrition, cardio, good exercise and no AAS. As far as the leaky heart valve, what valve is it? Was it caused by the use of AAS? What did the cardiologist tell you then? I'd follow up on that as well as going to the other specialists.

Hang in there and get on this.

Thanks guys!
I am now about 230 or so, pretty lean. I work out daily, I know I need to start the cardio again, after the back issue I haven't done much on that so far. Gear use has always been on the conservative side, never the 2+ gram guy even at contest time. I do have a habit of staying on wayyyyy too long with the lower doses though, one giant long cycle until I hurt myself, then I take time off. I think the last real time off was three years ago when I had my rotator cuff surgery. I eat pretty healthy, still the bodybuilder, I do cheat more though.
I just hate hearing the doctors crap when I go. They always seem like they are judging you. I know this is why I stopped going to my last renal doc, then I just buried my head in the sand hoping my issue would just go away my protein leakage went fro 2+ to 3+. No more denying.
My heart issue three years ago, they weren't too concerned then, told me to get the leaky valve checked in 6 months to see if it gets worse. Of course I didn't.

Brother, like Nothuman said, we have so much more knowledge today than we id just 20 years ago. Not only can you stop further damage from occurring, but you can even reverse a good deal of it and hopefully live a long life.

Personally, I would avoid cholesterol meds and try natural options first. There are SO many OTC alternatives out there that not only work (in some cases as well as statins) for improving cholesterol, but they lack the negative side effects of statins, while also supplying numerous additional health benefits. If it is your cardiovascular system you are concerned with (which you should be), start taking steps to protect yourself now. If you have the money and love your wife (and the rest of your family), you will do so. There are too many stories of former bodybuilders dying in their 40's and 50's for you to not do something.

Here is a good place to start:

Citrus bergamot (brand: Jarrow) @ 500-1,000 mg/day (1-2 caps/day)
Super Bio-curcumin (brand: Life Extension) @ 400-800 mg/day (1-2 caps/day)
Pomegranate fruit extract (brand: Jarrow) @ 425 mg/day (1 cap/day)
Super K with Advanced K2 Complex (brand: Life Extension) @ 1 cap/day
Ubiquinol (brand: Jarrow) @ 100-200 mg/day (1- caps/day)
Super Omega 3 (brand: Life Extension) @ 2-4 capsules/day

* If finances are not a concern, take the higher recommended dose

These products will help combat and even reverse cardiovascular damage through multiple pathways. While there are other great supplements out there, I consider these to be among the best for general use. While some of the products here help to reduce blood pressure, if it is still elevated, you need to get that under control A.S.A.P. Hawthorn berry is a great, inexpensive option for reducing BP. Take 500-1,000 mg/day in 2-3 equally divided doses.

I take all of these every single day, as do my wife and children. I take other supplements as well, but these are always in the picture.

not too concerned about the valve regurg at the moment but your renal issues and cardiovascular stuff concerns me.

if you need to talk to someone about medical stuff either PM me here or i check my messages on WCBB more often.

you need to take action if you want to live a long healthy life.

oh and if your location next to your post count is up to date then i can recommend a bunch of good people to see in north jersey and ny.

Gotgame,

I enjoy reading your posts and all the solid advice you give, especially when it comes down to health.

What's your field of expertise when it comes to health?

Was it worth it? Would you do it again ?

Google. What more do you need ;-)

It sounds like most of this all started to happen after you fell?
How did you fall and tear your self up like that?

Why would you ignore your docs?

So many guys here don't get check ups. I hope your story makes someone go to the doc.

What age did you realize this is killing you?

Posts like this need to be made to give the young guys perspective. When we are young we think we are invincible. I've done it myself and wonder what prices I'll pay when older. The post is appreciated.

That said, you need expert help and guidance like gotgame urged. But I'm not sure I'd come totally off and let your E2 go way up and your test low. That condition can be as bad as too much test for overall vascular/heart health. Not to mention quality of life goes in the shitter. Go to a conservative, legit HRT doc or Focus on your own "health oriented" TRT protocol (like 125-150mg/wk) and make sure your E2 is in range. No AI is ideal for lipid profile, so avoid if you can. But if you need something to stay in range, use exemestane. IMO, Most detrimental effects of prescribed TRT protocol are more related to the incorrect overuse of Arimidex or other AI by physicians than the test alone. Many are way over prescribing it for the test dose their patients are on.

Be sure to give a link to where you're selling all that stuff.

Maybe I'm taking your tone wrong, but if you're implying he's promoting his own sales, it's uncalled for. He doesn't sell supplements. Those are other companies brands. You clearly aren't familiar with him or the info. If you were a regular here you'd know better. Those recommendations are exactly what I'd tell him, right down to the LEF brand (save the pomegranate, I just drink the juice extract). They're echoed by many informed members here. He's not pushing product.
