I have a Valentine 1 with the latest updates but this thing goes off so much with false alarms here in south florida that its practically useless and I think I will remove it from my car. Also it doesn't go off with law enforcement sitting on the side of the road with a laser gun. Just 3 days ago I downloaded the free Waze app and I'm amazed at how much better this thing is compared to my Valentine 1. Granted you will get busted if there is a cop that no one has reported but so far its been extremely accurate. If you had to choose one over the other which one is better? A top of the line detector or Waze?

I use TomTom with Speed Camera warning system, not even illegal. Radar and Laser detectors are either too slow or full of bugs too much distortion all around us these days cant blame them either.

Waze on busy interstates is the shit. Almost every cop in sight gets reported by numerous users. It has saved my ass numerous times.

Waze is great, and not just for knowing when cops are coming up...it routes you around traffic, lets you know when road hazards are coming up (debris on road, foggy conditions, cars on the shoulder), and just in general makes your driving life a hell of a lot easier. I've been using it for a good 3-4 years now, and never plan to use another map system.

Really? How about a little math today.
Car A drives for 4 hours on interstate at 80 mph - covers 320 miles.
Car B drives for 4 hours at 65 mph - covers 260 miles.
You don't think a 60 mile difference is significant?
Car B must drive 5 hours to cover same distance as Car A did in 4 hours.

How About the fact that most speed taps are set up on road with unusually low speed limits. There's one buy my old house, 3 lanes wide 35mph speed limit. Most people Aren't intentionally speeding just going with the flow of traffic.

For me its real simple, I want to be in control of whats going on around me, so if something unexpected happens I am prepared. Unfortunately, on the freeway and main roads, you have pockets of traffic that are going around the speed limit; with everybody side by side, bumper to bumper and going the same speed. If you are in that pocket, its like you are trapped. All it takes is one person to cut somebody off or slow down, and the entire chain has to react quickly. And when you are trapped like that, you don't have a lot of options or control of what you can do. So, I would rather use the left lane and go around the pocket and not be surrounded by a bunch of idiots who are usually talking on their cell phone, texting, or just not paying attention. Its the guys that are going slow, not paying attention, and bunching up traffic that are causing the accidents; not the speeders who are going around.

Escort Radar

Ive been using escort in all of my cars now since 1986 and it has saved me from countless tickets. Both my Audi and my Porsche have them installed.

My Porsche has the 9500 CI which is installed permanently into the car. It is nice too because you cant see it from the outside so you don't worry about guys busting out your window to steal it and you don't have to worry about hiding it. It has a laser jammer on it too. The new laser jammer works well. The old one I have in my Audi and some of the newer lasers punch right through it but you still get warning. What it does is send out a laser beam from my car that confuses their gun and I think what they get is a readout of 00 mph. There is a button you then hit once you have slowed down to the speedlimit and the jammer is shut off so that the cop get his speed reading then.

That is what I have in my Audi, but the laser jammer is an old model and outdated now.

The new laser jammers have already saved me from about 2 tickets. The hardware pays for itself in a few years with saving from tickets and raised insurance rates. The raise in insurance is what really get you since it lasts like 3 years and you get burned on each bill you pay.

That is how I feel too. Sometimes I get drivers that want to drift behind my car when I am speeding and use me as a rabbit so that ill get the ticket and they just keep on driving. I don't like when cars follow me like that so I just punch it and get the hell outta there.

Regarding that app, I think I read awhile ago that some states are trying to outlaw it somehow.

Escort has a similar program that runs with their radar detector and your phone. Some use that in conjunction with the detector for the greatest protection. I don't mess with it.

Some old guys on here with S550's with Partronic (not so bad) and Distronic with Lane Assist and Alert Assist set off Ka band radar detectors in the USA all around there cars. Like a "protective bubble". No wonder the Distronic works so well, no one wants to drive around such a car. Wondered what was up for a long time. BTW they changed it around 2009 or so when they hid the sensors from view.

Me? No more detectors or "jammers". Waze all the way. I drive very little every day, but a lot by the end of the year. I take some 1500mile or 2k trips.

My top:

1. CB radio with hardwired 200 watt linear amp with power mic and shitty, splattering, mag mount with non swr matched attenna stuck on a nice car.

I used to drive 100 miles starting at 5:00 AM to be with my dad while my mom went to work. She got home and I repeated the trip. 5 days a week for a year or so. I had Valentine, best of the time. Eventually, K40 eternal jammer. Nothing worked like a freakin import galaxy mobile cb. I put in the linear amplifier and power mike to entertain myself. Luckily German cars came, even then, with good trip meters. My record was averaging over 90 for the Freeway portion. I admit this was wrong. I was young, and I thought I was doing a great thing, I was trained in high speed driving, and in a prepared car with prepared brakes, tires, etc.

I now realize, I did not prepare or properly regard nimrods. To them I apologize and realize my risk. I did make some friends among the truckers who also had a regular early morning route. Great guys, more than you think trained.

What I use. Escort uses those jammers. They coordinate with the radar detector. Many cops still use radar too. Laser is really common though.

Yeah, it is illegal to do anything that interferes with radar transmissions.

I swear by Waze. Always reporting police positions. They always like to set up at the bottom of a hill where you drift a little faster cause of gravity. I dont speed but i dont want a ticket for 5-10mph over the limit cause the quota is due. F the Police!

I do a combo of this: Escort passport max2, which is connected to my phone via bluetooth, and I use the escort live app along with this. This helps minimize false alerts, and lets me know about possible speed traps and user reported police. I believe this syncs up with Waze reports as well. In addition to this, I also use Waze just to be safe, and to know about upcoming traffic conditions. When I was purchasing my radar detector I was debating on the valentine, max 2, and redline. I decided to go with the max 2 due to the lack of false alerts. The valentine is great, but a bit outdated and has lots of false alerts. Because of this it makes it hard to trust, and if you don't trust your detector its kind of useless. The max 360 has recently come out, and since it added the directional arrows, it seems to be the best option right now.
