I get it really really bad. Its not a concern b/c it only occurs when I eat spicy food(which I love) or heavily seasoned foods. Anyway, I have been taking generic prilosec and it works great. My main ? is, is there any harm to taking heartburn meds forever? Are they hard on liver? Any problems?

I would try to find out the reason for the heartburn. Have you always had it or is it something that's just cropped up recently? Are you sure it's heartburn? I'm not sure about the prilosec for long periods of time, that's like taking pain killers without treating the reason for the pain IMO. But it couldn't hurt to see your doc and ask some questions.

NO point in seeing dr. now. They're just gonna run bloodtests and im on a cycle soon so it would just F up everything. I've had heartburn for a good 8+ years, but the reason why it doesnt concern me is b/c its only from certian spicy foods. If I eat just plain chicken/steak/fish/rice/oats,etc...I won't get it at all. So, that was my main ?. I don't want to take an otc heartburn med that could cause problems down the road. Like taking advil everyday will F up your liver eventually, but isnt heartburn meds pretty safe? Don't they not effect the liver at all?

Well if your just looking for a temp fix for some spicy foods
you eat try the most natural fix there is. Teaspoon baking
soda mixed in a half cup of water. Instant relief.

LOTS OF WATER

Man. That helps my heartburn more than anything. Drinking lots of water all day long. When I do that, I no longer need the prilosec.

The baking soda works well. It will not cause any long term probs. You need to buffer the acid building up in your stomach and baking soda will help do this. As LM said also drinking more than the usual amount of water will help dilute the stomach acids. Man I'm so lucky I don't get this cause I love spicy food. If you know your gonna have a spicy meal ahead of time then take the baking soda just before to create the buffer before it's needed. 8yrs huh, that sucks. Good luck.

Taking any meds over long period of time wouldnt be a good idea. You can get hearburn/acid reflux from: spicy foods, certain teas, tomato sause, alcohol, and some juices like mango juice (maybe it's something they put into the juice that causes it). Try and avoid these :) it's a bitch.

What is the problem. I can see how pain meds will effect liver, but what will heartburn meds do?

Are you listening to anything we're saying.
What's the problem, problem is you can't handle spicy foods. Simple
avoid them, Now #2 if you want to know what heartburn meds do
then do what oldfella said, see the doc.

No, they are not doing any damage to your liver, but my advice is to cut completly the spicy foods, because the problem will continue. I have the same issue, I realy had to cut off completely the condiment, and since I have not a problem whatsoever. Drinking hips of water also helps me a lot.

No no, I know what your saying. I basically just wanted to know what long term effects otc heartburn meds can have. Im presuming the only effect anything oral otc can have would be liver harm, so I just really wanted to know if otc heartburn meds are hard on the liver or anything else. I didnt know a dr. had to anwser that.

I know that the acid inhiitors could cause side affects. Never heard
of them screwing up your liver cause most are only takin for a period
of 20 days and thats it. I think Zantac is one. Watch out for the
anti acids that contain calcium carbonate like tums. Too much calcium
can screw up your kidneys and be vary dangerous if abused. My opinion
is again for temp fix try the baking soda deal. for long term try the Zantac.

Try to pick up more intakes of Yogurt, cottage cheese, and such. These items help a good bit with indigestion and heart burn. Also adding some Bromelain and papaya to your diet helps tremendously. I would not suggest Prilosec for the occasional heat burn. Especially since your not having heartburn issues everyday. It seems it's more on the spicey food days. Prilosec is for more serious esophageal issues. For the occassional heartburn go with Pepto Bismal. It's great for heartburn! And you can use it just after your spicey food days.

Hey bro....I used to get heartburn really bad, anytime I ate toamto sauce, spicy foods etc. I went to the doctor and he wrote me a script for Nexium. It worked wonders. You need to be careful with extensive heartburn it can lead to more serious problems I was told by the Doc.

Prolonged use of antiacids and such will begin to interfere with your digestive processes. I would just avoid the foods that give you heartburn. If you know your going to have a spicy meal keep the antiacids handy, just back off the spicy food.

I have a similar problem. I get heartburn frequently at night. I told my doc I was using zantac. She said to take one every night before bed. If that doesn't solve it, come back for something stronger.

So far that has worked rather well. It even kills off the heartburn from cialis. My wife loves that.

So it seems zantac is safe for long term use. Check with your doc about prilosec.

Thats what I was thinking. There is no way a dr. is gonna prescrib heart burn meds and tell you to take them long term if they are gonna cause major problems down the road. I'll have to look into zantac.

I get heartburn pretty bad when my androgen use is high (which is most of the year). I have found that taking digestive enzymes works even better than the acid reducers like Pepcid AC. Plus you get the added bonus of digesting and assimilating more nutrients from your food, instead of less which is what can happen when you take acid reducers.

I have had chronic heartburn for many years and am now on Prilosec.

Recently it has been determined that long-term use of acid-inhibitors have been causing hip problems....yep hip fracture problems of all things! The research showed the acid-inhibitors actually weaken the bones.......but this has been shown mostly in the elderly and 50+crowd.
