In my personal experience I can feel my lats getting hit a lot harder with a neutral grip or underhand grip on pulldowns/pullups. Also, the deadlift has been a huge part of my back development.
Add bent over rows to the stomach and seated rows with my elbows at shoulder level to the above for my personal recipe for great back development. However while my back is my best feature I'm no Dorian or Ronnie.
Dorrian and Ronnie both do a ton of heavy rows. Barbell, dumbell and hammer strength. I think chins and all the rows are great for WIDTH. Now for thickness i dont think you can beat the deadlift.
these three are the bread and butter. I might switch one out for another exercise every now and again but every time i buckle down on these, my back definitely improves!
