We all know that Vince was way ahead of his time and one of the fathers of bodybuilding IMO. Its been a long time since I look at Vince's diet and wanted to share this among us. I notice that some members here are eating raw eggs, as I recall Vince said that raw, fertile eggs stimulated the endocrine system and therefore naturally increased growth related hormones.

This was one of his shakes recipe -

One shake consists of:

Cream (half and half)
12 eggs (raw)
Water and Ice
Pure protein powder (quality whey/or milk and egg) - the powder is mainly for flavor.

Drink this throughout your morning as breakfast. Has anybody try this before? and muscle response to that?

MEAT, EGG AND WATER DIET

By Vince Gironda

During the forty years I’ve been a bodybuilder seeking greater muscle size and delineation, I have experimented with every imaginable diet combination. While training to win the “Worlds Most Muscular Man” title. I devised a diet that gave me maximum muscle size with almost zero body fat. It was what I call the “steak-and-eggs diet.”
Steak and eggs have always been an athlete’s favorite meal, because no other food combination gives you the same feeling of power and energy. Beef and eggs sustain a high-normal blood sugar level for up to six hours, which makes lunch unnecessary when you’re dieting and training for muscular definition. And three-quarter pounds of steak and three eggs provide over 100 grams of first-class protein.
Hamburger is not a good substitute for streak in this diet, by the way. The grinding of the meat destroys enzymes and other important nutrients. As a result, ground beef simply doesn’t measure up to other cuts of meat for building muscle tissue.
Surprisingly, some of the less expensive cuts of meat – like chuck and round steak – are higher in protein and lower in fat content than sirloin steak or fillet mignon.
The first time I tried the steak-and-egg diet, I stayed on it for nine months. I ate only two meals per day, each consisting of three-quarter pounds of steak and three eggs. At the evening meal, I also had a small, mixed green salad. I used no supplements whatsoever, and noticed no adverse effects as a result of this.
I achieved the best condition of my career on this diet. After nine months of contest dieting and training, I noticed that I was actually growing, not just maintaining maximum muscularity.
I know many of you will protest that this is an unbalanced diet and that there is too much cholesterol in the beef and eggs. According to recent findings in the National Egg Council, the human body produces far more cholesterol that it needs. And if you ingest more cholesterol that it needs, your body cuts back it’s own production to maintain a natural, balanced level.
Medial researchers are now concluding that stress is the major cause of abnormally high cholesterol levels in some individuals. Also, a high level of sugar in the diet tends to force the cholesterol level upward.
Actually, cholesterol is essential for the proper functioning of the human body. The brain requires it for normal function, and when you go out in the sun, cholesterol under the skin is converted into Vitamin D. Cholesterol also helps protect the body during cases of severe injury, because it acts as a sort of glue to stop bleeding in the traumatized areas.
In actual fact, cholesterol is not the culprit in heart and vascular disease. Instead, the villains are triglycerides, which are entirely different forms of fat.
Fat is essential in the human diet. Steffanson – in his book, Not By Brad Alone – mentions that during 18 years he lived among the Eskimos, they existed solely on meat and fat. Meat alone could not sustain them. Eskimos have been known to track a caribou for up to two weeks just to get the fat in the animal’s carcass.
Fat is the best source of energy known in that it yields nine calories per gram, as compared to only four grams or carbohydrate. Fat will sustain a high blood sugar level for up to six hours, while carbohydrates keep the blood sugar up for only 1 1/2 hours or so.
If you fear the calories in fat, keep in mind that fat is a lipotropic (a fat emulsifier), the same a vegetable oils. In other words, fat actually helps to burn fat in the body!
I think the real secret in the steak-and-eggs diet is the compatibility of beef and eggs, which confirm the “non mixed meal” dietary plan. Protein and carbohydrates are not compatible, since they are digested in different mediums (acid for protein, alkaline for carbohydrates).
When protein and carbohydrates are consumed together, neither digests completely. The food that is predominant in the stomach then takes precedence. If protein dominates, for example, the carbohydrates tend to ferment and produce gas and toxic (poisonous) byproducts. And if larger amounts of carbohydrates are ingested, they can cause the meat to putrefy, preventing proper digestion.
Another reason why the steak-and-eggs diet contributes to faster muscle growth is that the amino acid composition of beef and eggs is almost identical to that of human tissue. As a result, animal proteins are much easier to synthesize into human muscle tissue that are vegetable proteins.
I’ve often stated that 200-300 grams of protein per day in an athlete’s diet is excessive. I contend that your body will let you know when you’re getting more protein than you need – you’ll lose your desire for meat. Then you should give your digestive system a rest from animal protein by eating raw, steamed vegetables and salads for a few days.
You’ll know when to return to eating meat by the hunger you develop for it. Actual protein requirements are an individual matter. Such requirements depend on body structure, sex, age, activity levels and physiological capacity.
If you have been at a sticking point for a while, try my steak-and-egg diet for three meals per day. You should also take digestive enzymes, 1500-2000 mg. of Vitamin C, 400-800 units of Vitamin E and a phosphorous free calcium supplement each day. These supplements ensure that your body is receiving all the nutrients necessary for growth.
By combining this diet with eight hours of sound sleep per night and a positive mental outlook, you will experience a good spurt of muscle growth. And with steak and eggs, your added size will be 100% solid muscle tissue.

"Remember that nutrition is 90%; exercise is 10%."

I've been eating this way for over 2 years and I've never looked or felt better and doing so have concluded the following:

1. Carbs being required to grow and train optimally as a bodybuilder is one of the biggest fallacys in all of bodybuilding.
2. Saturated fat is GOOD for you in the absence of carbs
3. Massive protein intake is completely unnecessary and a huge waste of money, providing the protein you do get is of the highest quality, you will still grow on hamburgers, ground beef etc you will just have to eat more of it to get the same amount of useable protein vs a steak.

12 raw eggs are too much for me at one go.

so he ate only 2 meals per day

how did he decide how much protein he needed?

has anyone tried this diet?

like always Big chef brings out good articles,,

When I first read that article about 3 1/2 years ago I was interested and still experiementing with diet principles, I tried that diet for 1 week and lost alot of fullness in my muscles and was not able to train my regular volume but did not loose any strength

I later learned I cannot digest whole eggs, and I need carbs so this could be why..

Carbs being required to grow and train optimally as a bodybuilder is one of the biggest fallacys in all of bodybuilding

If this is such a fallacy then why does every body builder include carbohydrates in there diet...

Y arent there any keto genenic body builders?

hey chef,

I have used vinces diets for over two years now. his book "the wild physique" has all his diets listed in it.

anyway I am using his hormone precursor diet right now. vince said the hormone precursor diet is what he recommends for people who want to add muscle weight...not just weight. he said "nutrition for the bodybuilder is actually very simple. The bottom line is to get your system in positive nitrogen balance. this is done by ingesting 30-50 grams of grade protein every three hours to keep your blood sugar level with constant supply of protein to the muscles" and of course vinces favorite protein source....eggs. it is one of his favorite diets as he says you will never feel tired or hungry on this diet like you do on his meat, egg and water diet.

here's the diet:

breakfast:
Vince's special protein drink
12 0z half and half
12 raw eggs
1/3 c. milk and egg protein powder
1 banana
(make 1-3 mixtures of the above formula in a blender and drink it throughout the day between meals)

lunch
1 lb of meat
mixed greans or raw veggies

dinner
1-2 lbs steak or roast
raw veggie or salad and cottage cheese

that's it!....simple yet very effective.
I'm drinking one of the above vince protein shakes as I write this.(btw it tastes great!)
the way I do it( and I believe it's the way he intended it to be done) is I make the protein formula above and split it into two servings....if you add the protein up that's 60 grams per serving(depending on what powder you use) I drink one for breakfast then three hours later I drink the other half. some times I drink 2 servings sometimes 3 or 4 serving a day. but it's never more than six raw eggs at a time.

btw...he recommends this diet only be used for 6-8 weeks at a time before returning to a more balanced diet.

I am on my 6th week of this diet and will be running it through april. I always feel great on this diet and make great gains in strength while I use it. also my waist always shrinks up very nicely.

hope this helps chef

I eat sort of like this. I eat steak about every other day atleast..sometimes twice that day. I just like steak and I feel great when I eat it. I also eat ALOT of peanut butter. I always ate peanut butter...BUT since around nov, of last year I been eating about 3 PB sandwiches on multi grain bread. The bread is out of this world good. I put as much PB on the bread as I can...about a good 1/2 inch sometimes more. Be sure to have about 20-30 oz of gatoraid or something to wash it down with or you will choke LOL. Now the raw eggs...B-boy actually turned me on to this..he prob doesnt even know it. But I buy a carton for each day...when I drink a protein shake...I put in one cup of liq eggs with it. Honestly its the only way I can eat eggs anymore...the thought of eating cooked makes me sick...I guess that is what happens when you eat them every day of your life for so many years.

i thought the eggs would taste like crap but they actually make my shakes taste very good. I like them ....cause for some reason...2 scoops of whey in milk will fill me up a for alittle while....add 1 cup of liq eggs and I can drink it...and an hour later I feel like I am ready to eat again for some reason. Also I get no gas...no shits...no bloat or anything from these shakes.

So npc, you do milk, 2 scoops whey and a cup of egg whites? How much milk?

i put the 1 cup eggs(whole eggs bro...not whites) in....2 scoops whey..then fill the rest with milk in my shaker bottle...i would say around the top half of the shaker is milk.

Ok cool, I'm going to try this out thanks a bunch! My appetite is horrible in the morning so this could be a good way for me to get some quality Cal's.
Do you drink it as one or two meals?

Big chef I wanted to add that we all know he was ahead of his time in many of his approaches.. I really think he hit the nail on the head with his emphasis on quality of proteins,,,

NPC ,,, do you mix your peanut butter with whey to get sufficient protein because that seems like an unbalanced meal very high in carbohydrates both sugar and starch and high in fat... Curious to know what type of diet do you follow or is this just get the cals in type of diet

There's a sponsor on here that promotes the benefits of high fats.

Practice what that mountain dog preaches, and you'll see what I mean.

High protein, moderate/high fat, moderate/low carb is my way to go. He doesn't preach the moderate/low carb but that's my adjustment to the fat. The sources he chooses are golden. Grass fed butter, turkey thigh, etc.

Very cool article! Thsnk you, BigChef. ;)

This is why I started to do it bro. Couldn't eat eggs in the morning anymore. I count it as one meal. But I haven't been counting meals lately. Some days I'll have 5-6 meals... Somedays 3 all depends how I feel that day.

Thanks for posting.

What do you have for raw veggies?

Just noticed you put 1-2 pounds of steak. That is alot... just over 900 grams. I usually have about 1 pound of steak in a big meal. I thought that was a decent amount considering it is approx 120 grams of protein. 2 pounds is alot of steak in one go. If I done that diet I would probably add another meal of steak and do each at 1 pound.

I have started having raw eggs and so far not getting a bad reaction to them so gonna carry on. I have had 8 raw eggs today (4x2). Money is an issue but gonna add in more steak when I can... love steak. Will add more eggs too. But I love my fruit so that will stay in. Steak and pineapple is my fav meal. I will soon add in 1 pound of steak everyday.

What's old is new...

So true... often it is things that we have already read or know. You see them again and a :lightbulb: appears in our heads. But most importantly the basics work. I think I am gonna base my diet around raw free range eggs and steak. But I love my fruit so that will stay. I was doing this anyway but just want to make sure I use a good steak. I have been using mince beef solely due to cost... lots of that with pasta. So I will be adding in more structure to my diet and some staple items. Something like this...

6 raw eggs
2 scoops protein powder
Whole Milk
Banana

1/2 pound steak
Pineapple

6 raw eggs
2 scoops protein powder
Whole Milk
Banana

1/2 pound fish
Greens and/or vegetables

1/2 pound steak
Pineapple

6 raw eggs
Cottage Cheese

Thanks for starting this thread Big Chef :)

As far as salads and veggies go, vince actually writes out some pretty elaborate salad recipes.

I usually have, for lunch, a big raw salad(covers a dinner size plate) that consists of romaine or green leaf lettuce, yellow squash, zuccinni, tomatoes, broccoli, raddishes, red and green peppers and sometimes sprouts. I use an oil based dressing.

then for dinner I will have like two cups of steamed broccoli and cauliflower or green beans.

Because vince prefers fats as his main source of energy(even what he calls his balanced diet is very low carb) it's important to get plenty of calories from fat.
for instance for lunch and dinner I often eat alot of hamburger or steak for my meat choices so I know i'm getting plenty of fats there....but if I decide to have chicken or fish instead I will usually make sure to add a whole avacado to my salad or some cheese to make sure I getting enough cals to meet my goals.

And yes I have definately added mass using this diet. the first time I used the hormone precursor diet my weight went up 7 lbs and I lost a little over 2 inches off my waist. I was quite lean with vains in stomach and very visable serratus. I still got great pumps in the gym as well.
