I went to a new physical therapist today that is also a athletic trainer and she told me to not even to military press again. According to her it is a really bad exercise because humans were not "made" to do a exercise in that position. Idk if that is true but I LOVE military press and it is a great mass building exercise for me but I was wondering since I can't do it anymore what do you guys would recommend for me to do?

What are some great mass building exercises for shoulders?

Personally i like to do my overhead presses with a palms facing inward grip with dumbells. Much easier on my shoulders

there is probably no real life application of a decline bench press but apparently bringing your arms down and across your body is the best way to activate your chest (EKG studies ? i dunno i just got my grade nine) but ya overhead pressing can be hard on your shoulders and lower back. over the years i have to admit i have learned to do them less and less. right now im doing wendlers 531 system so i do them every week but often i'll overhead press every other week ish.

My right shoulder is probably permanent hurt from military pressing. Every time I try to do it, my right shoulder is in agonizing pain. Stupid me still does it anyway

I ONLY USE MACHINES NOW. STANDING PRESS HURTS MY SHOULDERS AND BACK.

I think you will be happy to see your shoulders don't decrease much if at all, in size without presses...
I don't do them and shoulders are same or better than ever. (I believe better than ever)
due to an injury I don't train biceps either. they are still bout same size as well.
no worries bro.

My PT told me the same thing. He also told me that humans weren't designed to walk upright and that why we have so many back problems. Then he walked out of the room to get me a tens machine lol! I guess it's personal preference.

My personal experience is that overhead presses caused much pain, I stopped doing them and my shoulders feel so much better. I think the trainer is correct, in our evolution we never performed overhead pressing in our lives.

Stopped pressing 6 months ago thanks to a brilliant mind on the site. Have felt pain free since.

I keep hearing that about shoulders, I think I'm going to give up presses for a month and see what happens. Biceps too? Hmmmmmmm.

You just made me feel bad for not google-ing it :/ lol

The fact that you do standing over head press is simply impressive. Military press is dangrous enough and adding standing up to it make it much more difficult. Personally I've only done it couple of times and it scared me because nobody can spot you.

Yeah I only did DB military press and she said no to that. For some reason the bar did not go well with me and I felt like the doubles hit it a lot better.

I would have walked out of the room in the other direction after hearing that.

Oh for the amount of time I haven't worked out I have lost a lot of size (I am actually afraid to measure any parts of my body). But as soon as I get back to it I'll be working with Shelby so I have uber high hopes! :)

LOL. I was always told to do incline bench on 30 degress or so to keep as much as the shoulder out as possible and she told me to do 45 degrees on that.

I just hope she doesn't take front squat away from me. I don't think anything can replace the effects that front squat has on the quads.

May be the reason why both of my shoulders have a torn rotator.(SLAP Labrum) But damn that movement builds the shoulders.

Love it. The form should be perfect to prevent injury.

Could a problem be the actual bench being used for (seated) military's? I've been doing them for years with no real problems at a gym that seemed to have a bench with just the right incline. Then the gym closed down and I've never seen a similar bench since. At one of the more popular chain gyms around here they have one of the worst military (free weight) benches I've ever used. Practically impossible to lift any weight off by ones self, so bad that I've resorted to whatever machines may be available instead.

If you do them seated with a barbell, you WILL eventually fuck up your shoulders and back. Standing is a different story. Standing presses allow you to properly use your trunk to stabilize your spine, provided you don't do them like a fucking moron. That being said, if your scapular motor patterns are all fucked up and retarded, or if you have a congenital predispostion for bad scapulohumeral angles (lanky ass arms and narrow shoulders), then you are better off using dumbbells/kettlebells. But for the love of God and all things holy, don't take them out of your program entirely. Just don't train them like a "bodybuilder"; you can get all jacked and swole without training to failure.

I don't post what I do for a living much, but I am a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as a Corrective Exercise Specialist, I work with both high level collegiate athletes and post-reconstructive surgery grandmas, and every single one of my clients utilize overhead pressing of some kind, and very little of it is done with machines. I work very closely with their physical therapists (if applicable) and any PT that has even looked at research articles over the last 5 years knows that properly incorporating the overhead press is key to long term shoulder health. The end.

Best exercise for me is behind neck military with a good form...
