This is just a note that there are a lot of motherboards, including new ones especially OEM that do not support onboard video when upgrading to i7 processors. For instance a Dell Optiplex 980, if an i7 is installed and you are trying to use the base onboard Intel Video Chipset, the screen will stay blank, and you will see the numbers 2 and 4 lit all of the time. Yes, you can install an i7 in most but make sure that you can do it without installing an extra video card especially if your motherboard will not support PEG (PCI Express Graphics). If you do have PEG, you will have to add a video card in with the cost. This is particularly a problem if you are running the box as a server because you would normally want base video, not a hot running add-in card for stability.
