Hello guys,

well, i am pretty down right now..
i had a leg session yesterday and started out with squats.
usually, i work up to 2 sets of 160kg x 5 reps.
So, i warmed up properly, did 2 sets of 15x 60kg, 1 set of 80x12reps, 1 set of 100x 12 reps, 1 set with 120x 12 reps.
Now ive went to 130kg and just wanted to do 8 reps.
well, on the 5th rep in the whole, i heard a tear and my right knee gave up and i collapsed. Also hurt my right shoulder in the process throwing off the weight..
immediately cold sweat, confusion, pale skin, fuzzy vision etc. Adrenalin was going through my body.
My colleague drove me to the hosptial but this shitty hospital did not even have a MRT.
So they wasted my time just to tell me i have to make an appointment @ an ortho and try to get an MRT soon.. well, thanks mr. doctor.. atleast they gave me a pair of stocks..
so went home, had crappy sleep, my knee hurts like shit, feels stiff, can not bend it and i am not sure what to do with my life. gym was a huge part of it, ive looked forward going to the gym every single day after work, it made me feel alive..
now im empty...sad. in pain... in depression etc..
sorry for the cry post

Just remember things could always be worse

It sounds like you can still manage to walk, so that is good. Try to find the positive things right now. You could be wheel chair bound now and not able to even go to work.

I hope that the damage isn't too bad. That is unfortunate that the hospital doesnt even have an MRI machine. I don't think the delay getting it looked at is going to affect you in the long run though, just cause you more anxiety because it is probably driving you mad not knowing what happened. Take it one day at a time.

You can probably still go to the gym, just not do any lower body. Be careful that you don't hurt the knee even more.

Things could be much worse. I tore both my quads and tendons off the bone squatting a few years back.
I was going to the gym in leg braces doing upper body then slowly started legs after braces came off.
Get the MRI and focus on recovery. You'll be back in no time.

You’re still going to go to the gym if you want to you’re just going to do a little less, you know the break will do you well in the long run! I know it just happened so the shock is messing with you but this isn’t to bad brother, make a conscious effort to try and be more positive about it!

thanks for your kind words guys..
and i have managed to get a MRT appointment tomorrow evening. I will have to pay it out of pocket (although i have insurance here in germany) but i think it is worth it. I rather pay 450€ than wait 6 weeks for an appointment because ive read that it gets worse and worse if you wait too long.
I can walk with my crutches, if i dont have them i can not really walk, only stand. Bearing weight in the knee hurts.
It seems its getting more swollen, but no bruising.
I guess after reading on the web that i have torn my LCL (lateral collateral ligament or something like that)
and you can bet that i will be working upper body in no time again at some machines where i can do it without bearing weight in the knee..
right now i still can not drive my car with the knee :(
@kandaandm:
how long did you have to rest until you could lightly train legs again? did you come back to your previous weights and leg mass?

and tips what i can do to preserve muscle mass? i am on androgel doctor advised trt. Ive bought BCM95 curcumin, glucosamin, hyaluron acid and cbd which should arrive tomrrow.
any more things i could add to help the injury?
thanks guy :)

My injury required bilateral quad and tendon reattachment. I had both legs in braces for 10 weeks. Then, It took 2 years of therapy and training until I felt pretty comfortable. Now 3 years post surgery I can train without any aches or unusual pain. The leg size has partially come back, but my priorities have changed and I don't go to the same extremes with gear and training as I once did. I would rather be as healthy and fit as possible instead of as large as possible. I'm happy at 230 instead of 260 and I'm healthier for it.

If I began "supplementing" as much I a had been a few years back and maxing out legs I couldn't tell you if the size would come back. I could tell you that the insertion points of my quads (ie tear drop, outer sweep etc) are slightly higher than they once were.

If you are in your 20s or 30s you could probably get the size back...look at Branch Warren or some other pros that have done it...like I said though..the insertion points may change a bit.

Whatever you do...don't rush it and be safe...may want to get some BPC-157 too.

I'm sorry that happened to you man. Worst I ever did was dislocated my hip dead lifting 720. I walked around for two weeks. It still effects me unfortunately. I've torn just about everything from the knee up.

For me i feel like everything revolves around the gym. Without it I feel lost. Just try to take care of yourself and control what you can.

I always make a game plan for when I come back. Do some research and take the time to learn something new. I would say the most important thing is to find a place to focus your energy.

I hope everything works out for your brother and you make a speedy recovery.

While it sucks, change your attitude. Your attitude determines how well and how fast your body will heal. Figure out what's wrong and go from there.

I'm no stranger to injuries and have experience the following:
-broke both legs twice, once was both simultaneously
-broke my hip
-shredded left knee (rebuilt)
-ruptured my left Achilles twice and they replaced it the second time. Also they fucked up the repair.
-tore my left pec tendon
-dislocated both shoulders, left one twice (last time was 4 weeks ago)
-five disc ruptures in my back confirmed, expecting more once evaluated again
-broke one vertebrae so bad 1/3 dissolved

I still lift 4-5 days a week, usually full body each time. I train hard but compared to before, not heavy. I've made adjustments to ensure I can keep training until I die. Now I focus on body composition instead of strength and miss the power lifting I loved.

It's all about attitude. Stay positive and conquer.

Were these from powerlifting or a sport? I thought I had injuries.

The pec tear was from training but the rest were work related.

M@NU, once you're healed a little you should re-evaluate your squat form. If you tore your MCL/LCL your glutes are weak and let your knees drift in. This twists the ligaments and pulls the knee out of alignment. If you tore your ACL your hamstrings are weak and you're lifting with your quads. This pulls the lower leg forward and causes ACL and meniscus tears.

hey freedom, hey bad_rad,

thanks for your words. I know i have to change my depressed attitude, my bodybuilding life aint over and i will overcome this obstacle.. i just have to stay positive and leave the negativity out of my head.
So i had my MRt yesterday and discussed the pictures with an ortho this morning (got fast appointment there but i think he wasnt really well with knees)
He thinks that i have partial quad tendon tear, partial LCL tear and a meniscus damage. But he thinks no complete rupture.
I will get a second opinion this evening and i have an appointment @ a knee speciailist on tuesday (out of pocket but i rather have more than 1 opinion and a specialist)

I dont think my squat form is bad. It was warmup weight. But i think i did a fucken stupid thing.. i have adjusted my feet under load and then went down. this probably put too much pressure on the knee.. :( my own stupidity..

does anyone know if there is any way to share the MRT slides with you? it requires a program. Or can someone tell me which pictures i could upload for you to check? is it possible?
thanks!! :)

Be careful with that knee. A guy I know ruptured his quad tendon in a freak accident and the rehab is long! Keep your head up, keep training upper body, and if the docs clear it trying gentle biking to move blood and fluid into the area.

My best gains were after busting my hip. I trained upper body 3 x weekly and gained 20lbs of solid mass in a few months.

I had a partial quad tear and they stitched it back on, recovery was rough but I came back stronger than ever. As for attaching pics online and having "bros" look at it your really wasting your time, let the people who get paid 100k and went to school for that review them. No one on bodybuilding forums can look at an MRI and diagnose anything and they may put ideas on your head that are wrong. hell my physical therapist who works on athletes wouldn't even look at him he said let the doctor do their job.

Yes, you are right to a degree, but last I knew there were quite a few professionals in ortho and surgical fields on here.

i think so too
and the problem i have is that i have two completely different results based on the same pictures from 2 orthos.
one is partial rupture of patella tendon and rupture of quad tendon.
one is rupture of some meniscus ligaments on the side of the knee..
first doc says surgery required, second says heals on its own..
i dont know what to do. I try to get a third opinion this week..
i could attach some screenshots if someone could tell me which view of the knee they want (maybe give me reference pictures from the web)
i would be really glad if someone of you with knowledge about knee issues could help me there. It would be a nightmare for me if i trust one of the docs and make a unnecessary move..
sucks paying a shitload of money for a fast mrt and docs seem to can not read it :/

Do you have health insurance?

Do you have health insurance?

yes, it is mandatory in germany.
but for some things or for "extra speed" its sometimes better to pay out of pocket.
MRT via insurance for example takes around 6 weeks for an apointment.

Got to love government run healthcare. That's unfortunate. I hope you can get a third opinion soon. I think once they get in there and see first hand what kind of damage has been done they will adapt their game plan accordingly. Surgery is probably the best option because it will allow them to explore exactly what tore etc. Maybe once they get in there they will see that there isn't as much to repair as they thought? Ask the surgeons about that possibility.
