SAN TEODORO. Franco Columbu (78 years), the bodybuilder-actor, a native of Ollolai, but for years resident in the United States, a great friend of the actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, died this afternoon August 30 after having suffered an illness while he was bathing on the beach at San Teodoro.

Franco Columbu died during transport to the Olbia hospital.

Seems to be true, as it is all over the Italian media. What a shame, one of the true legends of the iron sports, as strong as he was muscular, a Mr Olympia and World's Strongest Man competitor. He will be missed. Rest in peace, champ.

(ANSA) - NUORO, 30 AUGUST - Former bodybuilding champion and actor Franco Columbu, 78, originally from Ollolai (Nuoro), but always living in Los Angeles, in the United States, died in the early afternoon after accusing a sickness while bathing in the waters of San Teodoro, on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia.
World-renowned bodybuilder and friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Columbu was on vacation in Sardinia. The tragedy took place around 2 pm. Columbu was immediately rescued and transported with the helicopter to the Olbia hospital, where he died as soon as he arrived in the emergency room. The resuscitation maneuvers of the 118 staff were useless, both on the ground and on board the helicopter, for the former bodybuilder there was nothing to do.

Being a shorter guy I was always inspired by him. Also seemed like such a nice and down-to-earth guy. Really shocked and sad to read this. May he rest in peace.

Sad news. He was walkaways one of my favorites of that era. I remember watching him compete in the Worlds Strongest man competition. I always gave it his all.

Holy crap, this really sucks, and it is very unfortunate and sad

I can't say anything people here don't already know about him, I of course never even met the legend, but he is, and always has been, a staple of the word "bodybuilding," and it's whole lifestyle and sub-culture. An original OG of bodybuilding, and legend. Man, I really wasn't expecting to read this.
