In many cases yes but often (and I mean quite often) an older simplified version with less code bloat that does what it needs to and no more is the ticket.
that's why oldversion dot com is one of my go-to sites when I'm loading a fresh machine.
Besides... I use mostly VM's anyway so the host OS doesn't mean a whole lot anyway (Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon Rafaela -or- Windows 7 64-bit)
VM's - easily backed up, shut them down when finished, easily erasable, an additional layer of security w/NAT, excellent for running 2 or 3 operating systems simultaneously on one machine with copy and paste abilities from machine to machine.
