Gluten free diet and female hormones

My wife has started a gluten free diet months ago. All the benefits are there - no bloat, sluggishness, no more acne, lots of energy, etc.

But her hormones are all over the place. Periods totally irregular. Some massively heavy, others spotting. Big period pain when previously was hardly any, and so on.

She is not pregnant.

All her symptoms are exactly like here:

In that link, every woman posting has the exact same symptoms. And I found them right across the internet, but no matter how hard I searched, I haven't found a reason or a solution.

Any ideas?
 
its been a while since I have worked on this area so some of my terminology is a lil off but....

I think essentially what is going on is gluten fucks with hormones, particularly for women, in theory modern diet, high processed carbs and wheat products leads to increase in estrogens.

when you stop adding the stuff that is fucking with the hormones the natural hormones patterns start to come back. the thing is they are all fucked up from the years of eating shit that fucks with the hormones.

lots of things impact our natty production of hormones.

previous bc use will also come into play.

I think best thing that can be done is stick with the changes and limit cheat meals. that isn't to say it will totally fix the problem.

womens hormones can be very complicated and really need to be dealt with case by case, lots of small things can have an impact and often ppl want instant but that's not really possible with this as its a monthly cycle. lol

I would expect 10-20 months of doing the exact same thing to get some sorta stability.

work on diet n sups to be sure the basics are covered, fine tune that as you go n try to be very patient. remind her of that too.
 
My wife has Celiac disease and fibromyalgia...Her doctor placed her on the gluten free diet as well.

Her doc said that she couldn't give her a spot on reason for the hormone irregularity but that it may have something to do with the amount of time gluten stressed the adrenal glands and that once the gluten begins to leave the body it disrupts the usual cycle while it flushes out of the system...She said that usually within 6-9 months of being on the controlled diet (obviously everyone is different), that the system will regulate itself again?!

She was sleeping, lol...So I'll ask her more about it once she gets up to see if her doctor said anything else about it or if she suggested anything to assist in it.
 
I've lived this exact story with my wife. Literally everything from benefits to problems when she moved to Gluten free 100%. All the symptoms you mention and that are in that forum were present daily for about 6 months. It has been a little over 2 years now and they aren't there at all.

To your question as far as what causes it, we saw 3 different specialists over the course of 3 years and the "cause" was variable depending on the dr. The best explanation I got that real world results lined up with was "Our bodies are adaptable beings. Over time the body can adapt to almost anything, key word time. Also, some changes can be chain-like in effect- producing a desirable result, while at the time time creating hormonal upheaval. But with time the body will regulate". Made logical sense with my own personal experience with the body, so we ran with it.

I will say however, the symptoms slowly waned to the point now where now 2 years later she actually has re-introduced gluten sparingly without the negative effects. The timeline you explained though with your wife sounds about right depending on how many "months". But we saw her cycle begin to re-normalize after about a ~year.

Good luck and hopefully you don't waste as much money as I did to learn very little.

She had the same issues your wife is having, and our MD put her on a form of birth control. With that controlling her hormone levels, the other issues went away.

Her migraines reduced dramatically, but we don't know if it was because of the diet...or if the fact that her hormones were all over the place was originally the issue.

Sorry to not be able to help other than suggesting hormone therapy, and hope things get better for your wife. Mine was miserable when it was all happening.
 
Did she get very lean after dropping gluten? Women with low BF% will have irregular periods or simply stop having them.

She's actually put on weight as the body is finally absorbing nutrients. From 48kg to 52kg. She's 5'2.

Sorry to hear about that. I know it must be frustrating for her.

I have had the snip as well. Remember it like it was yesterday.

The Dr's office called me after a few weeks about bringing in a "sample" to see if things took like they were supposed to.

I told them that I was good and it didn't matter if it took or not because I wasn't going through that again!

there has been some interesting newer stuff to come out on womens bc, that said I always suggest staying away from most hormones for women...

obviously you have a pretty good idea on hormone stuff, and how all that can come into paly as we age.

most men here have opted for trt for life, doing that for women can be much more tricky. ( hrt not trt )

pick one thing to focus on at a time but at some point you may want to look into some hrt sort of options even though she may not like bc, bioidentical hormone mix and or various parts can help.
 
Agree with LK3, regarding the gluten. Multiple studies show that its seldom the actual gluten, but the processed and genetically modified food that contains guiten, that messes with hormone function. Too much crap in it, not actually nourishing simple food.

There will be a period of adjustment while her body shifts nutrient consumption and usage, as well as elimimating the crap from her body. A bioidentical hormone therapist can be very helpful, and natural, when it comes to making sure her hormones are balanced and adjusted. DIM is effective and adding additiomal EFAs from plant sources, in helping with the symptoms. Keeping the raw dark green vegetables high, can even incorporate green juices daily, this will more rapidly and effectively heal, repair, and balance. The rest of what is going on sounds pretty natural, and happens to most women during peri- and pre-menopause.

Continue to work through the diet, keep it balanced, but also on a lower carbohydrae side of things.
