The Presa Canario..

I have had Dobermans my entire life and truly love the breed. Although, my next I am thinking of getting a Presa Canario or Dogo Canario ( basically same breed just the FCI standards have differences ). I have been researching them for around 6 years and think I want this breed labeled the Ultimate Guardian. Does anyone own one and if so, are you happy to own one? Thanks!

Also, feel free to let me know if yours is stable, hyper, good with kids, obedient, stubborn, should a first time buyer own a male or female, etc.

My roommate a few years back had a female. She was great with my pit and got along great with all three of us that were living in the house. But it was a nightmare when anyone else came over. If it wasn't one of us walking through the door....look out. She never bit anyone but I can almost guarantee she would have if we weren't so on top of putting her away before people got to the house. On walks i had to be really careful as well. If she even saw someone walking towards us, it set her off. Luckily she only needed about 1/3rd the amount of exercise my pit needed.

They have to be socialized bigtime man, or like you said they are aggressive. They can be trained to be around other dogs because they are constantly in dog shows a foot away from other presas', so that behavior can be addressed and worked with.

Canary Islands and many top breeders in Spain, Poland, and I know a solid one in Germany.

Im not 100% certain of how he socialized at a young age, but I will say that I doubt a lot of effort was put into it based on how much effort he put into training/exercising since I lived with him. I totally agree that these things can be addressed and worked with...but if they ARENT, I think this is the way this breed tends to lean.

What breeder(s) did you purchase your dogs from? Can you post a few pics? Weights? I've looked at probably 8 different breeders and they all seem to have a different looking dog.....all claiming to be the breed standard.

The Presa's build is slightly open to different opinions, mainly do to the fact that for a long time it was thought to be a breed that served many different functions. In recent years it had be determined that the Canary islands used 2 different breed that were very closely related. One being the presa canario and the other being the presa marliquin or Cu Di Bo(bigger blockier with under bite). Some clubs don't adhere to this, even though the Russians and German genetic specialist that have researched have determined this.


So this open to interpretation leaves crappy breaders an opening, to say their dogs are correct.... I would suggest reading up on the history and going to club shows. Most good breaders still use a lot of imported stock, since the gene pool isnt diverse in the US.

They do resemble APBT quite a bit, so people ignorant of the breed will miss that...
