Ok i have been very much interested in paleo dieting, it seems to be great for those with autoimmune, and cardiovascular issues. Sean Croxton set up a series of interviews called the thyroid sessions, which has been very informative. Seems all the experts pretty much agree that a paleo diet, would work wonders for those dealing with thyroid issues (which i am). But i wanted to get some opinions from those on here that currently are on, or tried it and decided it wasnt for them. Please give me your most honest thoughts on paleo dieting, has it improved anything health wise, in general how do you feel now that you are eating in this fashion. For those that stopped (if any one has), what where your reasons for doing so. I want pure honesty here fellas/gals...the good, and the bad.

Also any books you could recommend on this subject would be much appreciated. I have downloaded a few, but maybe there are some i am unaware of. Thanks in advance

I eat about 80% paleo. Its a good clean way to change your eating habits. You probably won't find much support on this website about it, but in all actuality its really just a good clean diet and way to change your eating habits. Google a guy named Rob Wolfe. He is pretty much the Paleo Guru and has some really good reads. i bought his book and its pretty cool.

There are a few different opinions of what is paleo. I try and stick to the idea that you should be able to eat food in it's natural state (beans and potatoes need to be cooked) and avoid agriculturally developed foods such as grain....Some say to avoid nuts, I find them beneficial. And have found cooked sweet potatoes to be well tolerated.

also google Mark's Daily Apple for some information.

I am 99% paleo -- I do some dairy and some nuts. I've never felt better. I will be 51 in 2 days and I feel better now than when in my 30's and eating lots of whole grains as well as more processed food. Only problem is now I can't eat out hardly anywhere because my body tries to rapidly expel the crap food.

Here are two books I would highly recommend.

Your Personal Paleo Code | Chris Kresser's New Book

**broken link removed**

You may be able to find the at Barnes & Noble or Amazon or somewhere cheaper.

I eat more of a "Primal" diet than a "Paleo" diet but it's all shades of grey to some extent. I do dairy, rice and potatoes, and high fat. None of that is strict Paleo. Dairy and high fat is Primal though. Rice and potatoes I eat because of bodybuilding and because I have a very active job so some starch isn't going to kill me and I digest it just fine.

Since eating this way I have noticed; reduce joint pain, GERD disappeared, hair/nails grow faster, less allergies and better energy.

It makes too much sense to ignore IMHO. There are a few threads in here about Paleo that may help. There is one that is basically Paleo Food Porn that I have posted a bunch in to help give you ideas of how well you can eat on a Paleo diet. Many people think it's restrictive, but once you start expanding your notions about food, you'll find there is way more things you can eat than things you cannot. Feel free to PM if you need any more info.

I personally think paleo diet is a good diet to get lean but everyone has their own opinion

Yes, your personal paleo code, is one of the books i recently got, not done with it yet, but so far a great read. I also subscribe to his podcast, so informative. He was actually one of the experts Sean Croxton used in his Thyroid Session series of videos. He, and many of the other experts spoke on paleo (or at least paleo like) diets being great for improving your natural production of TH. They mentioned purple/sweet potatoes, yuca, and plantains all being very good for your TH.

They all seem pretty much in agreement that for most, gluten causes some of most problems with regards to TH production. They spoke of autoimmune issues, inflammation, soy, sugar, and how doing a CKD type diet, for many is one of the worst things you can do, if having issues with your TH levels. All this really sparked my interest in paleo.

The Gluten-Thyroid Connection <--- check that out.

I actually listened to the interview he did with Sara Gottfried about thyroid problems. Good stuff. I'll check out the Chris Kresser one too. I love reading his stuff. Very informative and he does a great job at maintaining objectivity.

I have found all the benefits as you my friend. However i still struggle with GERD from time to time. I was always told that my GERD was caused by excess protein. I have discovered in the past month that mine is caused by carbs. Its been eye opening but i still struggle with it from time to time.

I eat no processed foods, protein from eggs, venison, beans, whey, lba's. Carbs from fruit and beans, occasionally gluten free oatmeal. Fat from olives, olive oil, tree nuts (some), coconut oil. Nothing artificial, other than the little bit of stuff in the whey and lba's. No taters, rice, bread (some Ezekial), sugar.

not sure if this is Paleo but i feel incredible, and have dropped 20lbs of fat in last 60 days.

I definetly agree that the rice and potato's should be included in there, even just for thyroid health as well as boosting serotonin.

Im going to be removing rice from my diet just to see how i feel with out it. Honestly this month will be mainly a tester, to see what does/does not work for me. I will be eating sweet potatoes, yuca, plantains, purple potatoes (God willing i find them), etc. These are all said to help those with thyroid issues. Im cutting out sugars, breads, wheat, legumes, and a few others. Im hoping this really helps with many of my current health concerns, losing a few pounds will just be an added bonus.

I think its great.
up protein requirement and use sweet potatoes at right times but otherwise focus on fruits n veggies with lean meats and its a pretty easy way to get lean. I always recommend it to "normal" folks wanting to lose weight. it cuts out a lot of bullshit.

Simple enough.

i guess it depends wate your goals are and taste buds lie.

I love protein and veggies and fruit unforntunately i will never get to where I want to be eating this way. I could eat protein like starburts all day long.

diet is more than health in my opinion its about everything in balance, i do believe that bodybuilders eat way too much protein

Paleo is good.

Remember to take 125G Carbs Minimun per day from Starch source.

People dont really need more than 150G Carbs per day, but 125g is minimun for healthy thyroid function.

Sweet potatoes, rice, oatmeal all good source

On day 3, so far so good! Im actually doing better than i thought i would, i completely eliminated rice, breads of any kind, wheat, gluten in general, artificial sweeteners, dairy, and legumes. I went to the grocery store, and purchased as much organic only products as i could...where i live (small town), i dont have access to places like trader Joe, or whole foods, so i have to make do with what i have (also the closest WF's , or TJ's would be roughly like 2 hours away). I loaded up with steaks, pork tenderloin, chicken breast, and eggs. Vegetable and fruit wise, i got purple potatoes, sweet potatoes, yuca , green plantains, yukon gold potatoes, tomatoes, avocados, broccoli, peppers, strawberries, raspberries, blue berries, apples, bananas, seedless grapes, and few others...all organic. Of course i got cold pressed organic extra virgin coconut , olive oil, and a product i dont remember ever seeing in the grocery store...a 100% grapeseed oil non stick spray. Again this is mainly a trial period to see what works best for me, once i know, then i can start adjusting to my preference.

I want to thank all of you for responding to this post, i really appreciate all the suggestions, opinions, and all the sharing of personal exp. with this diet.

Basically what JS said. I put my mom on it and she loves it. Never felt better.

I follow a paleo diet with few exceptions for bodybuilding. My strength took a momentary dip and is back more than ever and I feel amazing. My overall health seems to be better as well. Youll need to be a little creative in the kitchen with flavoring but I cant say enough good about it.

I find that I need a good 40 grams of carbs per meal to maintain fullness otherwise I look stringy and flat.
