Anyone else here do olympic lifts?
I just started using them in my routines to focus on explosion for rugby.

So far I have done snatches and jerks, wondering where I compare for strength in those lifts. I will also be doing power cleans, front squats, and various other oly lifts.

Right now my weights are:
Snatch - 215
Jerk - 275

Others:
Squats ~ 500, checking next week
Bench 405

I am 6'1, 225lbs, 21 years old

I do hang cleans on occasion. Less weight than you. Great for rugby, not so sure about bodybuilding, greater likelihood for injury too. I think they are excellent. And very cool. Tough to compare weight tho as these lifts involve a heck of a lot of skill and technique. I muscle the bar up and don't use my legs nearly enough.

Im in the same boat sometimes, I muscle it more than I use technique. Screws me up but something Im working on...Cleans are my least favorite

I'm a huge fan of power cleans and power snatches vs the full lifts for sports training. It's the violent second pull that I feel translates to the field. I have been working upto a heavy single p snatch before my Monday squats, and a heavy single p clean before my Friday DL.

Olympic lifts in my opinion are the underrated movements in powerlifting. I am seeing a greater use of olympic movements in crossfit. I find them highly effective. Think about the soviets (as Louie Simmons often praises).

They are great movements. Just stay away from crossfit and you'll be fine.

I don't see the need unless they are sport oriented.

I think they lead to greater chance of injury, especially without a coach.

I've hit a 335 continental clean and push press, and 365 btn split jerk.

Look up the "bear complex" and have some fun with that :).

I think it was Wendler that said something like 'if you can powerclean a lot of weight with terrible form that's a good thing because it means you're just fucking strong.'

I do power cleans and hang cleans.I'll tell you nothing builds my traps like them.

I havent done cleans in a few years. was totally natty at the time and it really helped me add thickness to my back. I was in the same power up technique. but if you're doing it for a sport I'd definitely work on getting better form. get the most out of it.

I have my athletes do hang cleans, hang snatch, push press, push jerk, and split jerks. Triple extension is what you are after for explosion that translates to increased sport performance. Start with the hang variety until your technique is sound. I don't do even do power cleans now but I'm old and there is no extra benefit, in my opinion, over hangs. Front squats should be included also. I do fr sq and SSB sq and find I get the most benefit from them. Good luck with Rugby I like to watch it as it can be brutal at times.

man im a strength and conditioning coach at a college plus i help a very good friend out that owns a badass gym/performance center,,,i develop and orchestrate all my athletes programs based on compound movements emphasis on press, push, pull, squat anything else such as a extension or lunge is secondary that works out to be a 3 day split such as mon, wed, fri, other days conditioning, plyometrics, such forth,,now some things such as volleyball i have to devise some sport specific exercises but compound movements is a great core emphasis on overall power i use to personally do it that way in off season but time limits so i do cosmetic or bodybuilding workout,,,if you are having trouble with form look up john davies he is a well known strength and conditioning specialist works with UPSlabs and has renegade training super smart kat makes it sound very simple and it just makes sense

If I didn't have specific goals in mind and wanted to choose a couple of lifts to keep a well rounded regimen of fitness going I would definitely choose the Olympic lifts over all others. To me they are the funnest lifts to perform, I love the explosive nature of moving heavy weight at a fast rate of speed with agility thrown in. When I competed in Olympic weightlifting my best numbers in competition were: snatch 286lbs(130kgs) clean&jerk 330lbs(150kgs) @ 215lbs body wt

Yes I still keep many incorporated in my workout and my young athletes it will be 80% there workout compound movements that is

i love olympic lifts.
proper form and technique is the key to them. someone recently asked "if you could only do 2 lifts in the gym for the rest of your life what would they be?"
mine were squat and clean (not power clean) and jerk.

clean and snatch are my favorites. i also like the power clean but the full clean (with squat) is by far my favorite as i love to front squat so my numbers are pretty decent for my body weight.
my least favorite lift is the split jerk. i can push jerk more than split jerk which isnt normal. i just feel very unstable in the split position.

i love olympic lifts....clean and snatch are my favorites.
Bump, if I had to choose one lift and only one lift to do over and over again it would be the snatch. Plus I like heavy front squats for their ability to build core strength and stability. Snatch balance is another good overall strength builder
