Ok, so i posted yesterday about the deadlifts, well, woke up plenty in the middle of the night and back is much worse than expected.. so everyone heard the loud pop when i was deadlifting, back of right leg went numb for a few seconds then normalized, no pain at all. Finishes workout, no more lower back work though of course, then maybe 4-5 hrs later it began getting tight. By bed time it was gettig sore. When i went to sleep it hurt a bit but was tolerable for sure. Woke up about an hour or so later and it hurt bad, and if moved in a few different positions or do anything wrong, my lower back/hip (its very low back and into the top of my ass) it kind of spasms i guess youd say? When it happens it hurts and wants to give out. When i walk i have to do it very slow and shift all of my weight equally at once to whichever foot i am switching to, if not, it will happen within a couple steps. Bending down hurts, performing a squat motion is very painful..

A few questions... does anyone know enough to diagnose this? Is it something that needs work or that will go away on its own with rest/heat? If i need to see someone about it, what would be my best route? Chiro? To be honest i have no insurance and am in a tight spot right now... so if i HAVE to see someone i will, but id like it to be only one trip instead of a week of getting sent to different places, i cant afford it and i am in pain if it isnt something that will let up... thanks

Get some one qualified to diagnose it, back injuries are no joke, it sounds like a QL injury but you need to see a pro in person to get it figured out.

I asked in there who would you suggest? A PT? I dont know of any sports clinics around and family docs are a joke.. would a physical therapist or chiro be my best bet?

Welcome to the world of bulging disk(s). Go see a doc get a real diagnosis it may as simple as a really bad muscle strain. Althought the leg numbness leans toward bulge. Back injuries are a nightmare. Get it diagnosed and then do the rehab religiously. If you are lucky it will heal and you can go back to a normal life.

Well honestly im feeling its more of a nerve aggravation at this point. Both other boards ive posted this on are leaning towards this and have recommended ice and relieving pressure for a few days. Im going in an hour to get it looked at by a chiro and see what they say, no familu doctors worth a damn around here and very few specialists, and pretty much all have to be recommended by a family doc first. Ha.

I dont think its as serious as a ruptured or bulging disc, knock on wood, since i have been up and moving it has loosened ALOT and it isnt nearly as easy to trigger a spasm and i have a lot more mobility and not a lot of pain, moreso just tightness

Ive been lucky to have 2 really good chiros in my time, some people dont believe in them but the results they got me were undeniable.

Im going to go have it looked at and do atreatment, and follow up with other advice ive been given. Capsacian cream rubbed on, icing it 3x a day, and keeping pressure minimal and taking it easy. Thanks everyone.. ive talked to a few bros who have had a lot of back injuries and knew exactly the one i have and apparently its not serious as long as taken care of properly. Supposedly a muscle strain

I herniated my l5-s1 and l4-l5 and didnt have use of anything on the posterior side of my left leg.. ok i had some use but it was about 20% of normal

Right now, prop one leg up and touch your toes, then do the other... one sides way tighter right?

1)Start going to a good chiropractor, a bigger guy since youre probably pretty muscular and tighter than most people

2) get those hamstrings and glutes loosened up, i HIGHLY advise you look up kelly starett and start doing alot of his lower body mobility work...

5 months after regaining ability to walk normal from doing this stuff im back to a high 6 raw squat and deadlift and a 900ish geared squat @ 235...

I would hit up a chiropractor I have had great luck with using them for anything related to back pain hip pain ect

So its a muscle strain according to tge chiro as well. Nothing serious but he said im extremely flared up and also some issues with hip allignment, gonna do a few visits and hopefully be ok. He told me to take rest of the week off from the gym

And luckily it's a strong ass pler from my gym as well haha

Read your original post. How many strained muscles do you hear go pop? You mentioned nerve pain in your next post. The bulge in the disk is what compresses the nerve and causes the pain. Now, I truly hope all you have is is a strained muscle, but either your description is not comensurate with the injury, or the diagnosis is not comensurate with the injury. By the way, many disk bulges are incorrectly identified as as muscle strains in the initial stages. You need an MRI to correctly identify a bulge. Good luck.

:yeahthat: I agree with POWER 100%. I have had 2 back surgeries now, one April 18th of this year. A chiro can not diagnose a disc problem and honeslty a good chrio will not adjust you with the systems you talked about. Chiros have their place but not with major back issues. Also any chiro or doc that does an xray and says you don't have a disc problem doesn't have a clue. The only way to know is with an MRI. I'm not syaing you have a blown disc but is sure esounds like it because my first one happend the same way. Do yourself a favor and find a Ortho that will work with you since you don't have insurance. Best of luck man!

These guys are correct there is no way for them to know if its a bulge or rupture from an x-ray, the only way to tell is to get an MRI done. Get some good medical insurance and get one done cause they are not cheap....

Back issues

Find a good chiropractor that has a DRX-9000. Its a traction machine light years ahead of all others. Its has worked wonders for me.

Like a lot of others have said, any numbness or pain down your leg is definitely not just a muscular issue. That means a nerve is being pressed on / irritated, most likely by disc fluid. The pop is very strange, never heard of someone actually having a pop when they herniate a disc. I've had 3 herniated disks in my lumbar spine for around 8 years now and you really just need to let them heal when they are in the acute phase. The decompression / traction stuff can help, but it isn't a permanent fix and it does stop helping when you stop doing it. And it is also incredibly expensive. An inversion table is much cheaper and a decent alternative. The pain and spasm in your lower back is a self protective mechanism by your body to prevent you from hurting it worse. It happens to me every once in a while. Go see a real ortho that specializes in spine. He will most definitely order an MRI and you will know what is wrong right away.

If that is what you have, I would say surgery is always a dead last option. You're better off letting it heal and for the rest of your life you will have to make sure you spend time keeping your core very strong (ie TA holds, etc). Also, once you have a herniation, you're at a very high risk of additional disc fluid leaking out even after you no longer have pain, so heavy loads compressing your spine will be very risky, as will deads without perfect form in your lower back. I've learned how to train around mine, but I will say I do not load anything heavy that compresses my spine anymore and I am insanely OCD about keeping my lower back in it's natural lordosis.

As i already stated the numbness in leg lasted for about 3 seconds and never showed again. Yes, i realize if i had leg pain it could be sciatic nerve, but i dont, i think it just irritated a nerve slightly when i popped. Its much better now, still tight but thats about it.
