According to multiple sources, including Yahoo Sports and the Las Vegas Review Journal, a deal has been reached for former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) to come out of retirement for a boxing match with UFC champion Conor McGregor on August 26 in Las Vegas.

The date, requested by Mayweather Promotions for a Showtime event, was approved on Wednesday morning by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Mayweather, 40-years-old, retired from boxing in September 2015 after dominating Andre Berto over twelve rounds. The McGregor fight will either take place at the MGM Grand or the T-Mobile Arena. Mayweather Promotions reserved the MGM, but the venue could change to the T-Mobile.

When talk of the fight was first discussed last year, many felt it was a bad joke - but the amount of money involved - at least $100 million for both athletes - made both sides come together for serious negotiations.

Last month, the Irishman has struck a deal with the UFC and company president Dana White to allow him to compete in the one-off megabucks event.

McGregor took to social media on Sunday, advising his followers that something very big was on the horizon.

Besides placing a hold on the MGM for August 26th, Mayweather's promotional company has also reserved the arena on August 25 for a weigh-in.

Personally I always thought this fight will happen because too much money is involved. We still have a couple of months to go so anything can happen between now and Aug so take this news as a grain of salt but it is the most concrete news we have that this fight will happen.

If McGregor wins it will be the biggest upset of all of sports history, IMO.

It's a boxing match with full size gloves, boxing rules?
If so McGregor doesn't have a chance. Now if it was mma rules THAT would be much more interesting.

Yes its a straight up boxing match.

There is always that " what if mcgregor connects "

Will be exciting to watch just to see it mcgregor can plant one good punch.

Floyd will likely dance around him though

Can't wait for this one. If Connor loses he still gets a huge payday...much bigger than he gets in the UFC. So even if he loses.....he wins.

I was suckered into buying the Mayweather Pacquio fight, this will be the same boring fight that will go 12 rounds and Mayweather will win on points easily... boxing match definitely favors the boxer and if it was MMA rules McGregor would destroy him

100 million for both guys? They both already won....but it would be exciting to see Mcgregor knock him out.

This - mcgregor doesn't have a shot.

I hate mayweather, but there's no way he'll lose.

The MMA pool of talent can't compete with boxing IMO.It's been around too long and is too large. There's a huge disparity between the top fighters in both sports, at least as far striking goes. Over time we will see some crossover talent, but I just don't think it can compete yet. I can't wait until it does. I do think mma will catch up fast though.

I went to Vegas for the Mayweather pacquiao fight, host took care of me at the last minute it was my managers birthday I said fuck it let's go they even put us on a discounted flight.

By far the worst trip to Vegas I've ever gone on and I've gone dozens of times even in winter. Everything was jam packed and it wasn't packed with girls there to slut it up as usual it was packed with hood rat guys looking for fights. The casino had to randomly shut down the pool and do crazy crap to keep from just being overwhelmed with trouble, fights everywhere and shootings that were never put on the news.

Just a warning if anyone decides they want to go....

On a semi related topic, has anyone noticed that traveling on any holiday weekend is all annoying kids and families? I've learned not go to destinations on holidays unless I'm expecting that.

this is the stupidest big money match in the history of combat sports... a non ranked boxer going to challenge 1 of the greatest pound 4 pound boxers of all time ( i can't stand FMM either)...going to be so lopsided in Vegas... Floyd will be Floyd and Conor will never touch him just like the biggest killer sharks couldn't touch him in their own world... i literally can't believe the fans that cheered this bout and waste of money on... there is no way i will pay to watch this kindergarten playground beatdown that is about to occur, and will just download it that sunday morning

I'm pulling for McGregor but he may be a little out classed in the boxing ring.

But he's a fucking hard ass worker and I think he has a shot, we'll see

This is the biggest joke ever. It makes Boxing and MMA look bad. I hope nobody buys the PPV and it's a huge failure.

I'm a boxing fan but a bigger MMA fan and I can honestly say that I hope Floyd KO's him in the 1st or 2nd round. The fact that this is how Floyd will get his 50th win and break Rocky Marciano's record is shameful. The fact that McGregor didn't defend the 145lb belt because he was too busy fighting two fights at 170lbs wasn't fair to the contenders...he should have been stripped of the 145lb belt long before he gave it up and the fact that he hasn't defended the 155lb belt because he's too busy with this current spectacle is a disgrace. He should be stripped of the 155lb belt since he hasn't defended it in 7 months and at the time of the Maywether fight, it will be 9 months...probably be over a year by the time he actually defends it. It's disgraceful and not fair to the fighters that are/were in line for a title shot.

no doubt, it fucking stupid, conner does not stand a chance, as long as people line to pay for shit like this it will keep happening, just like the joke of a fight between pac and Mayweather, for that fight to have got any interest from me it would have had to happen 5-6 years earlier, but even then I would not have got a ppv, lol, I can see people getting pimped out again, then being pissed about a lackluster boring fight.

Connor gasses and gets tko'd in the later rounds. The best thing about this fight is the amount of money you can make betting with mma noobs.

conor knows he is an underdog but doesn't really care with the millions they will both collect, and I don't blame him. I'd take a beating for that much money too! I think mayweather wins easily.

If anyone believes that boxing is going to let a mma athlete step into their ring and win, in his first fight, against their most dominant and popular fighter, you are crazy and sadly mistaken.

Even if it is an "even" fight, boxing will give the decision to it's own athlete. Greed rules the day.

Only if boxing has something worked out with conor, would they ever let him win. If boxing will cheat it's own athletes out of victory, then it surely won't have a problem in cheating it's main competition, MMA, out of winning also!

I wish they would've worked out a deal for one boxing match and then one mma fight in the octagon. I would love to see conor destroy floyd in the octagon. The hype, trash-talk, and pre-fight shenanigans will be more fun and entertaining than the actual fight itself!

I completely disagree and think this comparison is irrelevant. Boxing is not MMA. Boxing is one specific, limited fighting style, while MMA encompasses a vast array of different disciplines (all of them).

I once heard an old-school boxing fan, who disliked MMA, say that "the striking in MMA sucks", to which the MMA fan replied "yeah, and the wrestling in boxing really sucks!".

The point here is pretty obvious, which is that these are two completely different sports. The top talent in MAA is every bit just as talented as it is in boxing. It is unrealistic to expect the striking, on average, to be as good in the MMA as it is in boxing, as MMA requires a MUCH more diverse skill-set. In other words, the top MMA fighters have to learn multiple disciplines...and achieve a high level of competence in all of them. They don't have the time to focus on just one thing.

At a minimum, they have to learn western boxing, wrestling, submissions, and how to throw kicks. If they did focus on just boxing, or put a disproportionate amount of time into it, they would get their asses handed to them in the ring due to incompetence in all the other areas. This brings me to my next point, which is that even the best boxers in the world would get destroyed by even low-level pro MMA fighters.

Boxing may have been around longer, but it is dying a slow death. MMA has already surpassed boxing from a popularity standpoint in the United States...and several other countries as well...and is in position to continue growing, while boxing will continue to decline.

I personally like both sports and consider western boxing a crucial element of MMA (note: western boxing is the most devastating striking art in the world, which is why any good MMA fighter worth his salt includes it within his program), but it is just one element, not the whole. MMA is much more comprehensive than boxing--and creates the most dangerous fighters in the world (the top boxers would never win in a no holds barred fight against the top MMA fighters). There's not even a question there. The only way a top MMA fighter is losing in a no holds barred fight against a top MMA guy is if the MMA fighter is stupid enough to try and beat him at his own game (hand striking alone). If an MMA fighter fights intelligently, the only way a boxer is winning is if the MMA guy happens to get clipped going for a takedown, but being that boxers don't train to throw punches at knee level, I would say the chances of that happening are pretty low.

Randy Couture vs James Toney is a prime example of this. Randy took down James who was a boxer, then beat the pulp out of him on the ground, ending the fight.
