Help understanding my MRI results

Benn having back pain and some nerve pain in my right leg for three months now, mostly annoying rather than agony. I got my MRI results today but the boycott is off for two weeks so didn't get an explanation of them.

So I have minor bulges of the discs at L2 , l3 and L4 and a slight protrusion of the L5 disc pressing on a nerve on my right side.

Any advice from the community on how to manage or fix it and exactly what it means or how serious it is. I am 38 with a history of Olympic lifting, then power lifting and some bodybuilding but now I just enjoy training for fun and this has been a major set back for me.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I know there is a lot of knowledge here.

I have had some of the same issues. Get your Dr. to recommend the best physical therapist in the area and go for some treatments you will be good.

please post up the actual findings as they were described.

What I posted is all I have got my doctor texted me on her way to airport for holidays and said she would give me the report when she gets back in two weeks so I am sort of wondering what to do while I wait on the report, said it was nothing major but was unexpected for someone in their thirties so will need further investigation or treatment and that was it. Sorry I don't have anything more yet, are bulges and protrusions treatable or just managed?

It depends on the size of the protrusion and whether or not its only a protusion or if there is a superimposed extrusion. you then need to consider the hydration status of the disc and if there is room for it to dessicate, where the protrusion is so how much room the nerve has, is there any osseus component.

You will get a lot of made up advice just trying to be helpful but its just made up random advice until you actually know more. but if you really want ill informed opinion id day you are in your 30's disc is probably good aside from whereever that protrusion is, it will likely decrease in size over time so be less of an issue but more likely to rupture in the future if you arent careful.

I would take some aleve for the next 7-10days and consider some traction therapy as it wont hurt however we need to know more when you get that report

Thanks I will post my proper results up when I get them just freaking out with the sound of bulges and protrusions, I love lifting weights not even particularly heavy any more but my back has hardly allowed me to even do much of that lately due to the discomfort the next day.

The good news is this may be an early warning sign. I no longer advocate heavy axial loading exercises for most casual lifters. For high level competitive athletes its done for particular reasons but for most guys who just enjoy working out and being in great shape its not needed to go so damn heavy and push the limits of our connective tissue.

In my early 20s i bought into the idea of heavy lifting and did a few powerlifting competitions (locally) and trained like that. Nearly all the guys i trained with back then are complete wrecks with their bodies falling apart. Yet the guys who did more bodybuilding and with higher volume are still mostly healthy.

Post up the results when you get them but plan to limit heavy axial loading because of the fissure of your annulus is gonna scar up if the protrusion heals but make it much more likely to rupture in the future
