Naproxen limiting muscle gains?

Hey all. Been taking 2 500mg Naproxen pills per day to help with my shoulder inflammation issues and it has helped tremendously. Got them from the doctor. Now I'm hearing that taking Naproxen can impede muscle growth. Was looking for some opinions on this? First of all is this true? If so what is considered "too much" to take? Should it be spaced out away from workouts? I'm gonna cut back to one pill to see if the inflammation returns because I feel generally don't like staying on any medications on a prolonged basis. I have been on this dose for probably about 2 months.

Thanks so much

I have taken these and not noticed any issues you mentioned, i have shoulder and lower back issues, i personally prefer to use Algesal which is a Local Analgesic Cream so applied topically. Sorry cant be anymore help hopefully someone else can :)

Thanks for the reply

u been lifting for 2 months with a bad shoulder. and have enuff pain that u need higher than normal nsaid doses.
ever consider stopping what yr doing to let yr body heal?
what u thinks gonna happen if u keep pushin it when yr body's telling u to stop and the aleve is just masking the pain?

Yes it will limit muscle gains in general but if you're on AAS, might not be the case. No study has been done on people who are taking naproxen and juicing.

Why are you using naproxen instead of curcumin is my question

Consider this. I know it sucks to not be able to train...I just went through a period where I couldn't do anything for over a year.

But I can tell you that after starting back up lifting...all the other little "nagging" issues that I experienced that wasn't related to my bigger issue went away!

Inflammation is the start of the healing/postglandin production process. When you interfere with this some benifits/gains can be expected to be less. Just because some one can still make gains does not mean that they made all they could have.

Another thing I would consider about taking that much naproxen for an extended period of time is that naproxen and all nsaids can tear your stomach up. I ended up with an ulcer which was in part due to taking too much naproxen and ibuprofen.

basically all nsaids do this sorta thing.

the idea however that they are inhibiting muscle gains in this crowd is kinda silly.

that said, i think it is much more "silly" to eat anything like this one a long term daily basis.

bad news, stay away:lightbulb:

I agree with the above, try and find a different approach Im currently seeing a physiotherapist to manage my problems, its more mechanical than anything, the question i asked first was "shall i stop weight training" the answer surprisingly was no and to keep training, however I have reduced the weight and I concentrate more on technique etc which has helped along with seeing a massage therapist. Drink more water and if your not already doing so get some fish caps.

A lot of the times we are given things to "mask" the pain which is not good, therefore its up to yourself to find alternative ways and listen to your body.

I was given the same and also pregabalin along with diazepam but i managed it my own way

Long term NSAIDs are not the answer. If you take naproxen at the highest recommended dose it should be to quiet a flare up, not for maintenance. Like other have said, look to find what is creating the issue rather than hiding the issue with an NSAID. I would only do what you're doing long term if I had no choice or were going to compete and needed to make. It through a certain time frame before addressing the issue.

A very high percentage of people who go to physical therapy are on some sort of antiinflammatory and still make gains in the PT. There are studies that say NSAIDs limit muscle recovery but in reality I don't think it matters much. But again, rethink your approach.

Didn't know the dose was very high. It's how the doctor wrote up the script. I'm doing a show in 6 weeks and decided to push through and rest up when it's over. Since I have started taking the naproxen I have felt amazing and have full range of motion so I assumed I was good to go. I'm cutting it back now and will see if the inflammation creeps back up.

Thanks you so much. Yes, I'm competing in 6 weeks. Then I will tackle the cause of my issues

Just a thought I had. I do my Test Prop injects in my shoulder, alternating sides with EOD injects. Is it possible that this is the cause of my issue?

That is highly unlikely. If this were the case we would all be hurting all over and the pros would not be able to move.

When you see you doc back... Did he do imaging? X-Ray, MRI?
Is he offering physical therapy. PT will address the underlying issue unless it's a surgical case. Us lifter generate a lot of forces in the body which can degenerate joint faster than general public. Make sure your joints are supported with the internal muscles being able to protect the joint.

Keep us informed and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I would only use NSAIDS when absolutely necessary. Most definitely not a daily regimen. I get joint pain a lot and some time pretty severe. I will use some thing like NAPROXEN for a day or two and then maybe not again for a month or more. I think they can be beneficial while not being harmful if used correctly.

Had an X-ray. Said inflammation, possibly tendinitis, impingement syndrome. Said. O need to go to the specialist. But gave me a referral for PT
