Those of you who use Metformin as a tool to aid in fat loss, what is your protocol?

I'm especially interested in:

Dose & timing of the dose (including with a meal or without)

The results you saw from the protocol

Any side effects you experienced

I just started with 250mg with my last meal today. I've heard of gastrointestinal distress being an issue the first few weeks, so my plan is to slowly increase the dosage (250mg each week, until I reach 1000mg/day).

Took 250mg of Metformin last night with my final meal. Did fasted cardio this morning and could feel something nasty brewing....

Right after cardio I had an extremely foul smelling stool that was mishapen (diarrhea-esque).

I was planning to increase the dose to 500mg after a couple of days, but decided to stay at 250 for a bit longer to give my body time to adjust.

500mg in the morning before eating anything and another 500mg later in the day. It does take your stomach a while to get used to it, some people more than others.

exactly what i do,,,, and starting low then increasing helped ALOT

What difference do you guys that use metformin for far loss notice vs just refular dieting with calorie restriction??

This afternoon I noticed that certain foods taste completely different. This was after only 1 dose of 250mg of metformin the previous day.

The food I was eating is something I eat every day, and it was like the taste was "muted". Has anyone experienced a change in how certain foods taste?

i concur. I added metformin 500 twice/day during my bulk to battle increasing BS levels from MK677. It has made it harder to get in the proper amount of food. And things I used to love eating I now am just kinda "Mehh" about. It's weird.

But i can see how this would be a benefit during a cut, which I'm doing soon. so there's that :)

If you start to experience G.I discomfort you can reduce the dosage of Met and add in a few grams of Leucine, let the synergy of the two sing. Or you could introduce pre/probiotic type of foods to aid in the compositional microbiota chamges brought on by Metformin.

For a big punch on clearing hepatic triglyceride accumulation (if susceptible to NASH/NAFLD) toss in a PDE5i-- Cialis or Viagra for good measure.

Man, sounds interesting but I have no idea what you mean by the leucine/met synergy or the triglyceride accumulation issue  Gotta do a search I guess :D

For fat loss, I'd work up to 2000mg daily split in smaller doses with meals, if you can tolerate sides.

Gastrointestinal upset diminished significantly after first two days on 250mg ED of Metformin.

I'm going to increase from 250mg/day to 250mg AM + 250mg PM today. Hopefully I can continue to increase the dose by 250mg every few days.

Has anyone experienced any nasty side effects from Metformin?

Sides as far as gastritis, or...?

I personally have never experienced any negative drawbacks from taking Met. It may be relative to that over the years, I haven't beat the $hit out of my microbiota with overuse of antibiotics and garbage foods/drinks.

At the same time, in comparison to a vast majority of non-T2D, I'll only take 500mg bid. On occasion, I'll back It down to 250mg bid for short periods of time without reason.

It's been suggested that the gastritis induced by Met is due to reorganization of one's microbiome diversity, namely the longevity purposed, gut friendly bacteria Akkermansia and Bifidobacteria.

Somewhat related nice little read :)

Sides unrelated to gas, or stomach discomfort. Those to me are minor, and not worth worrying about.

I have heard all sorts of more concerning rumors about Metformin, on bodybuilding forums.

Sides as far as....
  1. being hard on the kidneys
  2. being hard on the pancreas
  3. making people go light-headed and/or hypoglycemic
  4. making muscle building more difficult
  5. making pumps more difficult
  6. lowering IFG-1, etc

I don't know if any these are true, but each of them are concerning.

I haven't personally and I've been a long term user at doses as high as 2500mg from time to time.

Personally, I think all are myths or just people convincing themselves those things are happening to them (especially the pumps and making muscle building more difficult ones). Maybe #3 has happened to people who are very sensitive to low blood sugar but those are all overblown IMO. My IGF is always the same with or without Metformin and my eGFR is over 100 and I've never seen a BUN or creatinine out of range except once after training.

I do, the fat falls off, but it a more a genetic complexity of my body. I clearly have a shuttling problem and whatever is excess get eliminated. Is this a short cut(yes) would it be healthier than a tighter longer diet NO.
