Do any of you bros have hearing aids or need them?

Long story short, I've had worsening hearing for about a year now and have played the stubborn card on getting them checked out. Finally got bad enough that I had no choice but to go to a hearing specialist.

My ears were beyond plugged and one of them has an infection. After the cleaning I could actually freaking hear great, or so I thought. after the cleaning they gave me a hearIng test. Fucking failed badly. Moderate to severe permanent hearing loss in my left ear and my right ear is not much better.

The only real fix? hearing aids. I'm in my mid 30's here, would have never thought hearing aids would even be in the picture. Bad hearing doesn't run in the family or anything. Guess all these years of playing in the dirt, playing with big motored toys, around construction dirt/dust along with loud heavy machinery without ear protection has caught up with me.

Anyhow, they prescribed me zpack antibiotic for the infection and I go back next week for the hearing aid consult. Fricking yay for me.

So my question to you bros, anyone out there had them at a youngish age? Are they a pain in the ass as far as discomfort or do you get used to them? Has anyone had bad hearing and was able to correct it without hearing aids?

So you think your hearing loss was due to working around heavy machinery? Did you ever listen to loud music or go to a lot of concerts? Im 48 years old now and it is catching up to me. Mine is mostly due to loud music. I have tinnitus mostly in my left ear now. I should get mine tested, but I am still getting by. I don't want to mess with it either. I hope someone on here can lend you some advice. I will be watching because I want to know too.

Thanks maldorf. I do believe a lot of it is from contruction. Jack hammers, nail guns firing in my ear all day, and yes loud machinery I am always around. Hate wearing ear plugs, wish I would have.

And yes, in my younger days I always had a loud ass sound system in my truck, so I'm sure that didn't help one bit like you mentioned.

Strange thing is, after they did a good cleaning its now like I can hear as good as ever. I can hesr background noise, conversations going on in the next room and my wife when she's talking. She always thought I had selective hearing and it was me just tuning her out. Atleast I proved that to be false lol.

But even though I think I can hear great now, the heearing test proved that there is permanent damage and that I'm in desperate need of hearing aids to have a permanent fix.

I'm 48 and have been using Hearing Aids for about 4 years.
I've had hearing problems my whole life and had a few corrective surgeries as a child.

I've gotten used to them and can't live without them now. Like wearing a watch. I feel naked without them.

My ENT doc recommended them years ago and I waited a few more years before giving in and getting them. The audiologist at my ENT's office tried to sell me some that were $8,000 (they get a commission). That's more than I was willing to spend on them.

Costco has a really good hearing aid department. The audiologist there was awesome and discussed all of the available options with me. I got them there for around $3,000. The continued service includes adjustments, hearing tests, etc...

They help tremendously but I do still have problems hearing in certain settings. If I'm in a loud restaurant it's hard to have a conversation. All of the noises are amplified. Situations with loud background noise.

Hearing aid technology is advancing rapidly and they now have noise cancelling and Bluetooth options. I'll probably buy some new ones in the next couple of years.

Also,
I can't wear them while working out or while sweating moderately. I had to have them repaired twice (under warranty) because of this.

I feel your pain. Some nasty ear infections as a kid wiped out a good chunk of my hearing in my left ear so I've struggled with hearing issues as long as I can remember if someone is far away from me or on my left side.

I know a few people who have recently gotten hearing aids (one of them being in his late 20') and they're barely noticeable unless you're really looking for them and seem to have improved both of their quality of lives in the sense of not constantly having to ask people to repeat themselves.

Good luck to you man, I know it seems a bit ridiculous to deal with something like hearing loss and hearing aids at this age, but it is what it is. Take care of yourself and just focus on that!

Thanks for posting this....reminded me I absolutely have to go see an ear doc. I seriously can barely make out what they are saying on a TV show or movie anymore, but keep thinking everything is fine.

Bud, I sure do appreciate you telling your story.and thank you for giving me the heads up about costco. I have a feeling the specialist I'm going through is going to charge as high as possible. And I will be paying for these out of my own pocket so I'm sure they are drooling at the mouth hoping to get as much as they can. Paying for them myself, I'm hoping to use that to my advantage as a "give them to me right now for this price and I will cash you out right now" type of situation. I will definitely check out costco as they sound like a way better deal. Thanks again, good to hear solid info from someone who has had to go this route.

Thanks zach. Always great to hear you view. Always so much thought and value in your posts. I really appreciate your input here.

My recommendation to you is do not wait another minute like I did. Had I gone earlier it would have saved me some problems and I possibly could have had corrective alternatives to the hearing aids. You very well could have an infection like I do and not know it. Which makes everything worse. Go get it checked out bro, before its too late.

Did you ever have ringing in your ears? My left ear is buzzing 24/7.

Yeah, just be like me and crank up the volume! Ive got a hefty sound system hooked up to my tv home theater. The rest of the family is always calling me deaf but I cant hear them!

The Hearing Aids have allowed me to turn down the surround sound volume 25-30% lower than before I had them. My neighbors are very happy about that. I live in a condo.

Yes sir. Constant ringing in both ears, which was greatly reduced after the cleaning. But in my left ear it is still there. I'm hoping it goes away after the round of antibiotics.

Ok, maybe I do need to get looked at then. How did they diagnose you as having an infection in your ears? You didn't have any symptoms is sounds like? No fever, pain, etc?

So would I make an appointment with an ears/nose/throat specialist? My ringing seems to get worse with each new concert I go to!

I had no discomfort as far as pain, throbbing etc. The diagnosed it by looking in my ear with whatever magnifying glass gadget they have that they stick in your ear to inspect with. Its was just a quick visual look in there and they could tell it was irritated and infected.

Please do go get checked out maldorf. Sounds like you definitely have a similar situation to what I had going on.

And yes, my wife just googled local ear/nose/throat specialists in our area and called the office that had the best reviews.

Doesn't really help....I can hear the movies/TV just fine overall (of course the people around me probably think I have it up too loud)....but I can't pick out the dialogue, especially with background noise occurring. Frustrating....like listening to someone speaking a language you have been learning...can pick out words here and there but not the whole sentence so I am left trying to get a jist of what was just said.

Triple OT - thanks for the advice...will heed it. Had this happen before when I was younger and just had a blockage in my ears, but a couple of home cleaning kits have not fixed it. Of course, my general practitioner's office cleaned it the first time.

I’m almost totally deaf in my right ear.. finally got hearing aids from the va. It’s a little wired at first.. having sound I. That ear made me dizzy for the first few days

Your story inspired me to make an appointment with an ENT. I have already seen him about 10 years ago for a deviated septum, so I will go back and see him early in November. I hope he can clean mine out and get some hearing back like yours. The tinnitus seems worse than ever now and mostly in my left ear. I will be really thankful if he can make that at least a bit better.

If I end up getting hearing aids, I hope insurance pays for that. Does anyone know if most plans pay for that? Im curious. We have already maxed out my out of pocket max this year so anything that happens between now and New Year's eve is "on the house".

Just checked and our insurance covers it for $1500 an ear over 3 years. Hopefully $3000 for hearing aids is enough.

Good to hear that buddy. Keep us posted please. Yes almost all insirance companies will pay the majority if not all of the cost for hearing aids, from what I understand.

Its in their best interest to have their customers hearing well, as to avoid other serious problems, like accidents, that they would have to cover the bill for if there was to be an accident.

Next Wednesday I go in for the hearind aid consultation. I will let you know what kind of price we are looking at.

I work around heavy machinery and go to concerts all the time myself and don’t wear protection and I find myself saying “What” all the time now.
