My shoulder mess (opinions?)

I honestly would not get A THING done until you are really climbing up those pain numbers (you said you're at a 3 maybe....no reason to do a thing)

I had a 360 degree labrum tear when i was 21 playing football. It dislocated when it happened and my arm went completely numb. Popped back into place and partially tore the rotator cuff. I had no idea it was this bad at the time and put a sling on my arm and continued to play college football. Post season they did the MRI and were shocked. I ended up having reconstructive surgery on that shoulder (they also reattched the bicep). From then on its been pain mitigation.

I also have lot about 80% of my external rotation like you have. No more back squatting as I cant reach the bar.
If you are looking for a good piece of equipment, check out Dave Draper's Top Squat. Dr. Scott is the one to turned me onto it.

About 5 years post surgery, my shoulder was bothering me and i went it to have it checked again. Sever arthritis as well as tons of bone spurs. The surgeon told me that even if she went in and cleaned it out, there was no guarantee i would have better ROM. She said to basically keep pushing (being careful of course) until pain is at a maximum. She DID offer those cortisol shots but fuck that.
And she said the same thing to me about full shoulder replacement. She said that by 40 i would need one.

Honestly, u HAVE to train around it. ESPECIALLY if u are a 3...i would probably have some different advice for you if you were at a 9 right now.
Personally, I think I am going to take my chances with mine being repaired with one of the better Orthopedics in the country down in Atlanta.

100% for sure the number 1 step is to actually see a real Physical Therapist, all the other treatment options are quasi-pseudoscience. There is a good chance the pain you are feeling isn't even from the labrum. It is highly likely you have mechanical/neurological issues with how the shoulder is functioning.

Surgeons only know how to help you through surgery, physical therapists are doctors that know how to help you without surgery. Chiropractors and various message specialists are operating a much lower level of knowledge and ability.

I have torn labrums on both shoulders, neither of these is causing me my shoulder issues.

Knight, do you need a full replacement right now?

Honestly, I WILL get one eventually. I just know that once i get it, the heavy pushing is done. Itll be very limited upper body stuff from then on. I know a couple dudes who have had one and its basically donezo lifting life after that—YES, new advances can make it work and are better than previous years. But its still not the same.

there have been a couple threads in the past 5 or so years that talk about the realities of joint replacement. I remember a dude on here who did what i thnk was called "reverse shoulder replacement" (??). I also remember my doctor discussing this.

I was not talking about a replacement...just surgery to repair the torn labrum. Not sure what he can do in there about 40% torn supra and bicep tendonitis & tendonosis.

My cortisone shots take a few weeks to kick in.
Oh really? I thought it was be faster than that. When my mom had it done for her trigger finger, she said it was instant relief overnight basically. I hope you are right and it does kick in later on. Right now though I still feel the same.

I have tried that Top Squat bar before... I can't get comfortable with it. It is just too ackward. However, my legs have always been my best bodypart and I can still keep them big and full just from leg presses and high rep front squats as well. But it is training other things like chest for example. I can't do regular dumbbell presses, but I can do the presses where you keep the 'bells touching at all times and elbows to your sides as you lower and raise them. I can only do partial flyes, laying on the floor and partial flat presses that way too. (Upper portion of movement, no ROM for the lower half) Sometimes when doing curls or pressdowns, I feel a tight "pull" in my front delt area on the injured arm.

Ahh yeah, honestly, youll be fine.
I truly understand that I was a freak occurrence.
ON MY COLLEGE TEAM, i knew like 5 other guys who either tore or had torn their labrum. All had surgery and were basically 100% back to normal within the year. Like 90% of labrum surgeries are easy peasy. After I tore mine, i refused to go to the team Dr and instead went back home to a well known orthopedic surgeon who used to be a team Dr for the Anaheim Ducks. Just didn't go well. From then on, i lost most of my overhead mobility. Years of PT and all that could not fix it. I know of 2 other guys who have had similar shoulders....1 being a former college RB i met. Forced him to basically retire by his junior year of football. And then Dave Tate. If you listen to any of his stories, his shoulders are toast. Labrum, rotator, loss of mobility. its a bitch.

Not to completely go off on a rant on this, but this 1 shitty surgery and losing my external rotation forever fucked my BB lol
I have a very difficult time externally rotating, so when i hit a front lat spread, i have a hard time pushing my elbows out and hands back....it means i have a bitch of a time flaring my left lat. And its 100% noticeable in poses. Huge right lat, smaller tucked back left lat.

Whats going to happen, which happened to me, is that you'll get some weird muscular imbalances. Pressing for years, one side will favor your front delt, the other side will be much more pec recruitment. Obviously the larger I get, and the leaner I get, I notice it more. You just gotta find what works for you, what is PAINLESS, and what feels good. Then keep doing that as long as possible.

Yes, same thing here.

Yes I just got a second round of PRP in my left AC joint, and also in my knee for osteoarthritis. It sometimes isn’t a cure-all but helped me avoid shoulder surgery and keeps me lifting..might be beneficial to try if they have an ultrasound and can inject PRP into the joint

Have you tried these, Canuck? I’ve researched them for possible administration in my own arthritic shoulders, but so far the things I’ve read and doctors I’ve spoken to say PRP works far better for soft tissue problems than simple arthritis.

I'm glad to hear it's worked for you, Canuck!

Hello guys, I haven't been around very much lately but wanted to get opinions on my shoulder mess. Let me give you the info :

2013 I tore my labrum. Pain was in the rear - teres minor (etc) saw a chiro/ART specialist once a week for 12 weeks and had accupunture weekly for 12 weeks. Was pain free for about 10 months and then the pain came back, but in the front area now. (in the area where your chest/delt/armpit sort of come together.) Went in late 2014 and had an MRI and was told it was a labrum tear. Doctor wanted to operate but it would have required TWO surgeries. One to move the bicep and repair the labrum, the second one about 8 months later to move and reattach the bicep back to it's original position. I balked at having to do TWO plus my insurance wasn't that great and I couldn't afford it at the time.

Fast forward to now. 8 years later. Starting about 2017 the pain reached a reduced point to where it didn't bother me much anymore. Except if I slept on it too long at night. In the beginning it was a crisp sharp pain. A "8" on a level of 10. Today it is like a 2 all day - barely noticeable - and maybe a 3 on some nights when I sleep too long on that side. I do not use anything like NSAIDS or whatever for pain management.

But it seemed as the pain lessened, so did my range of motion. I do not have the range of motion I used to. I can't squat either barbell or smith machine because I can not rotate my hand backwards enough to hold the bar in place. I have made adjustments over the years to the point that I can still get great workouts using substitute exercises. I can do Hammer Strength Inclines, but not barbell inclines. No more flyes, etc.. I do not directly train shoulders anymore.

So that brings us to today. This morning I went to the doctor with fresh MRIs and Xrays. The sports doctor basically informed me that the operation the first doctor suggested back in 2014 was useless at this point. Or any operation for that matter. I have way too much arthritis in the area for any kind of surgery except a complete shoulder replacement to be effective. Obviously, not what I wanted to hear. However, he did tell me that we would try a cortisone shot in the shoulder and twice weekly rehab for a couple of months to see if the range of motion would come back some.

Has anyone gone through this? (cortisone shot and rehab). I have researched threads on here for labrum tears but didn't really find anything with the option I was given.

I apologize for such a lengthy post but I wanted to put out as much information as I could to give a complete picture.

Thank you iron brothers.
I have a slap tear in my labrum and rotator ....Bp and tb500 combo worked wonders that I wouldnt belive it unless I felt it myself ...Its truly a miracle ...

I had one done in 2014 with two scopes, he went in and removed all the barnacles (arthritis), shaved off where I had some impingement. And microfracture. Never got the same range of motion back but shoulder is solid with no pain. I adjusted my training and do a lot more warming up the cuff and chest/shoulders before pushing. Back to full capacity a little short on external rotation.
