Quick heart attack story, I am a survivor

I will keep it short since this was more of a freak thing and likely will not apply to any of you. I am early 50's and have been a TRT guy only (ventured to the dark side once for 10 weeks with primo and it wrecked my estrogen/hdl). TRT only guy for close to a decade. I take LISINOPRIL for high bp and have been on that over 5 years. The other night I had a SEVERE reaction to lisinopril and it resulted in an extreme case of angeoidema. My lips looked like they were going to explode. Little did I know this is common with lisinopril and it can happen immediately or after years of use. Google search it and you will see the class action lawsuit and the crazy pics associated with lisinopril induced angeoidema. Mine was just as bad as the worst pics you will see.

I went to the ER and they gave me a shot of epinephrine along with an anti-histamine IV cocktail. Somehow all the drugs got released into my system at once and caused me to have a heart attack. I went in as an allergy patient and quickly got "promoted" to cardiac patient. The heart attack was immediate and unmistakable. I knew I was having a heart attack, there was no doubt. The blood marker to assess heart attack called troponin was at 1800 and rising when they stopped testing for it. The good news is, I ended up having an angiogram done which showed no blockages or even plaque. And no damage! So that is reassuring for a guy with a coronary calcium score of 140ish. And considering I have been on TRT for almost a decade, it has not negatively impacted my blood vessels. They classified it as a "drug induced coronary vasospasm". It is identical to what would happen to someone who OD's on cocaine. They told me to not change my lifestyle, keep lifting, keep using the TRT, and to carry on with no modifications other than dumping lisinopril and switching to metoprolol. I am bitter that they almost killed me, but grateful to be alive. And as a bonus it is good to know the ticker is in tip top condition.

Okay, so your troponin did not get elevated because of the drugs they gave you. Your trop was already elevated unless it was epi shot which is very short acting and I highly doubt it

I know exactly what they gave you. I have given them 100000 times and none of my patients had a high trop unless they came in with one.

What was your troponin ? We don’t do angiograms unless your trop is very high. if it’s slightly high; you get a stress test and an echo

Why would you do that for something that helps 99% of the patients? The drugs used in situations like this are life savers in most cases. The application was good but now for some reason people expect perfection. Doesn't work like that, never has. Some people have adverse reactions. Look at Penicillin. Many years ago the old statistic was that it killed 20k people a year (US stat I believe) but saved billions world wide. That number dropped once other antibiotics became available.

Anyway, to the OP, I'm glad you're doing good and came through everything with flying colors!

My troponin was at 1800 and rising when they scheduled the angiogram. The angiogram came back with zero damage, zero blockages and no plaque! They called my episode a "drug induced coronary vasospasm."

BTW my cardiologist said he would have never given me epi to treat the allergic reaction i was having. Then, I was referred to an allergist doctor and he told me that epi does not work on allergic reactions to lisinopril. Essentially, if it occurs again (which it could even though I am off lisinopril), I need to go the ER to have them monitor my airway and I essentially need to ride it out.

When I was having the heart attack, it was unmistakable. Searing chest pain, heart beating like a drum, totally erratic heart beat, shortness of breath, tunnel vision....like the world was closing in on me. Nausea and the feeling of about to shit my pants at the same time. Could not manipulate my fingers, hands immediately turned gray.

This was not a gradual thing. I went from 100% normal, to all the above I described in a nano-second. I literally felt the medication move up my arm from the IV. When it hit my heart, shit hit the fan fast. But it was over fast too. As a matter of fact, I felt great after...like it never happened. This happened on Monday. On Tuesday I had my angiogram. On Wednesday I was back in the gym on the stairmaster. I cannot lift due to the injection site of the angiogram (they go in through an artery) because they are worried the internal pressure might open up the wound. But, heart wise, they told me to keep on doing exactly what I have been doing. Apparently my heart is very strong and the ejaction fraction was 72. Perhaps that is why I survived the episode.

If it means anything...the cardiologist knows I am on TRT. He told me to not change a thing...heart is strong and free of plaque. So that is comforting to know. Immediately I had friends trying to blame my situation on TRT. Well, they were totally wrong. It was a drug overdose essentially.

YES. They know these reactions to lisinopril are not uncommon. As a matter of fact, there is a class action lawsuit pending. Just google search lisinopril and angeoidema and look at the pics. I was just as bad as the worst pics you will see there. They cannot explain how/why it might impact you even after years of use. The crazy thing is, he said I can still have ongoing episodes even months after discontinuing.

200 mg per week. 100 on Mon and Fri. I am in SoCal near Newport Beach so I am fortunate to have access to some really good doctors. I saw 2 diff cardiologists separately, and both told me to continue doing exactly what I am doing because I had zero plaque and my heart was very strong (72 ejection fraction). I have been on this dose for 8 years. 53 years old now. The heart is not the concern. The concern is what medication triggered such a dramatic (heart attack) reaction. The allergist is trying to solve that mystery now.

200mg is not TRT, 50mg to 70mg per week is more likely should be the TRT dose.

Did your cardiologist ask for your free and total test levels, 12 hour after you did injected the 100mg?
