My buddy is a sheriff and is getting his gyno surgery covered b/c its painful and effects when he wares his vest,etc... but with insurance they have a dr. do it with an incesion under the nipple and it leaves a scar. He wants to know if he's better off going to a plastic surgeon and just paying for it, if it really makes a big diff or not for the scar visibility?

the scar visibiltiy makes a big differance but thats my opinion my buddy got his done from puberty gyno and it does not look so hot

im no expert but have always heard horror stories of regular docs butchering you...my two cents

Someone that specializes in this procedure is going to do a much better job then someone who may only do a few their entire career.

Tell him to have his PC refer him to a specialist for his procedure. That's usually all it takes for insurance to pay for it.

I am not familiar with usa,but i am asuming being a sheriff his medical would be covered thru his job.I would be animate about using a plastic surgeon.

Ive had the surgery done, and its best to go see a plastic surgeon in my opinion. I have no scar visible either. You have to pretty much keep staring at it to even see a slight scar. The doc made a small incision right underneath the nipple line. And it can be covered under insurance. It falls under the breast cancer act of 1998. Mine was covered 100%

I've heard that this is all nice and well in theory but insurance companies do all they can do find a work around. A well known DR on rxmuscle said he has only had one case EVER get covered by insurance (dr rick something - I forget)

I would kill to get mine out but my life just doesnt allow it now.

hmmmmm well i'll tell him to see if his reg dr can refer him to a specialist and see if insurance covers it. Prob slim odds since insurance companies are such scum.

I've had 2 buddies get it done threw canada medical, they basicly got butchered, and the one guys nipples are still permanently puffy like they didnt get it all or something. I ve been caring around some chunks in each tit for years. Always use nova during and after cycle, keeps them from getting puffy or any bigger. Its time for me in this next year now that i stay alot leaner, to get em cut out and am TOTALLY gonna buck up for a plastic dude.

Italian is correct, it can fall under the cancer act he stated, and also the doctor HAS to use the correct ICD-9 codes when submitting it to the insurance. They have to write the ICD-9 code for PAIN!!! If they do not include that, then chances are slim imo. I had mine covered 70%, because my surgeon, and his head nurse used the correct ICD-9 codes, and didn't mind doing the work. Some doctors and their referral clerks get lazy, and/or just do not want to work with you and the insurance for coverage. I wouldn't be surprised if Rick didn't put much effort into filing the correct codes, etc. I know multiple people that have had it covered....AT least some portion of it.

That being said, it may be a lot harder these days considering we are/were in a remission....or so they said.

And be sure to get a CHEST compression vest. It helps a lot with the swelling. The more lipo done, the more bruising and swelling too....well, usually.

To answer the OP, GO to a PLASTIC SURGEON!!!

Whether you do or not, always request to see the surgeon's (plastic or not) work/photos if he has any. Some doctors will butcher your ass since they are just doing it for medical purposes and not so much with cosmetics in mind.....hence the reason to use a plastic surgeon;)

You can't say something like that without saying where at least, if not the dr at least state or area so people might be able to ask through PM

His Dr. referred him to a specialist but its not a plastic surgeon. They said a plastic surgeon is considered cosmetic and not covered, but he was referred to a specialist. Think thats good? Whats odd is the specialist didnt have any pics. What kinda dr. doesnt have b/f and after pics. I found that shady.

Just get the phone book out and call plastic surgeons and ask them if they accept your insurance plan/network. If they will file for coverage from the insurance, then make a consultation to go see their work, and then decide from there on the next step. You may have to search around for awhile to find a doctor to work with your insurance. Obviously, some are much better than others to deal with. Blue Cross is usually a good one to accept.

Had mine done by a Genral Surgeon. Did a great job and no visible scar. Made the incision on the edge of the nipple so the scar is not at all visible

Insurance companies cant argue the breast cancer act of 98. I know for a fact BCBS covers it, and all I had was a simple PPOM and mine was covered.

Same with me, you really have to be up close to even notice anything..I was very pleased. My thing is, go with the most qualified or someone who specializes in this procedure. I wouldnt worry about cost so much. I went to 3 doctors before I made a decision. I went with the one I felt most comfortable with.

Same here my insurance covered it and scar is not visible at all

I went and got checked out at a breast cancer center a year ago. My insurance turned out that it would cover the majority of the surgery to remove the glands because of discomfort. Unfortunately they wouldn't be able to do any liposuction, so any fat that wasn't removed during the surgery itself would obviously stay there. I honestly didn't see the point of having that done and then STILL possibly needing liposuction afterwards. I'm still saving up a year later to have a gyno specialist do the real deal. The point of the surgery is to get your chest looking right so you feel more comfortable with your shirt off right? I'd still feel just as uncomfortable if I had some nasty scarring from a regular doc doing the job, just my 2 cents.
