Beta Blockers

My doctor put me on these things saying it would help me calm down, help GAD. Anyone else had any experience with them, because I have to take 3 to feel anything (and that's still not that much)

In psychiatry we'll use a beta blocker to help with anxiety and for some people to help with impulse control. Which one did he put you on and at what dosage??? Also, what did you want to know??? Any specific questions??? One side effect some people complain about is a difficulty maintaining an erection. Anything that drops your bp main effect your wood.

I take Inderal 40, twice daily for GAD, and it works like a charm. Obviously it only helps with the physical symptoms, but that in itself is a big help.

I don't suffer any erection problems, but I do find the fact that it lowers blood pressure beneficial, when pinning copious amounts of AAS.

Levels things out nicely. :)

Have any of you noticed any weight gain while taking beta blockers?

I am prescribed Propranolol for when I have to do public speaking, but haven't needed it yet (next month though).

Previously they gave me xanax for this and I felt I was sluggish and unenthusiastic while speaking - and did nothing to control my heart rate or sweating, which I needed most control over!

I highly highly recommend taking a trial run with it prior to your public speaking engagement. I cannot recommend this strongly enough. Maybe I can just put it in bold... I've done my due diligence :p

Beta Blockers are mostly prescribed for control of hypertension and some heart rhythm anomallies. It's designed to inhibit heart rate increase to help control pressure. It's prescribed as an anti-anxiety drug erroneously. That was not the original intent.
As to weight gain....Occasionally very active people have a difficult time with Beta Blockers because they can't work out at the same level they're accustom to. They suffer from fatigue and mild shortness of breath. It usually takes an average of two weeks for people to adjust to the dosage. Some people never adjust and lower their workload without changes in diet and that causes the weight gain.

Wipes me out, but im on 80 mg/day Coreg CR which is the highest that goes. For me though its a matter of life or death. I firmly believe that I wouldnt be alive today if it were not for my coreg. It can be a life saver and I just have to put up with the sides. I carry quite a lot more bodyfat now than I did at my best.

Currently Im on lisinopril 40mg and hydrocodonethycide 25mg and together have reduced my BP from 140/88 to 120/80... The next step for me would be the beta blockers. My Doc told me that Pres. Regan would use beta blockers before all of his major addresses. I enjoy public speaking and am good at it... I am very curious as to how the beta blockers would work with my body...

How many mg daily do some of you take? How many mg do you take before public speaking or high anxiety engagements? How does it make you feel?

I think dosage depends on the actual beta blocker, but with Propranolol (Inderal), 40mg is plenty for me, and there is no 'feeling' per se.

It's not like a tranquillizer where it makes you feel relaxed, but what it does do, is eradicate the physical symptoms. i.e. Sweating, trembling hands, tightness of chest etc etc.

Just make sure you don't drink grapefruit juice with it. It might be great if you're eating d-bol for breakfast, but with the beta blockers, your blood pressure will plummet.

A BP of 120/80 would not likely necessitate the addition of another agent. I would discuss this with your physician further. Some patients have better control by splitting the dose of lisinopril/hctz and taking it BID (i.e., cut the tabs in half) instead of just once a day. Another option might be a low dose Calcium Channel blocker (e.g., amlodipine). Calcium channel blockers tend to have fewer side effects than most beta-blockers.

Do you know if you are salt sensitive? If you are, then you could probably decrease your diastolic BP by simply reducing your sodium intake. Also, increasing cardio and avoiding stimulants could reduce your diastolic BP. Hopefully by working with your physician, you will be able to find the optimal combination of lifestyle changes and meds necessary to manage your BP.

Gamble-

Nice reply I am going to ask my Dr as well about splitting my linsoprill tabs throughout the day. Currently I take two 20mg right in the morning.

Not a problem. Even though it is dosed at once a day, some individuals tend to have better BP control when splitting the dose. If you end up going that route, let us know how it works out.

if you're going into a situation where you might be nervous, take one it will help. i took propanolol and it helps. i wouldn't take it all the time because then you'll get used to it.

I went to the Dr and changed up the prescription a bit... im now on Atenolol (beta blocker) 50mg/day and lisinopril-HCTZ 20/12.5... If anything I notice more anxiety... My BP is slightly higher than normal since switching. I take the Beta at night before bed and the Lis/HCTZ in the morning.

Is there any difference between betablockers? My Dr. put me on Atenolol, is there another that I should be considering? From what Ive read the betablocker can take 3 weeks to notice any effects... Im just trying to understand the effectiveness beta blockers and aside from lower BP is there anything else I should be monitoring to determine if the Beta is working. I would really like less anxiety.

Beta blockers are good drugs, but one thing to keep in mind and only usually happens at higher dosages is Erectile Dysfunction.I had several pateints awhile back that had been on Beta blockers and developed ED.

Apparently it didn't happen right away so they didn't look to the beta blockers first. They all were using cialis, viagra etc... One told me his new doctor knew right away it was the Beta blocker and switched him, problem solved.I let the other couple gentlemen know about this and they switched and problem solved also.

Just a heads up,NO PUN,lol.:)

Good looking out. I have some cialis on hand to help me with any difficulties.... Always gotta be prepared :D

My Doc put me on Atenolol... Ive noticed hightened anxiety since, and I attribute it to the Atenolol... What do you notice with the Inderal? Did your anxiety gradually go away, or was it more pronounced. Im wondering if I should give the Atenolol more time before I go back and ask the Doc to switch me...
