What makes a Guru?

My buddy hired a trainer and prep guru for his last show. This guy claimed he knew tons of stuff and trained pros all the time. I think I could have done a better job prepping him. This guy charged him and really gave him no more info that someone could find on a site like this. I'm not sure what makes a guru. Say it loud enuff and long enuff I guess it makes it so. I won't hire anyone now that isn't a past competitor with some wins under his belt.

What makes a guru a guru as opposed to a regular Joe that reads alot?

Angelo Dundee never boxed he was just a corner-man, but he trained the best Boxers of all times .

Angelo Dundee (born Angelo Mirena on August 30, 1921) is an American boxing cornerman. He is best known for his work with Muhammad Ali (1960–1981), and has worked with 15 world boxing champions, including Sugar Ray Leonard, José Nápoles, George Foreman, Jimmy Ellis, Carmen Basilio, Luis Rodriguez and Willie Pastrano.

So what your saying is a trainer is someone who never achieved anything in his chosen sport and lives vicariously thru his clients ? How can that be. Who would hire they based on that?

I choose the trainer that HAS at least participated in the sport with some degree of success.
Otherwise, That's like taking piano lessons from someone that doesn't play piano isn't it?

There plenty of trainers that LOOK like they know what they are talking about. How does a guru become a guru if he has never done? Do people just say " go ahead learn about this stuff on my dime?"
I ask because I really don't know the answer to this question.

well did hany rambod become mr. olympia or even a pro bodybuilder, what about chad nicholls, what about chris aceto? NO, but all three of these guys have forgotten more than you or any of your friends will ever learn in a life time about contest prep. :lightbulb:

i personally am FAR MORE comfortable knowing my trainer(s) in the past and present have actually been in the sport and have experience taking the same supps as they might have me take. i want a trainer that KNOWS from experience how the supps and food and cardio make me feel as well as how they work.

the guy that trains Kai Greene looks like he has never worked out, but when I see guys like that and guys like bboy mentioned, I also assume they probably would have been bodybuilders, but for some reason, injuries, genetics, etc., didn't, and of course these are most likely more intelligent guys, and they decided to put their knowledge to use by training others.

If you are actually looking for a guru, you can check out the client list of the trainers on this board. There's a few that I would trust, but I ended up hiring Phil Hernon, and couldn't be happier.

OK, my two cents.

It's similar to coaches in professional sports. A lot of the best coaches were average players at their chosen sport and needed to know the ins and outs of the game just to make it where they did. Often the best athletes don't translate into good coaches because they were gifted or had innate talents they can't understand nor pass onto their players. See Magic Johnson and Wayne Gretzky. Sorry for this tangent, but I think it's relevant. There are exceptions to the rule, especially in bodybuilding where getting far in this sport often takes a full understanding of diet, training, supplements, etc. blended together.

It depends what school or dscipline you speak of. In my hobbies- some people are self proclaimed Guros or Masters and I laugh at that. Some disciplines have an actual criteria that when you reach a certain level your title becomes Guro. Other places the title is given by the mass of members or students of a disicipline. Guro simply means teacher, than you can have Master Teacher and so fourth. Its like Sensei in japanese or Sifu in CHinese etc etc

Well then why would u attack "magnum" just a few hours ago and say that he needed to get off his fat ass and get onstage to prove that he knew what he was talking about when it came to bodybuilding??

Make up your mind dude.

It 90% diet knowledge. It's not only knowing how to get the fat off of someone, but also knowing how to keep the process going by making the correct adjustments once they get down to a certain level. You can start eveyone out on almost the same diet, but after about two weeks they all go a different direction.

I understand that you don't have to be a past champion.

But where does this knowledge base come from.
Dieting to preserve lean mass and shred bodyfat take yrs of trial and error. If at first not on yourself, who then is the lucky chump that gets to be the lab rat?

That's a huge leap. A lot if these self professed gurus are basement dwelling antisocial Internet rats that graduated from cut and pasting porn to training pro bodybuilders. You can be anyone you want to be via the Internet.

I personally prefer to see a trainer either look like a trainer or have a history of competition that his knowledge is based on. Talking the talk us cheap and easy, but walking the walk shut the doubters up

question: what are the odds of someone building a national level calibre physique on grain fed beef and 500 mg of test a week?

What does grain feed beef got to do with anything?

those who can, do...those who can't, teach.

example is other pro sports. How many coaches never played past high school?
but sometimes it is nice to have both

Im pretty sure NFL coaches don't go from flunky high school football player to head coach in the NFL. That's not a good example.

I learned to train from a guru. He was a world champion powerlifter, and held a number of world records at different times in his career. I wanted to be a powerlifter, so I shut my mouth and listened and learned. People like that are pretty rare.
