Raw Butter/Milk - Not 100% Grass fed

I found a local farmer that sells grass fed raw butter for $10 a pound and raw milk for $7 a gallon. When I asked if their cows were 100% grass fed, I got this response back...

"No. Cows are on grass(when we have it), hay and natural dairy ration formulated for Jersey cows."

Is this still a good butter / milk to use or should I keep looking?

That's standard feed. There isn't a good supply of year-round pasture in certain parts of the country so they supplement with hay and the rations. Just be sure they keep the rations ,aka grain, to a bare minimum. If it were myself I'd look for a farm that never uses the rations but instead opts for hay when pasture is unavailable.

Your best bet is to stock up on butter that was made fresh in the summer months.. This will ensure a top quality product.. The cows diet should consist of all lush grasses at this point..

Oh, no! Here we go with the anti-raw milk crusaders.

Funny, I don't remember BoaMan asking if it was safe to drink.

Bro I'm no crusader and did not mean to drag the thread off topic. People should be free to drink what they want. My comment was hardly a rant.

My thought was that here we have someone concerned with the v subtle health consequences of dairies' mixing some hay and rations with grass feeding. Such a health-conscious person ought to make sure they investigate the issue and consult pubmed if they want the views of microbiologists.

Personally, my body can handle a little S. agalactiae and S. uberis in my cheerios!

Thanks, kingpeon.
