How do you guys feel about Planned layoffs to allow for greater recovery when training naturally. Ive been following a routine similar to Dorian yates for 8 weeks now. Im thinking i should probably take a 1 week layoff to enhance recovery but i am continously making progress. would you wait till progress stopped or try to interrupt that with a brief layoff?
 
gains don't disappear from a 1 week layoff. you generally come back stronger after a couple of workouts. excellent way to bust through plateaus.
 
I agree with the value, but my thought is should i wait till i plateau, or try to avoid the plateau altogether?
 
I would read up on periodization. I now follow a 4 week cycle. 1 lite (15-25 reps) 1 heavy (6-8) 1 med (10-15) 1 heavy ( 4-6) and I have been doing great since i started. And Ive been doing a yates style program forever. I think a lot more guys need to study periodization. Its had a bigger affect on me than any single factor.

Great idea IMO. Sometimes after months of training I will take whatever I feel needed as rest (not too much though). In 2-3 weeks I always look bigger,,leaner,,and fuller and I feel fully recovered physically and mentally.
 
I actually take a week off a few times a year and just be a normal guy. Its great for the system as a whole in my opinion. I go eat wings with the fellas, chinese buffets, pizza, beer anything i want. It lets you be a normal person if even just for a little while. KS
 
Powerlifters do a layoff or, as they call it, "deload" fairly often. I do three weeks on, one week deload. This may sound too frequent to many people, but it works out great if you "earn" your deload.

As Tom mentioned, you can come back stronger.
 
I'll take a week off from heavy lifting 6-7 times a year. I'll do moderate cardio during the off week and sometime do light/high-rep 30 minute sessions just to get a pump...usually comeback a bit stronger. Nothing phenomial but I think my week "off" helps.
