“Death face” of bodybuilders in 80s and 90s

Why is this not seen as much anymore with many competitors today ? The scary sunken in almost grim reaper look was so common back in the 80s and 90s . Most notably Dorian Yates..

Now it is common to see faces that look 12 - 15% bf while their bodies are full and shredded to the bone . It looks very strange and out of place , even fitness influencers I see have that look going on

Is it more gh , insulin or simply not suffering enough ?

Lots of competitors definitely still have it, especially in classic.

Couple things to consider for open division however
- many athletes carb up more now as fullness seems to be a bit more important than it used to
- almost no one is restricting sodium and fluids nearly as much as they used to in those days

I always thought it was because competitors now are taking more test and gh , both of which cause more water under the skin

I think the longer diets that many do know allowing a slower lose of BF, less cardio and more calories, sodium that help keep things full may have something to do with it. Full is more in style these days it seems.

Because back in the 80's pros were using a combination of Hot Stuff and Ultimate Orange. Ultimate Orange wasn't for just any pencil neck geek in the gym!!
God I remember those two. I can remember being in high school and drinking Hot Stuff and wondering why I couldn’t sleep! Lol

Because those guys were extremely disciplined. Dorian missed no step and dieted for a long time and got on stage ready to win. I think alot of discipline and hard work now are replaced with shortcuts that I think people think drugs can replace. Very few large pros today are so shredded they look like skeletor. They mostly all looked that way back then. Mackaway, Munzer, gaspari, first guys I really remember seeing shredded glutes.

And then he mentioned he was eating chocolate cake every week on podcasts and it turns out that he's a human being like everyone else.

It's the same with Ronnie and everyone thinking he was a machine who never strayed from his diet. His "diet" included fries and cornbread and other garbage authorized by Chad because he could get away with it.

I think you’re reaching with that a bit;

Dorian came out with that and said exactly what he did and said he would have a cheat MEAL, NOT a CHEAT DAY until about 3-4 weeks out from the Olympia but it was usually on a Saturday night going to a nice dinner and have a good steak and mashed potatoes with gravy or something like that if there was a birthday or anniversary, he wasn’t eating cakes and ice cream and going crazy with cheat days until the show.. It was mostly a pretty damn 80% healthy meal..

Ronnie came out and talked specifically about the fries situation and laughed because everyone thought he was eating French fries getting ready for comp when he would actually cut potatoes and bake them until they were crispy (there’s video of him doing this) and people thought he was eating French fries when it was actually thin cut baked potatoes…

I’m not saying they never strayed and were never human, and plus, when you’re 300lbs of muscle, you can get away with a little here and there, but the reality is that they probably did diet harder than guys today.

I’m no pro or anything close, I’m not even a bodybuilder, but even a blind man can see that guys in the 90’s and early 2000’s were in way better condition than guys today.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a guy today who looks as lean and hard/grainy with that death face, like Dorian in his prime..

Besides the fact that all these pros look great on IG edited pictures a few weeks out then when you see them at the show they look like shit all bloated and blurry or like guys in the 90’s did in their training videos 6 weeks out.

Shit, look at when Brandon Curry won in 2019, his face looked bloated as hell. Even guys like Hadi, who objectively come in significantly more conditioned than a lot of guys we’ve seen in a long time, doesn’t have that death face super lean/grainy look..

I get that Ronnie was a genetic specimen, but bodybuilding kinda went to shit after his reign.. Everyone is just big and bloated with blown out waists..

Hence why it’s a dying category and everyone is far more impressed with Classic, even though some of those guys are borderline Open category buuut at least their conditioning is pretty insane.

Insulin and food abuse. It’s the biggest variable between open and classic guys today. Same for past open guys vs guys today.

Well whatever he did it worked a lot better than what we mostly see on that stage now days. Lol

It's a combination of things but trying to be as big as possible and HGH are top of that list. Guys are much bigger these days. Look at classic physique and they have "death faces" all the time because they are closer to the size of the guys 40+ years ago.

I really love how the classic guys look :), but I don’t think they come near the size of guys competing in the ‘90 and ‘00 era. Perhaps due to the weight cap, but if you look at guys like Ronnie, Gunther, Ruhl, Levrone and even Wolf… the size and conditioning of these guys was insane. As far as the open goes, those guys definitely pack some more mass but I’ve never seen the insane conditioning like back in the days. I can’t even remember when I saw epic striated shoulders or pecs in the open.

That's why I wrote 40+ years as in 1985 and before. Classic guys are nowhere near as big as the 90's and 00's open guys. That was the era of the mass monsters and if anything it went too far so they had to start marking down the bigger guts as many guys would often come in with distended stomachs because they were trying to be as big as humanly possible on stage. Classic guys are very comparable to 80's and 70's etc guys though. In fact they are bigger in some cases because they are generally leaner and come in around the same weight for the most part.

… well of course. Why on earth would classic guys be the size of top open competitors?

Over dieting, excessing diuretic usage, no "cheating", less GH and insulin use, and an obsessive drive to push harder and suffer more than the next guy.
