Iowa State student crushed to death by 315 lbs after barbell slips.

Authorities say a 22-year-old man has died after a barbell slipped from his grasp and crushed his neck at a gym in central Iowa. The accident occurred Monday morning at Elite Edge Transformation Center in Ankeny, about 10 miles north of Des Moines.

A spokesman for the center, Mark Yontz, said Thursday that Kyle Thomson was bench-pressing 315 pounds when the barbell slipped. Ankeny Fire Chief James Clack says the barbell fell on Thomson’s neck.

Clack says a fire ambulance took Thomson to a Des Moines hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Yontz says there were spotters watching Thomson on the bench. Iowa State University spokeswoman Annette Hacker says Thomson was a student there and lived in Pleasant Hill.

This is a really sad story. I have questioned the usefulness of many spotters I have seen in my gym over the years.

spotters have no time to react to a tenth of a second, which is
probably all it took...

ill put money on he was using a thumbless grip.

I've been ding this since the beginning of my lifting career, time to change it up.

The guy I trained with for years uses that "suicide grip"....and to make it worse his hands sweat like crazy..... AND he uses no gloves....

Other than the fact that, for many people, the bench presses (both flat and incline) are the best overall mass-builders in existence!

I wish more gyms had this type of bench. The lever arm pops forward so you don't have to deal with the rotator cuff strain and bar spin from a lift-off. Anthony Clark (the reverse grip presser) designed it.
