I've had Acid Reflux from an early age. It is often stress related, but can be aggravated by eating spicy or acidic foods. Luckily I've found effective ways to treat it, where I may not need medication or to watch food intake for 6-12 months at a time.

Acid Reflux over time causes erosion of the lining of your esophagus. Many times, the erosion has already taken place by the time your discomfort is severe enough to motivate you to fix it. So you have to treat the stomach acid being belched up into your esophagus!

Two medications have worked for me.

Most Effective:
Nexium

Also Effective:
Prilosec (when it was still RX... dunno about OTC)

If you take Nexium for 2-4 weeks, your esophagus may heal, and your pain will subside. I have a flairup once a year or so, treat it, and then I don't require medication the rest of the year.

You do want to get ontop of this! Stomach acid is vicious stuff! It will eventually burn an ulcer in your esophagus, and is extremely painful.

About 10 years ago I was sitting in class with stomach pain so bad that I literally wanted to keel over. I was downing a roll of antacids a day, and still couldn't get it under control. Medication really helped me, and quickly at that.

Oh, in emergency flairups, I found that a heaping table spoon of Baking Soda in a cup w/ 2 inches of warm water would work miracles.

It does work though! After I read this thread last night I actually drank a cap full because I'd been hogging down a bunch of food.

My wife made some fettuccini alfredo and i ate around 3 plates... then i raped a jar of nutella...
I couldn't sleep last night from the damn acid reflux... this is the first time it gets this bad (guess i'm starting to get old )... everytime i swallow i'd wake up in pain!

any remedies for this?

i feel your pain brother i have a hiatal hernia and the acid reflux has been so bad that my back teeth hurt. this shit is no joke when it gets bad enough. if i do have an episode then i take a concoction of Alka-Selsior, about 6 tums and Aciphex, this usually helps a good deal.

Im prescribed Rx antacids and I was able to stop taking them once I started drinking ionized water. Its wipes out the acids in your body. The board members that are living over in Japan can elaborate on the specifics of why better than me.
