Anti Depression Meds?

Ive had some pretty serious depression for most of my life. They started me on celexa and I took it for about 3 weeks. I turned into the devil. I was on paxil for quite a while. It worked wonders for me. It made me a completely different person and also helped with my anger issues. Actually I kept taking it because it did level my temper out. But I gained 90 pounds on it in like 9 months to a year. And decided to stop cold turkey cause I was tired of being extremely overweight and coming off of it I felt worse than death for a month straight. Anti depressants is like throwing dice when it comes to which med will do what to this person. They effect everyone different. But like stated above seeing a psych instead of your general practice doc might help out a little better to pin point exactly what meds are needed. Wish all the best for you man I know this stuff is no fun and hate anyone that has to deal with it.

Never tried it but have heard a lot of good feedback. How do you suggest dosing?

I take 1 pill in the morning with my coffee....my wife and i both notice the difference in mood and just an overall sense of well being.

its cheap and worth a shot...

my first post on here but thought i should add my experiences.
ive been on numerous pills, venlafaxine, sertraline, fluoxitine, citalopram and now on olanzapine and starting it with sertraline (again). i found the best for mood wise was the venlafaxine but i was immensely tired on that one. The olanzapine has caused me to gain alot of fat around my midsection to the point where i am considering just stopping it and going with the new prescription of sertraline.
Also valid points on getting testosterone levels checked as TRT used to be the way of dealing with depression in men and i have spoken to and read of many accounts of TRT being the way to go. I'm getting my bloods checked for that very soon. As men get older ther testosterone levels drop anyway and this could be a factor that helps without the sides you can get from anti dep's.
Sides i have had that you might want to consider are,
weight gain, localized short term numbness/pins and needles, nightmares, night terrors, insomnia, elevated aggression, mania etc i could go on.

i have found while on prohormones and taking natural test boosters (not all work as well as others) my mood in general has been alot better leading to think the TRT route.
I have been like this for many years and one of the best things is good family support which i had for a short term but on the subject of dealing with grief the depression got alot worse when my son died.

so maybe try some of the available test boosters first for the short term and get his test checked and be careful on the anti deps (wish i'd never started some tbh)
hope he feels lifted soon as its a horrible place to be, and is NOT just all in the mind comments of which can make it a whole lot worse.

Yeah, viibryd gave me the shits for a full month. Finally convinced my doc to change it and I'm on pristiq now. It's been much better.

Ya i understand you have to potentially give meds a couple months to see any true benefit or not so rode it out... shits were wicked bad, could never trust a fart and immodium wouldnt even nudge it... it was near daily for a few weeks then was about 2-4 times a week for a few more weeks before it cleared up to maybe once a week or so. I did the starter pack where you start at 10 and ramp up to the 40 after end of month one... by maybe month 3 @the 40, the libido was taking a hit so when tried to drop down to 20 it started recovering but then the anxiety was starting to flair and I was already supplementing with xanax to keep that at bay as well so was time to look elsewhere...

I feel for you. It seems you have to juggle a bunch of scripts to find the sweet spot( a normal life)

Why is your cortisol high? Address that and then your talking about a FIX. All other head pills are a mask, IMO. I believe your cortisol levels are high, why do you always feel a fight or flight? What is your life history? What events might have happened that you never fully addressed that causes this? I don`t want the answer to these questions, those are for you. It not about "thinking it away", its about controlling your thoughts, your perception of things and the meaning you give to them, reprogramming your brain. Positive thinking is bullshit.

Scientology is my guess. Which is great if it works for you.

I've tried every type of antidepressants and the only one that worked for me was cymbalta at 60 mg a day,its a SSNI .
It works on my depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder .
I'm also on klonopin 1mg 3 times a day for anxiety and for sleep
I take trazadone 400mg before bed and seroquil 200mg at bedtime for sleep
Hope this helps

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. You are aware of the symptom of the depression (death of a loved one)so maybe you should look into alternate ways of treating it. When I tried to get off of drugs I was depressed for years until I started seeing some help in the form of counseling. We got to the symptoms of my depression and did alot of cognitive behavioral therapy along with other things. It wasn't a quick fix, but it does work. It's a scary thought that your well being is in the hands of a doctor, who writes your script. What happens when you dont have your meds etc? After a while meds stop working, it's a fact. If you have the resources maybe you could look into alternate treatment methods? Good luck with everything.

Nice to try and take a shot at me retard, but no, not scientolgy, its called, Psychology, the study of human behavior, what makes people tick, why people do certain things. Guess what, you are not unique, neither is your problem! Many others have had the same problem/issue, yet many people react differently, why?

If popping a pill is what you think works for you, great! Get yourself lots of underwear to deal with the shits, viagra to help your dick, your teeth will rot because of dry mouth, etc. All I`m saying it does not fix any underlying issues, only covers them up, usually causing lots of sides. Again the OP was about a person with a traumatic, sudden event. I can`t believe how many of you guys are on pills and reco it for an event like that. He needs to deal with that issue, the sudden passing of his wife. He was not born with some brain chemical deficit.

I have serotonin imbalance and that can not be fixed . Only way to fix it is pills.
14 y ago i thought i was dying as i felt like shit. Started clonopin and felt great. As clonopin is very bad and addictive i switched to paxil. Been on paxil for 13 years at 20mg a day.
Tried to get off and went to see dif dr's and therapies but they all said serotonin and chemical imbalance you cant fix. So i am stuck on pills for life. At least i feel good and AAS like tren . clen etc dont bother me or have any interaction , at least for me..

Before getting on psychotropics, make sure your dad gets his testosterone levels checked as well while he's at the doctor. It is entirely possible that he has low testosterone which is also giving him symptoms of depression.

He is on HRT; Test and GH. That's where we started about 2 years ago. It seemed to help for a while but back down he went.

My point was most directed at the OP and depression in general since I don`t know anything specific about anybody nor do I care. Are you saying TNH was born with depression like a person is born with type 1? Really?

The OP`s mother died, everybody dies but when it is so sudden and expected it can be very hard to deal with. His father is what the thread is about. He became depressed after a specific event... did you read the thread? He needs to address his issues, NOT take pills. I would guess his rules and beliefs of life failed, your not supposed to lose your wife, that way, that sudden.... but it happened. So he should cover everything up with a pill that messes with the chemicals in his brain?... Most likely without any blood work.

My dad gets his blood work done every 3 months. He gets a full panel with all his hormones as well. Everything is perfect.

guys the thing to remember here is that there are many different means to a similar end.

you can use all kinds of substances, or actions to work on chemistry. yes it is a real thing but there is far more to this then simple chemistry.

most people that end up going the chemistry route suffer a bit, i dotn think there is any way aroudn the suffering for some of the time. its necesary, you need to change somethign in your life. that how you ended up where your at. you may not know what it is or how to fix it but somewhere some how there is a fix.

you just have to applie yourself to some really ddifficult shit. it is far easier to play with drugs all day then do all the other hard work. but if you are smart and use both you can overcome pretty much anything.

its unfortunite that we put people in jail that choose to persue there health by non traditional methods though.

i totally disagree with western medical philosophy on these issues. they are very complex and so many variables. the other thing is that you cant learn this shit in a book so most docs are no help, one needs to understand through experiance not the desire to have a well paying stable carreer.

I don't want to get into the debate of "antidepressants...good or bad?". I think your dad should first sit down with a psychologist and begin talking. I think there's a lot of good that can be had by talking about and getting feedback from a professional. The other side of the equation is make sure your father is getting exercise, eating well, and making the most of his time with family and friends.

You really need to research a bit further before making a statement like that. Depression has VERY real physical changes to the brain. My father has severe depression and his brain has changed physically as his depression worsens. His physician said there is actual physical damage to parts of his brain as a result of his severe depression.
Neurotransmitter levels can change, areas of the brain can become more/less active, synapses can malfunction, neurotransmitters can be reabsorbed by a neurotransmitter transporter of a pre-synaptic neuron after it has performed its function (hence SSRI's, reuptake inhibitors), and tons of other physical things can change.
People predisposed to mental issues have different physiology than a person with a healthy brain. To say it is all mental is an insult to anyone suffering from mental illness.

I have severe anxiety, and it drives me nuts when people tell me its all in my head. My body produces excessive amounts of cortisol, which is verified via testing. I am stuck in 'fight or flight' mode, and I can assure you it is not my imagination. I have to take medication to lower my cortisol.
I also have very low levels of GABA and poor GABA-ergic transmission, leaving me with very little disinhibitory neurotransmitters.... not a fun situation. I really wish it was something I could 'think away', but that's just not possible due to my physiology.

You are absolutely 100% correct. Mine was debilitating. When he flight or fight responses trigger in the brain you can not control a chemical that is designed to disconnect, panic, fear, and cause despair. From a physical stand point Mine ws so debilitating that I got 1 hour of sleep a night for 2 weeks. I wish I was exaggerating, but it was pure hell. No sleeping Med could touch it. Physical changes are real. I was sitting on my couch eating pizza when I had my first panic attack, it practically levitated me off the couch as I felt choked and like my heart was being eipped out. Had my pastor pray over me on the phone all the way to hospital BC I was sure I was dying the pain was so bad.
It is physically debilitating as I had no stressors in my job, wife is great, job is great, childhood was good, it just happens. I now look at things differently. I talk to my panic attacks. When i feel them coming on I talk shit to the.

Citalopram/celexa did wonders for me. Took my anxiety away
