Any mechanical engineers?

The other thread got me thinking and I started googling. That didn't produce any results because I'm not even 100% sure what exactly I should be searching for.
Im looking for a component that can apply braking pressure to a cable if the cable experiences sudden acceleration past a certain speed. Preferably something that would allow me to set the desired speed at which the brake applies.
The device should be capable of bringing a weight of 500 lbs to a full stop under these conditions.
Acceleration over 8 inches that matches falling at 9.8 m/s^2

Then, when pressure is released, the brake releases. A. Fully mechanical device ice with no electronic components would be preferable.

Im hoping someone can tell me what search term to use on Google for something like this.

This wouldn't work. A good analogy is an elevator. They may be cable driven but the brake mechanism is on the rail. Cables by nature are not effectively clamped in motion and the motors that drive them do not provide a way to 'fast brake' even in the event that the motor would be destroyed. Point being you need a secondary rail with a spring loaded safety cam (brake) that bites the rail.

Looks like they do actually use rope brakes in lighter elevators. I believe they require power. Google 'rope brake'.

Awesome! This looks perfect!
Im contacting a few manufacturers for recommendations.
Of course this entire exercise is useless because safety bars exist but still, I want to see if i can make an attachment that becomes my spotter.

Best of luck sir. Sounds like a cool project. I used to tinker with things in the engineering lab and while the mechanical side will probably be the easiest part the control systems are the most complicated.

What about a fall arrest system for safety harnesses?? They work off of a centrifugal clutch. You can pull them out and they self retract but under rapid decent like falling the brake stops you.??

We use these all the time.

This is exactly what I was looking into. Theres a similar machine made for very heavy loads. I habe emails out to the manufacturers to get more details.

This might be more what you’re looking for...
