Any Poker Players? Going to Vegas for Mr. O and Need Advice!

I started playing poker online back in October last year when I was off work recovering from a surgery. With no prior experience at all, I have become a fairly decent tournament player in a short amount of time. However, I have never played the game live, only online. I am heading to Vegas in a month for my annual Mr. O trip and am hoping to get some live tournament experience in while I am there. Anybody have any recommendations on places I should play as well as places I should avoid? I am looking for a relatively slow tournament structure that would tend to favor the skilled players. I am going to be staying at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay, and would prefer to not have to go too far out of the way.

I'd recommend just playing at a regular table at first to get the hang of things before jumping right into a tournament. The touneys I've played in have cost anywhere from $60-100 entry fee, and I've seen more expensive ones.

Hey bro Ill let you know where I like to go. Ive been playing for the last 10 years and it helped pay my way through college. I have to give you this word of advice and take this for whatever its worth.....there are several poker rooms in Vegas that cater to a certain type of player. Bellagio has every game possible all the way up to 3000-6000 game that you would see all the big names playing at. Jennifer Harmon, Chip Reese, and many other pros play those games on a regular basis there. Don't get over extended and play in a game you are not comfortable at. Being you have never played live before, get some practice at a 2-4 limit/cash game first so you know how to post your blinds and utlize your position ect. Then play a couple of "sit and go's". MGM Grand has these at their card room all the time and how they run these games is like this - everyone buys in for the same amount and then they chop it into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and structure the blinds just like a tourney only its just the table playing and not hundreds or thousands of people. You can build a little bankroll if you win a couple of those and be set for your trip and then play a couple of smaller tourneys . Ill be there this Olympia and Ill be playing a night or two so send me a PM and Ill be glad to show you were the good places are to play. Mandalay has a little card room right by the House of Blues but they have a very small amount of tables. If you want to know more just drop me a line.

The poker room at Mandalay Bay is pretty small but I've always had pretty good success playing there. They have 2/4 No Limit with a $200 min max buy in and 5/10 with a $500 min max buy in. These are the cash games that run all day and night. Your best bet would be to start at the 2/4 table and see how you do.

I'll be staying at The Hotel that weekend so I'm sure I'll see you in the card room.

Awn and JMumf: Do they have SNG's at Mandalay? I am not a big fan of NL cash games. Its just a different style of play and I don't get the rush I get from the tourny's/SNG's where the blinds are increasing and the field is continually narrowing.

Im not sure on that one. The Bellagio will have them though as well as daily tourneys. I think they have one at noon everyday. I do know that the MGM which isnt far will have them.

I originally had a 96 Camaro SS Vert but bought a 2002 35th Anniversary LE Camaro SS Vert in November 2001 and finally sold the 96 Camaro in 2004; couldn't afford to keep both.

My cousin is Karate Mike Santoro from Atlantic City in the World Poker Tournament or some shit. I believe he is ranked somewhere around 15 in the world, but not sure. Cracks me up seeing the little fugger on TV (ESPN).
