Iv had a pilonidal cyst(a large abcess/cyst next to the tailbone) for about 3 years it comes and goes. I tried to pop it about a year ago(some serious pain) and got about 30ml of infection blood and pus. It went away for awhile and now it is flaring back up. To lay down for bench is just about excruciating sometimes.
I have read up on many different treatments, most all of which are surgery with a recovery time of atleast 6 weeks. The recurrence rates are about 15% also from surgery. I dont really wanna spend money, be out for 6 weeks in pain on something for it just to reoccur a year down the road.. Just seeing if any of you guys have had some experience with this. Is the surgery worth it? Or just keep living with it?

I had something similar and it is a true pain. Fortunately mine was in a more accessible place so I was able to drain it myself. It got so bad once I had to go to the ER because of extreme pain and infection. The only true way to get rid of it is surgery but you are right....It is not a guarantee.

I have had them. My doc cut it out right in his office, put a drain in it, and a script for kelfex. He hit it with like 10 shots of novacain first. They suck !!!

It confused my doctor when it first developed...He thought the growth had the possibility of being a tumor.

had one near my tailbone as a little kid 3-5 yrs old.. I guess the Dr. cut it out and so far all is good, since I'm 37yrs old now

Man,

I know how much they hurt. I got them 2 years n a row when I was in my
20's. Same location as you. My Dr did what moremusscle's did, in his office, a little novacane, a drain for a few days, some antibiotics for a week. Pain gone instantly. I was training the very next day.

When it came back the following year, same procedure. Not a problem since then, some 30 years ago.

I don't know if that's any help, but I do know how painful they are.

Peace,

Mack

I had one a few years ago when I was 18. Doctor drained it in his office. Hurt like hell because he packed it with gauze.

I had one that flared up three different times. First two times I was able to go to the doctor and had it drained. Third time I Had surgery. They completely cut out the area and left it open. Healing time sucked and was uncomfortable but haven't had a problem since (knock on wood), been about 5 years.

Ive had mine for 9 years,it gets bigger and smaller.I leave it alone and its annoying but no big deal.

Mine first appeared when I was like 21-22...it got so bad I couldn't sit, walk, or do anything really. I was this close to going to the hospital, but it ended up opening and draining.

It'll flare up a little here or there, with some liquid but nothing unmanageable, and no more pain. I was going to get the surgery, but I was told 6 week recovery, and I'd have to change the dressings twice a day. FUCK THAT!!!

I never got it done, and really haven't had any problems with it since...

My advice: if you got one that's getting painful, put a hot compress on it (I would put a spoon in as hot of water as I could stand, and use that)...it'll bring the pus to the surface and encourage drainage
