Anyone here start CPAP without a sleep study first?

Yeah, I get my bloodwork done pretty regularly. I can just walk in and do it, no long wait times or anything. If you wonder about my bloodwork results then everything's been fine so far, except my FBG is a bit off (90ish), which might just be from poor sleep.


Also, shoutout to the guys who mentioned buying used. I honestly didn't even considered that. I've found a used AirSense S10 for about $250 and an S11 around $350. There are also a few sites selling new ones closer to $550, but it's cryptic what's actually included. Some of the cheaper listings are just the base unit with no tubing or water chamber.


I'll probably go the used route for now since it's way more affordable, and I can always upgrade later if needed after the sleep study.

I don't see anything wrong with buying a used one as long as you replace the hoses, tank, headgear. Those things buying them out of pocket can add up too and u really should change them every 3-4 months. Something to also keep in mind is these machines do go bad. I had some break through snoring with my Air Sense 10 took it into my doctor and something was wrong with the machine. It was going to cost $300 to fix it so my doctor recommended a new one and luckily my insurance covered it.

The test couldn't be easier. No idea if the results are more or less accurate than the 1-2k tests I looked at. It gets you paired with a script and machine and the machine automation does the rest. After only a few weeks i actually already prefer using it to not. Good luck.

Try Lofta for an inexpensive (< $200) basic at home sleep study. They mail the test to you and it is incredibly easy. They will give you a script and you can buy your machine from them or not. I was in a hurry, not concerned about going through insurance and frankly didn't have time for a more conventional approach. I bought my machine through them and the prescribed pressure settings were automatically uploaded into the machine via the app. I am using a Resmed Airsense 11 Autoset with Resmed P10 nose pillows. I tried a nose mask and preferred the pillows. There is an adjustment period but I already actually prefer sleeping with it on.
I offer no expertise with this post, just my recent experience. Also, request a copy of your script so you have it to use as you like.

I think I'm a month into using my CPAP. My nose was unhappy the first week or 2 (I'm using pillows. Get Body Glide cream), there was a multiweek adjustment period during which I was more tired, and the maintenance is inconvenient. However, my events per hour are < 1, I'm now sleeping better and also feeling better. I'm due for bloodwork and hopeful my very high HCT has dropped. I now can't imagine sleeping without it. Btw, I also tape my mouth. Strictly nose breathing at night.
