Weight gain is one of the most common side effects of second generation antipsychotics, along with other metabolic side effects like hyperlipidemia and increased risk for type 2 diabetes. Though, Abilify has shown less weight gain than a lot of the others. But you have to weight the risks vs. benefits because if you need an antipsychotic medication to function productively in your life due to Bipolar or schizophrenia then it may be worth the risks.

I was just started on 2mg for mood stabilization. I got off 300mg of Lithium which I noticed nothing side effect or benefit from.

I have noticed weight gain from Paxil but more so bc it gives me this compulsion to eat carbs at night. Like 3am I zombie walk to the fridge and eat cookies, cake, etc. I barely remember it in the morning. Just started getting it under control lol.

I once was very close to a person that has been badly misdiagnosed.
Definitely she did NOT need this drug and the effects have been absolutely catastrophic. Pretty much CAUSED all it's meant to cure.

Unfortunately, psych is almost trial and error with meds.

Also, misdiagnosis is definitely catastrophic. Hell you assess a truly bi-polar patient in a depressed episode….give them an antidepressant…..they will be thrown into mania and could definitely ruin their life within a week.

And never, ever, never START a new psych med from a general practitioner. Some have a good grasp on psych, many do not.

That happened to me. Was given an anti depressant and nearly hung myself because of that nasty shit. Fucked he up for a long time. Never was completly normal after that shit. Like it permanently fucked up my brain. That shit is not good for everyone

Definitely. My castle in the sky plan is to have a clinic where we assess all of it. Physical….genetic polymorphisms, nutrient status, inflammation, thyroid, endocrine, diet, sleep…..

then assess psychosocial….like me, who the fuck thought benzos would be a good idea during a divorce? lol everyone is anxious and broken during a divorce…..let’s add a drug that can get you higher than a kite!!!

After ALL that…..then we look into meds. Meds can be good. Some brains just don’t make enough serotonin to deal with life today. Evolution is slow. You take someone from 200 years ago, which is a blip on the evolution timeline….put them in a city of 200,000 people. They’d lose their damn mind in a week or less.
