PRELIM FIGHTS
Fight #1:
-Jason Black vs. Matt Grice
Round 1: Grice gets Black down early in round one. Black working for a choke from the bottom. Grice throwing down some elbows as Black manuevers away from the cage. Grice working for an armbar attempt here. Nothing doing. Black is looking to secure a kimura on Grice's left arm. Grice escapes and is landing hard elbows from the top. Grice working in some punches now, landing effective shots. Black working for a kimura on the right arm now, this attempt a little closer than the other - but still nothing doing. The two scramble up to their feet and the crowd is getting into the action. Grice working some knees before the two hit the ground again, Grice on top. Black again working for a kimura, getting close to fully securing it before the horn sounds to end the round.
Round 2: Grice drops Black on his head early in the second and follows in looking to finish. He's unable to, and Black winds up on top and trying a triangle attempt. Grice escapes but Black throws on a kimura. Grice gets out of that but Black remains on top in full mount. He's working ground and pound as the round ends.
Round 3: Grice with a decent shot standing early. Grice looks for a takedown but Black uses his leverage to pull guard and slap on a guillotine choke. Grice escapes and is on top controlling position and working some punches. Not a lot more to that as the round comes to an end.
Matt Grice def. Jason Black via Split Decision (29-28 Grice, 29-28 Black, 29-28 Grice) after 3 Rounds.
UPDATE: The fight was initially ruled a draw to the live crowd but after rechecking, apparently someone screwed up and Grice wins via split decision.
Fight #2:
-Josh Burkman vs. Forrest Petz
Round 1: Burkman with a big takedown early in the first. Burkman gets a few more takedowns during the round and had a good guillotine attempt at one point, but Petz eventually found his way out. Other than that, not much to speak of in the first. 10-9 Burkman.
Round 2: Burkman looking tired here in the second round. I guess the weight-cutting drained his energy. He's trying some takedown attempts but having no luck. The two have some exchanges in a round spent entirely on the feet, with Petz getting the better of most of them. Some good punches and a few knees from Petz. Burkman not doing a whole lot in this round. 10-9 Petz.
Round 3: Petz controlling the early portion of the round with punches on the feet. Burkman lands a huge hook that floors Petz. Burkman goes in for a guillotine but doesn't get it. Petz finishes the round on top inside Burkman's guard landing some shots. Should be Burkman's victory.
Josh Burkman def. Forrest Petz via Split Decision (29-28 Burkman, 29-28 Petz, 29-28 Burkman) after 3 Rounds.
Fight #3:
-Ryan Jensen vs. Demian Maia
Round 1: Maia gets the fight to the ground quickly with a single-leg takedown. The two scramble and Maia takes Jensen's back and gets both hooks in. Jensen is using hand control to avoid the choke but Maia eventually sinks it in tight and gets the tap out for the submission victory.
Demian Maia def. Ryan Jensen via Submission (rear naked choke) at 2:40 of Round 1.
Fight #4:
-Jason MacDonald vs. Yushin Okami
Round 1: Not a lot of action in the early portion of round one here. The two are circling and feeling each other out. Okami getting the better of the striking battle thus far. The two clinch a few times, again not a lot happening. Round 2: Okami looking good early in the first on his feet, out-striking MacDonald. Okami takes MacDonald down and is working solid ground and pound for the remainder of the second frame. MacDonald needs to do something in the third here if he wants to win this fight.
Round 3: MacDonald attempts a takedown, but winds up getting taken down himself. Okami takes MacDonald's back and is looking for the rear naked choke, but MacDonald is defending well. Okami finishes the round settling for some ground and pound action to likely secure a 30-27 score across the board.
Yushin Okami def. Jason MacDonald via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after 3 Rounds.
PPV FIGHTS
Fight #5:
-Kalib Starnes vs. Alan Belcher
Round 1: Belcher lands a solid knee early. Belcher misses with a wild flying knee. The two clinch against the cage. Starnes appears to be cut on the forehead. Starnes with a takedown but Belcher quickly gets back up to his feet. Lull in the action as the two have been clinched for a while, neither doing much of anything. Belcher with a flying knee and a great elbow. Solid leg kick from Belcher. Starnes with a good right hand that finds the mark. Starnes working the jab and lands a solid right behind one of them. Starnes putting combos together now and really starting to turn the head on with his strikes. Starnes starting to look more comfortable now. Huge uppercut from Belcher followed by a knee, both landing flush. Starnes is bleeding pretty bad now above his right eye. Starnes working some punches inside the clinch. Belcher now landing some punches of his own as he gets some distance between the two. Another knee from Belcher. Starnes works for a takedown but Belcher sprawls effectively. Belcher working more knees and kicks now. The two are exchanging back and forth with punches now. Head kick from Belcher partially blocked as the round ends. Great action in round one.
Round 2: Starnes with a nasty cut shown on the big screen to a round of "ooh's" from the crowd. It's quite a deep, wide gash. He's patched up though and they're going to let him continue. The crowd roars as round two begins. Belcher working some good punches early. Two solid rights from Starnes lands as Belcher just smiles at him for his effort. Uppercut and knee from Belcher as Starnes just ducks his head and covers up. Nice body shot from Belcher. Ref stops the action to have the cut checked again. And they stop the fight. It was a disgusting cut, can't blame them. Starnes is throwing a fit at someone saying "they saw my skull, fuck you!"
Alan Belcher def. Kalib Starnes via TKO (cut stoppage) at 1:39 of Round 2.
Fight #6:
-Stephan Bonnar vs. Eric Schafer
Round 1: Not a lot going on. Leg kicks from Schafer and a failed takedown attempt. Bonnar takes Schafer down and is in his guard working some punches from the top. "Let's go Bonnar" chant starts up from the crowd. The two work their way back to the feet and clinch against the cage. Schafer takes Bonnar down but Bonnar wall-walks back up only to be scoop-slammed by Schafer back down to the ground. Schafer looking to take Bonnar's back as Bonnar is using hand control to keep him off, but Schafer gets both hooks in and has full back control now. One minute left in the round. Schafer slaps on a rear naked choke but Bonnar is defending well. Schafer lets it go. Bonnar turns and is now on top of Schafer. Schafer rolling for a kimura on Bonnar's left arm as the horn sounds.
Round 2: The two hit the floor early as Schafer pulls guard. Bonnar on top working some punches. Bonnar's punch count picking up as he's landing some more effective shots now. Bonnar passes to half guard. Short elbows from Bonnar on top. Bonnar with some big punches as the crowd starts to come alive. Bonnar turning it on and Schafer is just covering up with both arms doing nothing. Bonnar is in side mount now. He throws some more solid punches and "Big" John steps in to call the fight.
Stephan Bonnar def. Eric Schafer via TKO (strikes) at 2:47 of Round 2.
Fight #7:
-Jorge Gurgel vs. Alvin Robinson
Round 1: The two come out swinging wildly, lots of energy. The fight quickly hits the ground with Gurgel on top in Robinson's guard. Nice elbow from Gurgel on top. Robinson doing a good job of tieing up Gurgel's hands and preventing him from getting off much offense. The two are scrambling and Gurgel winds up in side control. Gurgel now in north-south position, but quickly moves back to side control. Again, Robinson doing a good job of controlling Gurgel from the bottom to avoid taking any punishment. Gurgel looked to go to full mount and winds up in Robinson's full guard again. Robinson throws his legs up looking for a submission, but Gurgel passes to side control again. Really a position battle so far, not many strikes or submission attempts at all going on here in round one. Round who was heavily behind Gurgel is starting to boo the action. More scrambling with Gurgel ending up in side control again. Gurgel gains full mount but switches to side control before doing anything with the position. 30 seconds left in the round. All Gurgel, but not exciting. Gurgel stands up and hops back down into Gurgel's guard. He passes to full mount but the round ends before he can do anything. 10-9 Gurgel.
Round 2: Gurgel eats a shot from Robinson early in the second. Knee from Robinson, not much on it. Robinson takes Gurgel down, but Gurgel quickly slaps up an armbar. He transitions to an oma plata but Robinson quickly escapes and scrambles to Gurgel's back. He's got an arm of Gurgel, possibly looking for a kimura. He rolls with it and winds up on the bottom as Gurgel escapes and is in Robinson's full guard again. Again, this round is a position war without much real offense going on. Robinson throws his legs up looking for a submission, but instead uses it to transition to top position. He's in Gurgel's guard now. Gurgel throws his legs up now looking for an arm. Robinson with a couple decent punches from inside Gurgel's guard. 90 seconds left in the second. Hammer fists and straight punches from Robinson. Robinson landing some big shots now and seems to have a little cut on his right eye. He's landing more and more of these punches. Robinson passing to full mount, gets the position and lands a few punches but the horn sounded to end the round. 10-9 Robinson. Gurgel got busted up pretty good in that round. This fight should be up for grabs in the third and final round, which is coming up next.
Round 3: Robinson with a quick takedown to open the third round. Robinson working body and head shots, mixing in little elbows here and there. Gurgel throws his legs up looking for an arm but Robinson brushes it off and is working more punches on top. Robinson landing good punches again. More and more of these very effective punches from Robinson as Gurgel's face is getting some more lumps added to it. He seems to be pretty tired too. Crowd is roaring out of nowhere, trying to encourage their hometown boy Gurgel to get back into the fight. Robinson continues his powerful ground and pound on top. Robinson passing the guard and is looking to get Gurgel's back. 30 seconds left and it looks like Robinson is going to get his first UFC victory over the local favorite. Horn sounds and the fight is over. Should be 29-28 for Robinson.
Alvin Robinson def. Jorge Gurgel via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-27) after 3 Rounds.
NOTE: Joe Rogan is interviewing Brock Lesnar. Rogan says Lesnar has signed on with the UFC. He's talking about his amateur wrestling background and ambitions to succeed in the UFC.
Fight #8:
-Tim Sylvia vs. Brandon Vera
Round 1: The two quickly clinch. They're been clinched for a while, with Vera throwing some knees and short elbows. Sylvia warned for holding the cage. Not a lot going on so far in the first round. I don't know why the ref isn't seperating the two yet. 2 minutes left and the entire fight has been clinched against the cage with no real effective strikes being landed by either guy. Sylvia lands some punches as they seperate. Vera with a big overhand punch. Vera working some kicks now. We're back in the clinch with Sylvia throwing some knees, nothing really landing clean. Crowd getting on the two as we're still clinched. Now they seperate and Sylvia lands some decent punches. Good knee to the body by Sylvia. We're clinched again up against the cage. Round ends. Boring fight so far.
Round 2: Vera with a high kick that lands on the big man, followed by a solid right hand. Sylvia clinches and pushes Vera up against the cage. Crowd boo'ing again. Knee to the thigh from Vera. Yes, that's a notable strike at this point. Ref finally seperates them. Elbow from Vera. Sylvia landing some shots, Vera blocking most of them. They clinch and the second they do the crowd boo's loudly. This is an amazingly boring fight so far as we have 2 and half minutes left in the second. "Boring" chant starts up from the crowd. Vera takes Sylvia down and is in side control with two minutes left to do something. Vera working some knees to the body, but other than that the fight is equally boring in this position. One minute remaining. Shoulder shrugs from Vera on top to the face of Sylvia. Sylvia rolls and scrambles to his feet. Vera with a knee to the head of Sylvia. Vera gets a warning as Sylvia had one knee on the ground still, making it an illegal strike. Only a warning though, no point deduction. Sylvia taking some time to recover. Solid body kick from Vera. Vera slips throwing a kick as the horn sounds.
Round 3: The two clinch to open the third round. Right hook from Vera. Leg kick from Sylvia. Big punch from Sylvia in-close as they clinch up again. Little knee to the body from Sylvia in the clinch. Crowd getting on the fighters again, wanting more action. The two seperate and Sylvia lands some punches and elbows. Sylvia turning it on now. Nice right hand from Vera. Vera seems to be having trouble with Sylvia's size and strength. We're clinched against the cage now and the crowd is letting them hear it. Ref breaks the two and calls time to cut some loose tape on the gloves of Brandon Vera. Nice leg kick from Vera. Sylvia landing some elbows. Vera has a cut on his forehead that is spewing blood down into his face. One minute left. Clinched against the fence again. Yawn. Ref breaks the two with 20 seconds left. Sylvia way more aggressive and effective with his striking as the horn sounds. Should be 29-28 for Sylvia. Vera quick to mention to his corner that he broke his hand after the fight.
Tim Sylvia def. Brandon Vera via Unanimous Decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-28) after 3 Rounds.
Fight #9:
-Anderson Silva (c) vs. Rich Franklin (UFC MW Title)
Round 1: Franklin with a decent jab early. Leg kick from Franklin. We've got our first clinch and Franklin is desperately trying to get out of it. Silva presses him against the cage. Franklin takes Silva down from the clinch. Franklin standing looking to pass the legs of Silva. Silva stands up with Franklin still holding onto a leg. Silva breaks free and we're up against the cage in an over-under clich. "Let's go Franklin" chant roaring from the crowd. Silva with some knees to the body. Good right hand lands from Franklin. Body kick from Silva. Franklin lands a left hand. Franklin keeps looking up at the clock or something up high in the arena. Another "let's go Franklin" chant starts up. One minute remaining. Franklin cut above one of his eyes. Silva with some good knees to the body. Franklin with a body kick. Great left hand from Franklin lands. Spinning back fist from Silva misses. Flying knee semi-lands from Silva. Overhand right and a big head kick (partially blocked) lands from Silva. Silva drops Franklin right at the bell with a big right hand. He's wobbly as he goes to his corner.
Round 2: Franklin has a glazed look in his eyes as the second round begins. Leg kick from Franklin. Leg kick from Silva answered by a little punch from Franklin. Silva hurts Franklin with punches and is turning it on with huge knees. One solid knee drops Franklin and the fight is over.
Anderson Silva def. Rich Franklin via TKO (knee) at 1:07 of Round 2 to retain the Middleweight title.
