I was curious as to why he was having a second surgery and it said on CNN that the original valve they put in about 10 years ago wasn't meant to be a permanent solution and was worn out. Im not sure why they didn't use one more robust the first time. Hopefully this one will last him the rest of his life.

This surgery it said was catheter valve replacement, so that sounds like it was done through a catheter inserted into probably the groin. They would not have needed to crack open his chest that way. I think the first time around they did open his chest up. Amazing they can do that through a catheter. That's how I had my ablation done, where they burned the inside of my heart.

It was supposed to be a TAVR but there was a complication so they had to perform open heart. He said this on his Twitter page

Sounds like that might be the case. Sorry that happened to your Grandmother. It is scary how things can go wrong like that. I was worried about the heart surgery I had a couple of months ago. I was lucky though.

I wonder too that since he had a previous valve replacement done, maybe something with the old one interfered with the placement of the new one. Hard to say.

So he did have his chest cracked open again.

TAVR would be revolutionary if the valves lasted longer than 5-10 years. They degrade quickly, which is why it's not commonly used for even lower risk patients. They degrade even faster in active athletes. That's why they are used more commonly in older sedentary people.

lol, yea, granny was 83......but she was still going strong. I would've had no doubts she would have got close to, or up to 100!

They are doing trials with heart valves made of stem cells and the method is with TAVR. THAT is the future of valve replacement IMO.
