BCAA vs Whey protein

Most people can't afford to get all their protein from food. The most common supplement to use is whey(which I have used for many years). I was just curious what other people thought about using BCAA powder instead of whey protein. For the last couple years my body seems to have become intollerant to whey and milk products. After several days of whey use I get incredibly bad gas. When I take it for more than a week it will give me the runs. If I only drink one PWO shake a day I'm fine. But any more then I start to get problems.

Any way, last year I started using BCAA powder exclusively. I realize that BCAA powder is not as complete as whey when comparing essential aminos. However I get none of the problems I get with whey. I've obviously become lactose intollerant. As far as making gains on BCAA only, I'm still not sure how it stacks up against whey. When I used it, I was only maintaining gains I had already made. It worked quite well for that purpose.

My preferred method of consuming BCAA was just to put a teaspoon of it in a water bottle and fill it with water then shake it till the powder disolves completely. It works really well and is crystal clear, however it tastes like crap. But you get used to it. I call it my protein water. From what I've figured one teaspoon of BCAA powder is equivilent to about 20g of whey protein. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Since BCAA is broken down so fast in the body I will sip on it all day long. When I do that and eat atleast 4 meals I get a full feeling all day. Just like I do when Im getting 400g protein a day. It might be from all the water also. This has also been a lot cheaper than whey.

Has anyone else tried BCAA without whey? For bulking or maintaing? What kind of results did you get?

have you tried using a different form of protein powder like gemma or beef or egg?

I have taken whey protein out of all of my clients diets. I decided to cut it after studying it for a while and what I found made perfect sense to the symptoms it gave me.
I would become hypo if I was to drinking whey isolate all by itself. What happens it whey isolate goes through the intestinal walls to fast and you become aminoademic. Your blood amino's are way to high and you cannot process them fast enough. so your body releases insulin to try to make you uptake them faster. Some cannot be fully digested. Some are even converted to amonia. this can even be hard on your kidney's.

Our bodies are meant to digest protein slowly. That goes for most foods. Eating whole food sources are always going to be the best unless we evolve to digest the refined garbage that most people eat today. Many of the refined foods people eat are liked to many forms of diabetes...

If I drink powder I always have whole foods with them and I choose micellar casein or beef protein...

I have tried egg and casein. I really didn't like either of them. I think I'm just going to stick with BCAA for now and see how that goes. I like being able to get all my water in and protein at the same time. I do add a little glutamine to one bottle a day (not much just about 5g). I still drink a whey shake about 3x a week. That don't bother me much as long as it's not all in one day. The funny thing is, in my early twentys I could drink all the whey I wanted (and I did) it didn't bother me at all. I've never heard of gemma though. Is it expensive?

Just tried looking for beef protein powderand didn't have much luck. Beef sounds like a good source of protein to me but I think the choices are a lot more limited. Any one got any favorite brands (no spammers please).

I'd use a broad spectrum Amino Acids product. You'll be getting the BCAAs and the other 5 EAAs plus the remaining 14 aminos. More bang for the buck. I take around thirty tabs of these a day 45 minutes before, during and immediately after training. Never with meals.. I add a few extra goodies to them to make them more effective, (Alpha-ketoglutaric acid, Alpha-ketoisocaproate acid, Leucine, Glutamine, BCAA, Cordyceps-CS-4) I recover much quicker, I don't need to eat as much protein and they help to get a nice pump. They just make everything easier.

I think that eggs One of the best all around sources of protein , easily digested highest efficiency rating , I like true protein's eggwhite powder and it taste great

IMO protein>BCAA: post
but BCAA>protein: during workouts and cardio

well im still take both, whey and bcaa's but ive been deiting since jan 1st planning on a contest. and ive been sipping on bcaa's through out the day all day and ive lost a lot of BF and retained all my muscle mass, im deff a firm beliver in bcaa's now. i went from 255 at 16 percent to now 250 at 7.6 acordeing to my prep guy and my lean mass is at 231. i will deff do the same thing everytime i deit now.

Personally I would think a combo of Essential Aminos and Branch chain aminoes would work best.
60/40 ratio.

this is why i only use team skip blend protein powder from true protein. whey itself digest way to fast.

ive also replaced all BCAA's and EAA's with LBA's {taste soooo much better}

trueprotein has it: **broken link removed**

it doesn't agree with my stomach, but there are others who have no problems with it at all

I'm the same way when using whey protein, so I choose to go with egg, casein, milk protein isolate base protein that are slower digesting and take bcaa's from trueprotein. Definitely can't go wrong with trueprotein's premix formulas or you can make your own custom mix to your liking.

Take a read of the following, you may find it useful...

Your goal with protein is to provide enough to support muscle growth, whilst also trying to keep protein synthesis maximised.

3 whole food meals a day with bcaas in between works nice for me. I space the whole food meals abou 6 hours apart. Example..

1. 10g bcaa
2. whole food
3. 10g bcaa
4. Whole food
5. 10g bcaa
Train
6. 10g bcaa
7. Whole food

You've got some research to do, young grasshopper..

First of all, you should be consuming whole intact proteins--FOOD--every 2-3 hours. Preferably, an optimal combination of low-glycemic carbohydrates and high-quality lean amino acids. Approximately 1 hour after your meal(when MPS[Muscle Protein Synthesis] beings to decline), consume 5 grams of full-spectrum amino acids in conjunction with 2,000-3,000mg of Desiccated Beef Liver extract, 5 grams of BCAA(500:250:250), 2 grams of di and tri-peptides derived from Casein Hydrolysate, and 1-2 grams of Creatine Orotate or Creatine AKG.

If you follow my protocol, expect increases in every department..

That's under-eating, my friend.

i take bcaa during workout mixed w some gatorade(i get really hypo during almost any workout) and when i get home i drink 5 or 6 egg whites since i cant afford protein powder right now, i havent noticed a difference since i stopped taking whey post workout.

i liked dymatizes whey hydrosolates though, i think it was mixed berry flavor but it mixed easily with water and tasted good.
