I'm thinking about making beans my primary source of carbohydrates. They are cheap, low in sugar, high in fiber, have some protein and reasonably low on the GI index and can be prepared in a variety of ways.

Does anyone have any opinions about this from a bodybuilding perspective? They wouldn't be my only source of carbs but I dunno, say 75% of it.

I suppose it would depend on the type of beans you were talking about. But beans are good for you, especially the red ones, like kidney beans or pinto beans!

GAS!!! I love beans and from a nutritional point of view they are amazing. I do use them in my diet from time to time. But too many and I get massive gas to the likes the world has never seen before. You don't want to be following me when that happens. I have had gas to the point where I thought my intestines where going to detonate. I was seriously contemplating the emergency room.

I don't have any tins to hand, but aren't they extremely high in sodium, like a couple of grams per tin...?

Only the canned ones... but once you rince them you get rid of the unwanted sodium. Or even better buy them fresh and cook them.

Beans are great and make for a great protein source if, and only if you combine them with a cereal (rice, oat, whatever...) cause they lack the essential amino acid methionine.

As for the gas, just take some digestive enzymes. :)

beans are wonderful in my opinion. how many other carb sources are going to have the kind of protein beans have? i think 1 serving of black beans has 9 grams of protein. also, people with high fiber diets have been known to have significantly higher BMRs than those with low fiber diets. this next part may be TMI but here I go. I used to get constipated from all the protein in my diet, i started eating beans and the problem went away within a couple days. Gas can be controlled with enzymes, gas-x, or a decent probiotic, but you may not get gas at all from them.

I think the gas mainly comes from the high amounts of fiber. If you are used to fiber gas shouldn't be too much of an issue. I already consume a lot of fiber so I don't forsee it being a huge problem, if anything it will be a short term issue.

Also, I am looking at beans as more of a carbohydrate source rather then a protein source. Yes they do have protein, and it's definately a plus but I would be taking them primary as a carb and eating meat, fish, and eggs along side them.

fletch_belfast, I think you brought up an excellent point with the sodium. If I were to get serious about eating beans I'd probably need to buy dried beans (or fresh) and cook them myself.

Any other concerns related to eating a lot of beans besides gas and sodium? Thanks for the replies.

Get some Beano if youre worried about gas. Personally, i think the protien farts are the worst.

Go somewhere like Whole Foods and get bulk kidneys, lentils, Black uldas, Douchi beans, pinto, black eyed.. etc...

I usually crock pot them with some smoked turkey breasts for half a day. Some mustard or collard greens, A little fat free, low sodium corn bread.... DAMN!!!! thats some good stuff

I wish I could eat beans ,I have tried MANY MANY times ,but they tear my guts out ,I just cant digest them ,I mean they mess me up BAD:(

Beans give me too much gas!

There is a recipe for... hold on.

Yes, I cut and pasted this. Just print it and go to the grocery store already.

Broad Bean Soup recipe for boosting HGH
L-dopa & Human Growth Hormone Soup recipe for boosting HGH
broad bean are also known as:
fava bean, faba bean, horse bean, field bean and tic bean

The Logic:
This Human growth hormone (HGH) and igf-1 boosting Broad Bean L-dopa Soup recipe that could be called Liquid Clenbuterol!

The big difference is this one's delicious, safe and natural...so forget about Ventipulmin or Spiropent (which are dangerous and illegal)...give this natural Beta 2 agonist Broad Bean soup a try and start quickly building muscle, losing fat and feeling younger! Not only is it a beta 2 agonist, this ones naturally safe with the added benefit that it's also a HGH, IGF-1, testosterone and insulin booster to boot. That is because the active ingredient, L-dopa, is a precursor to the powerful HGH booster, Dopamine.

Follow the recipe below exactly!
This is no ordinary Broad Bean soup recipe...this special one includes the pods. This is critical because the study which proved the broad beans contain pharmacologically active L-dopa used a Broad Bean Pod mixture...not just the beans. In fact the pods contain the highest concentration of l-dopa compared to the actual bean. Also make sure that the Broad Beans you select are young, (I recommend You grow your own) ...because the young ones contain the greatest amount of l-dopa. Don't skimp on the cream either...the hormones which we are going to boost will be aided by the animal fat of the cream. (the body manufactures the hormone testosterone from Cholesterol) So on the surface it may look like an ordinary soup recipe...but behind the scenes a bit of clever pharmacology is taking place. So don't change the Recipe!

The Ingredients:

Serves 4
900 g fresh young Broadbeans
1 small Onion, peeled and chopped
4 cloves Garlic, peeled and chopped
100 ml Olive Oil
1 liter water (approx)
100 ml Whipping Cream
1 small bunch of Mint, picked and sliced

The Method:

* Pod the broad beans, keeping their pods. Wash these well then chop them into small pieces.

* Sweat the Chopped onion and garlic in the olive oil for about 2 minutes.

* Add the shells of the beans then sweat for a further 3 minutes until soft.

* Cover with the water then bring to the boil.

* Simmer rapidly for about 5 minutes then add half of the beans

* Boil for a further five minutes then purée and strain through a fine sieve.

* Blanch the remainder of the beans for 1 minutes then add to the puréed soup along with the cream.

* Reboil, add the sliced mint and serve.

Have a serving of the Broad Bean soup just before (about half an hour) training...this will supercharge your bodies release of HGH, IGF-1, testosterone and insulin.

Put the rest in the fridge for 3 more workouts...or even before bed...because during sleep is another time the pituitary gland in the brain releases Human Growth Hormone into the body. (Although it's preferable to take before training...since you will be able to eat after your workout to realize the full value of elevated hormonal levels) As soon as you've finished your training, slam down a whey protein shake and a glass of a creatine drink.

This will optimally take advantage of the high concentrations of the circulating HGH, IGF-1, testosterone and insulin hormones in your bloodstream to maximize your bodybuilding efforts. Do not neglect this...to take advantage of the high levels of HGH, IGF-1, testosterone and insulin, you must eat...and a fast acting highly bioavailable and easily digestible whey protein is the best form of protein to take at this time. Taking creatine at this time also dramatically increases the muscle cells uptake of this potent muscle builder...not to mention creatine can also help boost HGH in its own right.

EXCELLENT post Mach.78. Beans have been my secret weapon for years...only using oats, rice and potatoes as prime sources for carbs gets a little old after a while...

Only the canned ones... but once you rince them you get rid of the unwanted sodium. Or even better buy them fresh and cook them.

Beans are great and make for a great protein source if, and only if you combine them with a cereal (rice, oat, whatever...) cause they lack the essential amino acid methionine.

you can get some that are low sodium.
To cook beans properly you need plenty of salt or they take FOREVER to cook right.
Canned is SO much easier, no need to cook for several hours. Sodium is my friend, without it I would always be seriously dehydrated, I have to take extra intentionally.

Lentils. Sometimes we make a meal out of them with olive oil and a little balsamic. I try to use black beans pretty often with chicken and lime for a little cuban style flavor.

They must be good for you cause in my youger days I heard them repeatedly referred to as "A Magic Fruit".:)

lentils is what automatically came to mind. imo best tasting bean out there.

to get rid of some gas, cook beans with half of a large onion.

also: walmart sells come cheap-ass no sodium refried pinto beans.

beans are an amazing food, they have a buttload of protein and they have an incredibly low glycemic index. combine that with all the fiber they have and you have a great food source

as far as the gas thats usually because the person has virtually no fiber intake - then they eat some fiber-packed beans (which they arent used to) and get gas

getting gas from eating beans is most likely a sign of AWFUL intestinal health - eat beans and fiber everday for a week and you probably wont get gas anymore - assuming you keep a high fiber intake daily
