And also talks about not doing them on here. If anyone is interested they can search this forum. Phil has gone over shoulder training and I can say I've made some improvements as well taking his advice that is found on here for free by the man himself. My shoulders also feel a lot better without presses.

I went to a new physical therapist today that is also a athletic trainer and she told me to not even to military press again. According to her it is a really bad exercise because humans were not "made" to do a exercise in that position. Idk if that is true but I LOVE military press and it is a great mass building exercise for me but I was wondering since I can't do it anymore what do you guys would recommend for me to do?

What are some great mass building exercises for shoulders?

funny, no matter how much weight I put up on mil press or how good my form was I never got SHIT from it. ya it worked my FRONT delts but so does bench and front raises. and mil press totally fucks w my shoulder. it just doesn't FEEL like a natural movement. I think its unnecessary and can cause shoulder problems. I don't do mil press anymore hardly and my shoulders haven't lost any size

Behind the neck lots of reps go right to the ear lobe, I guess im lucky not to have bad shoulders

I found that standing dumbbell presses are very easy on the shoulders, you can't arch your back for leverage like you can when your sitting so you can't do nearly as much weight for my shoulders never hurt after them

front military, rears, and DB presses were always a staple in my delt routine for probably 20 years, then I had too much pain that wouldnt go away, even with cortisone injects and therapy. I then read an article somewhere called "Stop the presses!" that explained it all in detail, like the OPs therapist said, are not a natural movement.

Now all I do is side, rear and froant laterlas, just an extra set or two of each. Same total sets as before, just no presses. My delts haven't lost a bit of size or shape, in fact still improving since I stopped presses. And I'm 46

But I have a bud thats world class in natural RAW bench, uses all the Westside routines, and heavy military presses are always included, and he has no problems.

I use to do behind the neck presses all the time when I was young. I got mostly big traps, instead of wider shoulders and injuries. As far as front Military presses, I only do 3 at the end of my routine. When I started incorporating more lateral movements. like the one John showed on that thread, I got less injuries and better shoulders. Phil also advice this too me also.

I don't understand how overhead press gets such a bad wrap. For example you say your physio says the body isn't designed for that but surely that's the reason we can put our arms above our head??

How can this be worse than the bench press??

There seems to be a lot of exercise specialists who advise kettlebell pressing etc for shoulder health and stability.

Surely look back through history all the guys from the 40/50's who did olympic lifts as part of there routine. I don't recall reading loads of issues regarding there torn and blown out shoulders

i gave up military presses probably 15 years ago and no one ever noticed my shoulders shrinking.

First flat bench and now presses. How will I feed my ego?

I just hope she doesn't take front squat away from me. I don't think anything can replace the effects that front squat has on the quads.

I don't MP because of shoulder and back issues, and my shoulder growth hasn't suffered as a result.

As for front squats and back/shoulder issues, every doctor or trainer I have spoken with has agreed that I can still do front squats, bot not regular squats. Hopefully your situation is the same.

Most people just lack the mobility and muscle activation to do the exercise properly.
People Olympic lift for decades. Both of those lifts are exclusively overhead.

All this talk about shoulders not shrinking when stopping military presses...Well how about having them grow without shoulder presses? Possible without a substantial dosage increase?

If you want a muscle to grow you need to overload it and feed it.

There are many ways to overload a muscle without doing a military press.

I have no idea why, but my shoulders hurt from any kind of seated or machine overhead press. Standing military or push press doesn't hurt at all.

I still do presses and never have had shoulder issue, but had to give up BB bench for injuries. But this work out that shelby posted is legit. I did it yesterday. I did all the swings the way he did it and preexhausted my shoulders allot.

Then I went to DB presses and failed at 90's with 8 reps. Normally I hit the 115 or 120's. So even though i dont currently have shoulder issues but i think doing something like this can prevent an injury, because it forces a better warm up and also forces a lighter load on the overall lift for the presses.

My workout partner was inpain from the rear delt pump went we went to light arnold presses.

couple issues to explain the theory... for one the shoulder ball joint is a shallow socket when compared to the say the hip, so more prone to dislocate with excessive strain from too much weight or strain in general... after a while your rotator will get shot since full extension over head has the joint as close to being out of socket if by change there is any sudden jerking or loss of control...

also I know grip placement and and how low you go can also cause unneeded strain on the rotator cuff as well... you can only burn your rotator like a candle at both hands so many times until your shit out of lucking by how you hold/control dumbbell/barbelll

how many of us actually do what we're told? right or wrong.

I don't do military presses, but here are some thing Physical Therapists have been known to say:

1.) Squatting is bad for your knees. Never go below parallel if you make the mistake of squatting.
2.) Deadlifts should be done with an over/over grip only.
3.) Your body wasn't designed to press things overhead.
4.) The bench press is the worst exercise in the gym. Pushups are much better.
5.) Light is right.
