What's the best place(s) to purchase a stair stepper? I'm open to multiple brands, as long as they're quality. I'm also good with a refurbished unit. I've seen several websites, but most of them look extremely shady.

Do you want a legit stair stepper or a machine that mimics a stair stepper? The latter would be cheaper plus a smaller footprint.

Something comparable to a stair climber is the BowFlex Max Trainer.

I've been using a Life Fitness with Polar pulse monitor interface where you can set a target heart rate and it adjusts tension to keep you in that target zone with hand contacts or hands free with a chest band. I've been using one for years and have grown really used to it. You can get one of those refurb with a 2 or 3 year parts and service warranty from gympros for under $2500.

You own one for home use? What level do you u usually end up at for your targeted heart rate.
I find stair master challenging compared to treadmill but need to use it more ..

I do. I set it to 220 heart rate because I've been using it so long, I hardly ever get far beyond 200bpm. That way, it's really more protective against a heart event. But for years I would stay at 180bpm for 30-45 minutes religiously. I'm more loose with cardio these days because I do so much of it and know my limits so well. Not bragging, just saying. I'm old. LOL
